Chris suddenly opened his eyes. He found himself lying on a flat dusty ground.
The air around him smelled of rotten flesh, and his head was pulsing with a mild headache.
Looking around where he lay, Chris suddenly noticed white bones and skulls scattered around him. One human skull lay on the ground right beside his head.
On seeing it, it suddenly startled him, and he quickly rose up to his feet, sweeping his gaze across the dusty ground, to see more dry bones.
The bones lay scattered everywhere, all around where he stood.
As he was looking down, Chris noticed his clothing.
He was wearing the exact black outfit that he'd been wearing, back when he was leaving his house to go meet up with Sofia.
He now wore the same black jeans pants, a white t-shirt inside, and a black leather jacket, alongside his black sneakers.
Thinking about his outfit immediately took him back to the incident. Chris could now vividly picture it in his head. As if it had actually happened.
The last thing he could remember was hearing his girlfriend shouting his name, then turning to see the truck, headed right for him.
What had happened after that?
Where was he now? Where was Sofia?
The questions kept coming.
Chris then suddenly remembered the moment of excruciating pain he had experienced, right after seeing the truck.
"That truck hit me," Chris suddenly said, talking to himself.
He then quickly lowered his arms onto his chest, touching his body, then lowering down everywhere.
The strange thing was, he now remembered that the truck had hit him, but he felt no pain whatsoever. And there was absolutely no injuries, anywhere around his body.
This was strange. What was happening here?
"Where am I?" Chris said.
He then looked around where he stood, to notice that he was standing at the top of a small hill.
The sky above him was completely covered by thick red clouds, and the light seeping through the clouds was dim and reddish.
Chris then swept his gaze all across the extensive scenery around where he stood.
He saw mountain ranges at the far distance, rolling down and hiding away, behind each other.
The ground below the mountains was mostly covered by thick forest terrain.
He then saw a massive waterfall, falling off a high rocky cliff, on the far right side from where he stood.
The water tumbled down in avalanches onto a lake below, then flowed down into a wide river, that cut across the endless lands below him.
Chris then looked up into the sky above him, and saw weird-looking creatures with long wings, flying across the sky above him.
The creatures looked nothing like the normal birds he knew. They were more like massive reptiles with vast wings, and they flew slowly across the skies.
Staring at the scenery of the landscape around him was actually a bit calming. So calming that he momentarily forgot about the confusion he had been experiencing.
Just as he was taking in the scenery, a sudden growl from the ground beside him, took him by surprise. Making him to suddenly jump off the ground, and look down towards where the deep growl came from.
On looking down, some sort of dark creature was crawling out of the ground, right beside where he stood. The creature's head was only a white skull, with no eyes or mouth.
Most of its body could not be seen clearly, because a dak fog waved in the air all around its shape.
Chris however saw the long sharp claws on the arms of the creature, as it suddenly clutched the ground, and pulled itself upwards.
The stranger thing about it was that the creature seemed to be crawling right out of the hard ground. How was that even possible?
"Holy s**t!" Chris shouted, looking down at the dark figure.
The first thing that came to Chris' mind was to run.
So he immediately turned around, facing the opposite direction from the creature, and immediately taking off running.
Even before he took four steps away, Chris suddenly tripped on a rock boulder on the ground.
He then fell off his feet, his body turning around in the air, then smashing hard onto the side of the hill. Chris then groaned slightly in pain, feeling the impact of the fall.
Even before he could think, he suddenly began rolling down the side of the small hill.
His tumbling down motion then continued to gain speed, his body rolling and rolling, over and over, headed down towards the rocks on the ground below the hill.
As he came closer towards the bottom of the small hill, Chris realized he couldn't wait to fall onto those rocks down there, that would not end well.
He knew he had to something, and fast.
He then looked down below him and saw a small groove on the side of the hill, with a thick root sticking out beside it.
On coming up towards the groove, Chris suddenly stretched his right hand forward, quickly holding onto the big root and immediately stopping his rolling body, at the side of the hill.
He then looked to his side and noticed that what he had previously seen as a small groove, was a actually some sort of cave, digging forward into the side of the hill.
That small cave was the perfect place to hide out, and figure out his next move. Or, at least, try to answer the questions in his mind.
Chris then quickly pulled himself forward along the ground, entering into the small cave by crawling along the hard rocky ground.
As soon as he entered into the cave and remained amidst the hard rocks, the environment inside was all dark. And he had no way of lighting it up.
Chris then turned himself around, inside the cave, turning to now face outwards, towards where the light was coming from.
As he now lay there, staring out beyond the small cave, Chris suddenly remembered his phone. Maybe he could call Sofia, or his mother, and ask her what happened. Maybe they'd have some answers.
He then quickly lowered his right arm down onto the front of his leg, touching it first, then feeling the phone inside his pocket.
As soon as he felt it, he smiled slightly in relief.
He then reached his hand into the pocket, and quickly removed his smartphone, moving his arm along the ground beside him, then bringing it up towards his face.
He then immediately pressed the power button, and stared at the screen, waiting for it to glow up.
It didn't.
Maybe it was off.
Chris then pressed the button again, and held it in, hoping to bring it on. But there was still nothing. It was as if the battery was dead.
Yet, Chris remembered that before he'd left his room, his battery was full.
What was all this s**t anyway?
And what was this place?
And what, in the world, was that thing that had chased him down the hill?
Christopher Auster had no idea that he was now in another reality. A dimension where smartphones could not help him anymore.
He had been thrown into a game world called Outath, inside The Interface.
And his life would never ever be the same again.
