CHAPTER TWO
I got back to work after leaving Matt's office. I was an asset to him and he knew it. Firing me would be like throwing away all his customers. And there was nothing that he loved more than money.
"What did Matt say?" Carey asked me curiously.
Carey is a twenty two year old college dropout. She worked as an assistant chef and was the closest person I had in my life, since ever.
"His usual" I said nonchalantly
"That guy is so disgusting" she said, glaring at his office door " if I could just claw at his ridiculously fat face"
"He's our boss Carey. Either you put up with it or you get fired, and I can't risk getting fired right now" I picked up a kitchen cloth, and began wiping the counter.
"You are so strong honestly. I don't know how you do it" she gave me an encouraging pat on the back.
"Yeah" I muttered. If only she knew.
Barbara, my fellow waitress sauntered forward, With a tray in her right hand and a towel on her shoulder. "Don't look but table seven has been oogling at you" she said
"Don't they ever" Carey said exasperatedly, rolling her eyes at thesame time.
She bent low and whispered "No this time is different. He's creeping me out"
"How so?" I asked
"He's been sitting there same time as you walked in, and he hasn't ordered anything except for water"
"How is that creepy?" Carey asked
"I don't know but it feels weird to me. " She looked me in the eye " be careful tonight" she warned
She went back into the kitchen and I turned around. Pretending that there was dirt to sweep, but in reality, I was taking a subtle glance at the stranger.
He was a bulky man in his early thirties. He wasn't fat, his size seemed to be made of pure muscles rather than fat. He had tattoos all over his arm and some of the tattoo was peeking out of the collar of his pristine white shirt. He was handsome though, I'd give him that. What was most intriguing about this stranger was the way he carried himself. The way he sat on his chair, like he had control over everything.
He glanced up and our eyes met. I gasped involuntarily at how beautiful his eyes were. They were a striking, like the colour of the sky minutes before the sunset. They were gorgeous. I looked away.
I continued with my sweeping and by the time my shift ended it was already past eleven.
Matt had made me stay till closing hours as punishment.
"Honestly thought he was gonna stay till closing" Barbara said as she sat close to me, tilting her head in the direction of where the stranger was seated.
I looked at the place our mysterious customer had been sitting and he was gone.
"He was kinda hot though" she said with a grin and I only replied with a grunt of approval.
I glanced at Barbara "aren't you going home?"
"I am. I'm just waiting for Carey to wrap up whatever she's doing in there" she pointed her finger in the direction of the bathroom.
"Oh, you're going home together?" I asked, giving her a side glance. She nodded.
I counted the money in the tip jar and smiled when I realized it was bigger than yesterday's tip.
"You're like Matt's good luck charm" she said, bumping me in the shoulder
"If only I could get some of that luck myself" I muttered.
"Don't we all" Barbara chuckled.
Carey came out of the bathroom "finally" Barbara said, jumping off the stool.
"My stomach felt like it was gonna burst. I had to take a dump" she rubbed her stomach dramatically. Barbara and I chuckled.
Carey grabbed her bag and headed for the door "See ya later isla" she yelled over her shoulder.
I waved back at her as Barbara walked ahead of her. I was now alone in the shop.
I finished closing and locked up the shop. I checked the clock and it was eleven fourthy eight. Almost midnight. By the time I'd get to my rundown apartment, it would be well past midnight. I sighed.
I started my slow trek, taking in the night life. There wasn't really much going on, save for the street light and the usual hustling and bustling of cars. People tend to avoid walking on this part of town at night.
Most people were afraid of the night, but I loved it. I thought it was the most beautiful thing that was ever made.
"Damsel in distress" a voice whistled
I didn't turn around but I increased my pace. But not too much, whoever it was I didn't want them to know that I was scared.
"Didn't daddy teach you not to walk alone at night" the voice sounded eerie and I felt my heart beat quicken
"Listen to that sound Howard." There was a pause "it's exhilarating"
I clutched the pepper spray in my back pocket tighter.
I gasped loudly as a man suddenly appeared in front of me.
"Where do you think you're going?" He grinned showing pearly white teeth.
He wore a leather coat and there was something about the way he carried himself. Luke he knew a secret that I didn't.
"What do you want" my voice was steady, opposite how I actually felt.
He licked his lips, revealing a pair of fangs. Wait fangs! Are those real? Are they props?
"What do you think I want?" His tone was enticing, drawing me in like a drug.
"If it's money you want then you've lucked out, cause I don't have any" I brought out my empty pocket to prove my point. They won't be able to tell that I had money under my shoe. Would they?
He held my chin in his grasp. His skin was cold, icy cold. " We want other things" he laughed
