Alex frowned, his face hardening. He had heard many horrible things during the war and had seen even worse, but this surpassed them all. How could a grandmother do such a thing to her own granddaughter? The thought was sickening. He pressed his boot down on the doctor’s palm. “Yaaah!” the doctor screamed in pain. Alex grabbed him by the collar and dragged him out of the office, hauling him into the corridor. A crowd had already gathered, drawn by the commotion. Nurses, patients, all staring wide-eyed. Among them stood Kate, her face a mask of confusion as she tried to grasp what was happening. Alex forced the doctor to his knees before everyone and spat. “Now, repeat what you just told me,” he demanded, shaking him violently. The doctor hesitated, trembling, lips pressed shut as he saw many eyes on him. Alex’s eyes narrowed. Then…Thud. His boot smashed across the doctor's face. A tooth flew out, clattering on the tiles. Blood spurted from his mouth as he screamed. “Ahhh—I’m dead today!” the doctor wailed. “No, you are not dead,” Alex growled, grabbing him by the hair and jerking his head back. “But you will be if you dare hold anything back. Tell me now what you told me in that office!” The doctor shook, broken, his words spilling out in a cracked voice. “Mrs. Frederick… she..she asked us… to slowly poison Veronica, her granddaughter!” The corridor erupted. “What the f**k!” a man shouted. “What’s happening here?” another gasped, pulling out his phone. A nurse muttered under her breath, “How could a human do this?” Several people began recording, their phones raised, capturing every second. Kate stumbled forward, her face draining of color, then twisting with disbelief. “No,” she said, shaking her head furiously. “No, you are lying! You are obviously lying, just trying to pin this on someone else. My mom could never do that. Never! She might not like you, Alex, but she loves me…and she loves my daughter! She stayed with me all this while!”. Though Mrs. Fredrick was harsh to him, she was the only person that stood with her during the past years. In fact, she had been paying the hospital monthly bill. Alex’s eyes were still fixed coldly on the doctor. “Keep talking.” The doctor coughed blood, voice quivering. “She… she wanted Kate, her daughter, to marry Mason. At all costs. That way she would be pressured, with no choice but to run to him for help. Then…then they would use the opportunity to marry her off.” He trailed off, gasping. Kate’s face crumpled. “No… no, you are making this up!” The doctor suddenly cried out, desperate. “I have proof! Bank transfers…on my phone. Two hundred thousand dollars..from her account. She paid us!”. He didn't want another kick. Before he provided his phone and showed them the evidence. Now, it was clear as day that Mrs. Fredrick truly did such a horrible thing. Alex held the vial of the poison glass in his hand as his knuckles turned white. He was fuming very hard and felt like killing the doctor right there if not for the onlookers. Fighting wars for this nation for years, but his mother in law was busy killing his daughter!!!. The crowd roared. “Jesus Christ!”. “She really did this?”. “Unbelievable…” A nurse covered her mouth, eyes wet, in fact she wanted to cry. “Her own granddaughter…, ” Kate’s hands shook violently as she clutched her chest, tears flooding her eyes. “No… no… no…”. Just then, the sound of heels striking the corridor floor echoed sharply. Knock, knock, knock. Mrs. Frederick had arrived. One of the nurses had informed her when Veronica’s condition turned critical, and she had rushed over, oblivious to the chaos she was walking into. “Oh, Kate!” she exclaimed, rushing forward, face etched with false concern. “What’s wrong with Veronica? Is she okay? Oh no… my precious granddaughter!” Kate didn’t answer. She only stared at her mother in utter disbelief, her body trembling. Alex let out a cold laugh. “You deserve an Oscar award… You shameless witch.” Mrs. Frederick froze, her eyes flicking up, and locking on Alex she recognized him and scoffed “Oh. it's you” Her voice dripped venom. “This useless, deadbeat, poor, lowlife, foolish husband is back! And already causing trouble”. She was already informed about how Alex beat up Mason. Only that. “How dare you lay a hand on Mason? You want to die? Do you even know whose family he belongs to? Mason is a man ten times better than you! You’re nothing. Absolutely nothing. Why didn’t you just die out there in the war?” she screamed. Alex rose to his full height, his glare sharp like he could her into two. “I should have died, huh? That way your plan would’ve worked perfectly.” She frowned in confusion. “Poison my daughter to death…just so you could force Kate into the arms of some wealthy family?” Mrs. Frederick’s face faltered, her composure cracking. His words hit like a whip, and then she saw Alex’s hand raised, holding a glass vial, which she recognized. Her breath caught. She then registered her surroundings, and saw the doctor on his knee, already beaten blue and black, and the director, lying unconsciously on the floor. Everyone eyes on her, muttering and judging her. She knew something was wrong. Mrs. Frederick’s face hardened, but she forced a brittle smile. “What the heck are you even saying?” Alex raised the small glass vial high for all to see, His voice was ice. “You should know better.” Kate suddenly stepped forward, her voice breaking. “Tell me this is a lie. Please, Mom… tell me it’s a lie! That you’re not slowly poisoning my daughter—your own granddaughter—just to force me into Mason’s arms.” Mrs. Frederick scoffed, her chin lifting in practiced arrogance. “What are you even saying? Why should I ever do such a thing? Is this stupid husband of yours filling your head with nonsense again?” The doctor, still bleeding, coughed and croaked from the floor, “You should let it go, Madam. I already confessed.” Her eyes blazed as she turned on him. “Shut your filthy mouth! Whatever is happening here is a big, fat lie.” Alex’s hand rose again, this time holding not only the vial but also the doctor’s phone, its screen glowing. “Really? Because right here is the proof. The poison that almost killed Veronica… and the transfers from your account—two hundred thousand dollars.” For the first time, Mrs. Frederick’s mask slipped completely. Her eyes widened, and a crack of panic flashed across her face. In a desperate lunge, she snatched both the vial and the phone from Alex’s hands. “Now, without evidence, you are going to do nothing!”.
