Chapter 1 - The Night of Destiny
The moonlight spilled across the forest like silver fire, painting the trees in pale shadows.
My wolf stirred restlessly beneath my skin, pacing, eager, her instincts sharper tonight than ever before. I knew why. Tonight, the bond would reveal itself.
I had waited for this moment all my life.
Every child of the pack grew up listening to stories of fated mates—the sacred ties woven by the Moon Goddess herself. Bonds that could not be broken. Bonds that promised strength, unity, and love.
And now it was my turn.
The pack gathered in the clearing, the air thick with excitement.
Voices murmured, laughter carried, and beneath it all, the steady hum of expectation pulsed like a drumbeat.
My father stood tall at the head of the gathering, his Alpha presence commanding silence with nothing more than his stance. He smiled at me, pride shining in his eyes.
“You’re ready,” he murmured as I stepped to his side.
“I think so,” I whispered back, though my hands trembled at my sides.
The ceremony was simple but sacred. The pack shifted, wolves bowing their heads to the moon as its light bathed us in blessing. My wolf pressed harder, eager to take over, but I forced myself to remain in human form. Tonight, I needed to see.
And then I felt it.
The bond snapped into place, invisible yet undeniable, a golden thread wrapping around my heart and pulling, pulling toward one figure in the crowd. My breath caught as my gaze followed it, my chest tightening, my wolf howling in recognition.
Damon.
The Beta’s son.
He stood tall, broad-shouldered, his emerald eyes catching the moonlight as they locked on mine. For a heartbeat, the world stilled. The forest faded, the pack vanished, and all that remained was him. My mate.
Joy burst through me so powerfully I thought I might weep. Damon. The boy I had trained beside, laughed with, and competed against. Strong, loyal, steady Damon. The Moon Goddess had chosen him for me.
I stepped forward, my lips parting to speak his name—
—and froze.
Because his face was not filled with joy. Not with relief. Not with wonder.
It was filled with horror.
“No,” he breathed, barely audible, but the word cut deeper than a blade.
I blinked, the golden thread between us trembling violently. My wolf snarled inside me, confused and distressed.
“No?” I echoed, my voice shaking. “Damon, what are you—”
He backed away, eyes flashing with anger now, not disbelief. “This can’t be right. You? My mate?”
Gasps rippled through the crowd. My father’s expression hardened, but he said nothing, waiting.
I took a step toward Damon, desperate to close the distance. “It’s the bond, Damon. You feel it, I know you do—”
“I refuse.” His words boomed like thunder. His wolf rose within him, fighting to reject what the Goddess had decreed. “I reject you, Aria.”
The clearing fell silent. The bond snapped, shattering in my chest like glass. I stumbled back, clutching at the wound inside me, though no blood spilled. The pain was deeper than flesh, sharper than bone. My wolf howled, a sound of pure agony.
Rejection.
I couldn’t breathe. Couldn’t think.
My father’s roar broke the silence, fury shaking the air. “Damon! You dare—”
But I didn’t wait to hear the rest. I ran.
Through the trees, across the fields, my feet pounding the earth as though I could outrun the hollow burning in my chest. My lungs burned, tears blurred my vision, but I didn’t stop until the sounds of the pack faded and only the whisper of the forest remained.
I collapsed against a fallen log, gasping, clutching at the emptiness where the bond had been. My wolf whimpered, pacing, furious and heartbroken all at once. The rejection seared like fire, a wound that would never heal.
I was supposed to be his.
The Moon Goddess herself had chosen us.
And he had thrown me away.
I pressed my forehead to my knees, sobs wracking my body. I wanted to scream, to tear something apart, but I couldn’t move. My world had ended before it had begun.
That was when I felt it.
Another bond.
Faint at first, then stronger, alive, pulsing through the night like a dark flame. My head snapped up, my heart hammering as the thread of it tugged at me, deeper into the forest.
No. That wasn’t possible. Mates were once in a lifetime.
And yet—
A rustle in the shadows. A presence, vast and consuming, watching me. My skin prickled, my wolf lifting her head with a growl.
From the darkness, silver eyes glowed.
Not green like Damon’s. Not kind or familiar. Silver, sharp, dangerous.
The figure stepped closer, the forest itself holding its breath. A man, tall and broad, his presence so commanding it made my father’s Alpha aura feel small. Power rolled off him, thick and suffocating.
“Mine,” he whispered, his voice like smoke and thunder.
The bond between us surged, snapping into place with terrifying force. My wolf howled—not in pain this time, but in fierce, primal recognition.
I stumbled back, shaking my head. “No… no, this can’t…”
His lips curved into a predator’s smile. “Fate has bound us, little wolf. You belong to me now.”
Fear and something far darker coiled inside me, warring for dominance. My wolf strained toward him, desperate to claim what was hers, while my human side screamed in denial.
Two mates.
One who had rejected me.
And one who might destroy me.
I bolted before he could reach me, the sound of his laughter echoing through the trees, chasing me all the way back toward the safety of the pack lands.
But deep inside, I knew there was no safety anymore.
Not from him.
Not from the bond.
Not from myself.
