The Princess of the Night
The moon hung above the kingdom of Nocturne like a silver crown.
Its pale light spilled across the black towers of the royal castle, glimmering against the enormous stained-glass windows and the ancient stone walls. Beyond the castle, the city slept beneath a blanket of darkness. Narrow streets twisted between gothic buildings, and the sound of distant church bells occasionally echoed through the night.
Nocturne had belonged to vampires for centuries.
Humans told frightening stories about the kingdom.
They spoke of creatures who lived forever, drank blood, and feared nothing.
But among all the vampires of Nocturne, there was one name that frightened them more than any other.
Princess Victoria.
Victoria stood alone on the highest balcony of the castle.
Her long dark hair moved gently in the cold night breeze. She wore a simple black dress, elegant but without the extravagant jewels normally expected of a princess.
She stared at the kingdom below.
From this height, everyone looked so small.
So distant.
She preferred it that way.
Behind her, the enormous doors opened.
Victoria didn't turn around.
"Your Highness."
She recognized the voice immediately.
"Father."
King Lucien walked onto the balcony.
He was tall, imposing, and dressed in the traditional royal black coat embroidered with silver. His expression was always difficult to read, but Victoria knew him well enough to recognize the disappointment in his eyes.
"You disappeared from dinner again."
"I wasn't hungry."
"You haven't eaten properly for three nights."
"I'm a vampire, Father."
"I know what you are."
Victoria finally looked at him.
For a moment, neither spoke.
The king sighed.
"Your mother would have worried about you."
Victoria's expression softened for only a second.
"Don't."
Lucien looked away.
"I'm not trying to upset you."
"Then don't mention Mother."
The silence between them became heavier.
Queen Elena had died many years ago.
Victoria rarely spoke about her.
She had learned a long time ago that grief was easier to carry when nobody could see it.
King Lucien changed the subject.
"There is something we need to discuss."
Victoria already knew she wouldn't like what came next.
"What is it?"
"The royal council has approved the alliance."
Victoria frowned.
"What alliance?"
Lucien looked directly at her.
"Your marriage."
The wind suddenly felt colder.
Victoria stared at him.
"My what?"
"Your marriage."
"No."
Her answer came instantly.
Lucien's expression hardened.
"You haven't even heard who—"
"I don't need to."
"Victoria."
"No."
She turned back toward the kingdom.
"I am not marrying anyone."
"You are the princess of Nocturne."
"And?"
"And your choices affect this kingdom."
Victoria laughed quietly.
There was no happiness in it.
"Of course. I forgot."
Lucien's eyes narrowed.
"What does that mean?"
"It means I'm not your daughter tonight."
Victoria looked over her shoulder.
"Tonight I'm a political agreement."
"That's unfair."
"Is it?"
Lucien didn't answer.
The princess continued.
"Who is he?"
"The Crown Prince Adrian of Valemont."
Victoria's face remained emotionless.
"The northern kingdom."
"Yes."
"And what exactly does this marriage accomplish?"
"It unites two of the oldest vampire houses. Together, our kingdoms will be stronger than any other territory in the east."
Victoria shook her head.
"So that's it."
"Victoria—"
"You want me to marry a stranger because it will make the kingdom stronger."
"It's more complicated than that."
"It always is."
She turned around completely.
"I don't love him."
"Love can come later."
Victoria stared at her father.
"No."
Her voice was quiet.
"But it can't."
Lucien looked surprised.
Victoria continued.
"Not for me."
For several seconds, the king said nothing.
Then he spoke more softly.
"You've isolated yourself for years."
Victoria's expression changed.
"I prefer being alone."
"No. You tell yourself that because it's easier."
Her eyes hardened.
"You don't know what I prefer."
"I know my daughter."
"You knew my mother."
Lucien fell silent.
Victoria regretted the words immediately.
But she didn't apologize.
The king looked toward the moon.
"The royal announcement will be made in three nights."
Victoria's eyes widened.
"You already decided?"
"The council believes—"
"I don't care what the council believes."
"Victoria."
She stepped closer.
"If you announce this marriage without asking me, I will refuse it publicly."
Lucien's expression became stern.
"You wouldn't."
"Try me."
For the first time that night, something almost like fear appeared in the king's eyes.
Not fear of his daughter.
Fear of what she might become if pushed too far.
Everyone in Nocturne knew the stories.
They said Victoria had no heart.
They said she had defeated powerful vampires without mercy.
They said she could look into someone's eyes and make them tremble.
They called her ruthless.
Cold.
The Blood Princess.
But none of them knew the truth.
Victoria hated hurting people.
She hated violence.
She hated watching others suffer.
She simply had never learned how to show kindness without feeling vulnerable.
And vulnerability was something the royal family considered dangerous.
Especially for a future queen.
Lucien turned toward the door.
"Think carefully."
Victoria didn't answer.
The king left.
The doors closed behind him.
Victoria remained on the balcony.
Alone.
Again.
She looked at the moon.
"Three nights."
Her fingers tightened around the balcony railing.
Three nights until the entire kingdom learned that their princess was supposed to marry a man she had never met.
She closed her eyes.
For once, she wished she could disappear.
---
The following evening, Victoria walked through the castle gardens.
Unlike the royal halls, the gardens were quiet.
Black roses grew along the stone pathways, their petals almost blue beneath the moonlight. Tall cypress trees surrounded the garden, blocking it from the rest of the castle.
It was the only place Victoria could breathe.
She sat beside the old fountain.
For a few peaceful moments, she allowed herself to forget about the engagement.
Then she heard something.
Footsteps.
Victoria opened her eyes.
Someone was walking through the garden.
She stood immediately.
Nobody was supposed to be there.
A figure appeared between the trees.
A woman.
Victoria froze.
The stranger wore a dark cloak that concealed most of her appearance. She walked calmly, as though she belonged in the royal gardens.
Victoria's eyes narrowed.
"Stop."
The woman stopped.
Slowly, she turned around.
Their eyes met.
Victoria expected fear.
Everyone was afraid of the princess.
Instead, the woman simply looked at her.
Curiously.
Almost calmly.
"Who are you?"
The stranger smiled faintly.
"That's a strange question coming from a princess."
Victoria stepped forward.
"You haven't answered me."
"I could ask you the same thing."
Victoria frowned.
"You know who I am."
"Everyone knows who you are."
The woman's eyes traveled briefly across Victoria's face.
"But I don't think they know you."
Victoria said nothing.
Something about the stranger's words unsettled her.
Not because they were threatening.
Because they felt true.
"Leave."
The woman didn't move.
"Why?"
"Because I told you to."
"And if I don't?"
Victoria stared at her.
For the first time in years, someone had spoken to her without fear.
It should have angered her.
Instead...
It made her curious.
The woman stepped closer.
"I've heard stories about Princess Victoria."
"So have I."
"They say you're cruel."
Victoria's expression became cold.
"They're probably right."
The woman shook her head.
"No."
Victoria's eyes narrowed.
"You don't know me."
The stranger smiled.
"Neither does anyone else."
Before Victoria could respond, the woman stepped backward into the shadows.
"Wait."
But she was already gone.
Victoria rushed toward the trees.
Nothing.
No footsteps.
No movement.
Only the cold wind passing through the branches.
She looked around the garden.
Who was she?
And how had she entered the royal castle unnoticed?
Victoria returned to the fountain, but the peaceful feeling was gone.
For the first time in years, someone had looked at her...
And hadn't seen a monster.
She didn't know it yet, but that mysterious woman would soon change everything.
Including the fate of the Vampire Princess.
