As Taylor drove away from the gated community, she noticed a car following her. She couldn’t make out the driver, but it was no coincidence that this car had left the Mystic Moon community the exact moment she did. Deep down, she knew it was connected to the chaos at the ball.
She veered off her usual route, taking unnecessary turns and detours. Still, the car stayed with her. It’s official: She was being followed!
When she reached home, she peeked through her kitchen window and spotted the car parked a few meters away from her condo, the driver still inside, staring at her building.
Taylor spent the next hour pacing in her living room, her nerves unraveling with every step. After what felt like an eternity, she texted both Emma and Peter, asking for news and updates, but no one replied. She waited another hour, anxiety clawing at her chest, and even tired FaceTiming Emma. Still, no response.
That was it! Taylor couldn't take it anymore. She sent a message to Emma: If you don’t call me back ASAP I'm driving to your parents’ house to see you face to face.
A few seconds later, Emma's name lit up her screen. Taylor answered immediately.
“What's going on, Emma? Why won't you talk to me? Are you mad at me? Did he hurt you? Did that bastard hurt you?”
"No, no, of course not," Emma said. "It's just that I've been crying."
“Switch to video call, Emma,” Taylor requested.
Taylor’s heart sank when Emma’s face appeared on the screen. Her friend’s eyes were swollen from hours of crying, her skin pale and drained of life, as if the spark that once defined her had been snuffed out.
"I was overwhelmed," Emma said, her voice raw. "I didn’t expect to meet my mate. Him, of all people. I was terrified. Suddenly, everything I ever dreamed of became real. I found my mate. I’m supposed to settle down now, start a family... It’s everything I wanted, but it scared me to death."
She paused, wiping at her damp cheeks.
"But I talked with Derek, with my parents. I’m starting to understand. They all told me it’s normal to fear change... that change can be good, especially when you’re lucky enough to find the one you’re meant to be with."
“What are you telling me, Emma?”
“I'm going to go with him.”
“Go where?”
“To his place… In Idaho”
“Excuse me? You're moving to Idaho? Just like that? You just met him! This is insane, Emma. I know you don't want to do this. Screw traditions. Screw this crazy belief in mates. Just don't do it.”
"I can’t. Please, Taylor, try to understand... This is for everyone’s sake," Emma pleaded.
"When are you leaving? "
“Tomorrow at noon.”
“What!” Taylor shouted.
“He gave me until tomorrow noon to pack and bid goodbye to everyone. Do you want to come and see me before I go?”
“So generous of him,” Taylor mocked. “Of course I'll come. But don't expect me to help you pack,” she added.
“Don't worry about it. Peter's coming by tomorrow to pack my essentials.”
Taylor sighed. “I'm sorry I can't be supportive of this. But I'll be there for you. I'll even come at 8am so we can have breakfast together.”
“You, Taylor Smith, waking up early and showing up at my parents’ house by 8 a.m.? I'd love to see that miracle,” Emma said with a small smile.
While talking with Emma, Taylor noticed that the car that had followed her was still parked nearby, but now, it was empty. She needed to deal with that, too.
“Emma, please think this through. Don't do something that you don't truly want to just to please others. Whether it's for your parents, your community, your beliefs, or any other reason. This is your life we're talking about.”
“I love you, bestie,” Emma siad.
“Love you too. "Sweet dreams and see you tomorrow,” Taylor replied, hanging up.
She let out a sigh as she looked at her phone, then grabbed her taser and keys. She headed downstairs, ready to unleash her wrath on the i***t who thought he could follow her and stalk her so easily.
When she reached the car, the driver was nowhere to be seen. He must be hiding. Taylor grinned, a rush of satisfaction flooding her veins. She knew exactly how to draw him out.
Without hesitation, she pulled out her car keys, and with a slow, deliberate motion, began scraping them across the driver door. The harsh sound of metal on metal rang out. Then, she dragged her keys in tight, controlled swirls along the passenger door frame.
Moments later, a figure emerged from behind the bushes, shouting in fury.
“What the hell do you think you're doing?” the stalker screamed.
Taylor turned slowly, meeting his angry gaze with a cold, composed smile. “Oh, is this your car? Sorry, but it's parked in a handicap spot. I figured I’d give you a little lesson in parking etiquette.”
“There's no handicap parking spot here.”
“Oops, my bad. They must've changed it recently,” Taylor said with a sly smirk . “So, what exactly are you doing in my neighborhood? Don4t even try to feed me some line. I know you followed me from the ball. What do you want? Are you with this maniac Liam?”
“Don't talk about Alpha Liam like that.”
“What do you call a man who supposedly found his soulmate, yet all he's done since then is scream? Not a single smile on his face.”
“Well, he screamed at you. And only you. Not her.”
“Touché.” Taylor conceded. “But that still doesn’t explain why you were following me?”
“Because I asked him to...” a voice behind answered.Taylor whipped around, startled, and saw Liam stepping out from the shadows behind the bushes. She struggled to mask her surprise at finding him here with this man.
“Well, well... Mr. Maniac himself is here. I'm truly honored,” Taylor mocked, placing one hand on her heart, pretending to be deeply moved. “Why'd you send your minion after me? Are you here to teach me a lesson? Because let me warn you, I'm NOT going down without a fight.”
“I'm not here to teach you a lesson, Taylor. I asked him to follow you because I wanted to know where you lived. I want to talk to you.”
“Go ahead… talk,” Taylor shot back instantly, her eyes narrowed.
Liam motioned to the street around them. “Here? In the street? Is this how we do things now? Are we insects?”
Taylor raised an eyebrow, a cold smile playing at the edges of her lips. “No, I think you made it clear at the ball that we're human. Though I’m sure that wasn’t meant as a compliment. As for your request, I don’t trust any of you enough to invite you into my home.”
The Car Lover guy chuckled darkly. “I thought you were so confident you'd be able to fight us off?” he sneered.
Liam was visibly tired; it had been an emotional rollercoaster of a night. He'd nearly given up hope of ever finding his mate and had stopped searching years ago. He had a lot of responsibilities and problems that required his full attention, and he didn't believe he could offer a safe life to a mate, let alone build a family.
He had accepted Alpha’s Derek's invitation not for the ball, but to meet with the Alphas and discuss business. But when he caught the scent of his mate... when he locked eyes with her, he was mesmerized by her beauty until he saw the fear in her eyes.
His mate wasn't happy to see him. She was terrified, paralyzed by fear.
It crushed him. His ego, his wolf, couldn't accept it. Both the man and wolf were fuming, enraged. In addition to that, this human interfered and made him feel like a horrible mate, terrifying his soulmate. It was too much. His temper flared, taking over. He wouldn't dare snap at his mate. He would never. But this human? She was the perfect outlet for all the frustration and anger that had been building inside him.
When Alpha Derek only managed to convince Emma to join them in his office by implying that the human's safety was on the line, it became painfully clear to him that this insufferable human was deeply important to Emma. In that moment, Liam realized that the path to Emma’s heart would go through this human.
Determined to make things right, he ordered his man to follow Taylor. He would meet her, clear up the misunderstanding, and prove to her that he would protect Emma with his very life.
As soon as his conversation with Derek, Emma, and her parents wrapped up, he shifted into his wolf form and ran to the location his delta had shared. What he hadn’t anticipated was just how feisty this human really was. Winning her over was going to be far more difficult than he had ever imagined. Frustrated, Liam rubbed his forehead, the pressure building as her insolence and sharp retorts gnawed at him. His patience was wearing thin, and he could feel the simmering anger inside him, threatening to explode at any moment. Exhaustion weighed on him, and he knew that if he didn’t regain control soon, he might lose it completely. He needed to end this conversation quickly—there were more important matters at hand, like finalizing plans to bring his mate into his pack.
“Who do I need to call to convince you that I mean you no harm?” Liam asked, his voice tinged with frustration.
Without missing a beat, Taylor replied “Derek.”
Liam pulled his smartphone from his pocket and dialed Derek's number, putting the call on speaker.
“Alpha Liam, any problems?” Derek answered immediately, his tone tense.
Taylor could sense Derek was on edge. He sounded tired and worried.
“Alpha Derek, I'm with Taylor, Emma’s friend. You're on speaker. I came to talk with her, but she doesn't trust me. Can you reassure her that I mean no harm? And, despite what she called me, I'm not Mr. Maniac. You'll need to be specific, and let her know that I won't kill her, hurt her or put her in any danger.”
“Of course. Taylor, can you hear me? First, please tell me you didn't call Alpha Liam a maniac." He sighed. "And I can confirm that nothing will happen to you. When Alpha Liam gives his word, it means something in our community.”
Derek paused before adding, “Please, keep your conversation civil. The situation is already complicated enough.”
"Okay, thank you for clearing that up, Derek. I'll talk with Liam. But ... Derek," Taylor hesitated before continuing, “ I'm really, really disappointed in you. In all of you. Good night.”
Taylor ended the call with a sharp tap, her gaze turning icy as she looked at the two men in front of her. She exhaled slowly, masking her frustration, and said, "Mr. Maniac. Car Lover. Follow me."
Without another word, she spun on her heel and marched toward her building, the men trailing in her wake.
