The price of power
The sleek black limousine glided through the crowded streets of Seoul, the city’s lights reflecting off the tinted windows. Inside, Joon-hyuk Kwon sat with his back straight, staring out at the world that bowed to him, a world he owned in silence. His fingers drummed rhythmically on the leather armrest, a habit he couldn't shake.
At 28, Joon-hyuk had everything a man could desire—wealth, power, and the kind of influence that made people fear him. But the life that came with it was nothing more than a constant reminder of the blood on his hands, the cost of every victory.
The mafia was a family business. And no matter how high the stakes were, no matter how many lives were destroyed, the Kwon name always came first.
“Sir, we’ve arrived.” Kang Seo-jin’s calm voice broke his thoughts. She was his personal secretary, always efficient, always cold. She had a way of making every situation feel like a well-oiled machine—nothing personal, just business.
Joon-hyuk nodded without a word, his sharp eyes scanning the towering building of Kwon Enterprises as the car stopped. The heart of his empire. His kingdom.
He stepped out, his black tailored suit blending seamlessly with the shadows of the night. As he walked into the building, a surge of power rushed through him, the familiar pulse of control.
“Mr. Kwon, good to see you,” a familiar voice called from behind him. It was Park Jae-hyun, his childhood friend and CFO of Kwon Enterprises. His smile was warm, but there was an edge to it—an underlying tension that had been there ever since Joon-hyuk took over.
“Jae-hyun.” Joon-hyuk's greeting was curt, but his gaze lingered for a second longer than necessary. “What’s the situation?”
“We’ve got a board meeting in thirty minutes, but I’m more concerned about Min-seo. She’s pushing harder for control,” Jae-hyun said, his eyes scanning the hall as they walked toward the elevator. “You know how she operates.”
Joon-hyuk’s jaw tightened. Song Min-seo had always been a thorn in his side, someone who would stop at nothing to take his place, and she knew how to play the game of politics.
“I’ll deal with her later,” he said coldly. “We have bigger issues.”
Before Joon-hyuk could say more, his phone buzzed. He glanced down at the screen. An unknown number.
“Joon-hyuk Kwon?” The voice on the other end was low, controlled, almost too calm. “This is a warning. Stay out of Byung-ho Kim’s business, or you’ll regret it.”
A chill ran down Joon-hyuk’s spine, though he didn’t let it show. His father’s rivals had become bolder lately, and it was only a matter of time before they started making threats.
“You’re making a mistake,” he said coldly. “Kim Byung-ho doesn’t know who he’s messing with.”
The line went dead.
Joon-hyuk pocketed the phone, his face unreadable. He turned to Jae-hyun. “Get me everything on Byung-ho and his son. Now.”
Jae-hyun nodded and followed Joon-hyuk into the elevator, where the doors closed with a soft thud. The world outside might have been unaware, but inside the walls of Kwon Enterprises, danger was always lurking in the shadows.
Meanwhile...
Hana Lee adjusted her glasses nervously as she walked into the towering Kwon Enterprises building for her first day as an intern. The sleek marble floors, glass walls, and the hum of efficiency made her heart race with excitement—and a little fear. She had dreamed of this moment for so long, but now that she was here, it all felt so overwhelming.
She tried to calm her nerves, adjusting the strap of her purse as she made her way to the front desk. “Good morning! I’m Hana Lee, the new intern. I’m here for the orientation.”
The receptionist looked up with a blank expression, scanning Hana for a moment before offering a stiff smile. “Follow the signs to the conference room. Mr. Kwon is waiting.”
Hana nodded, her eyes wide as she made her way toward the elevators. Mr. Kwon. The name made her pulse quicken. She had heard rumors—stories whispered about the Kwon family. But nothing prepared her for the real thing.
The elevator doors opened, and there he was.
Joon-hyuk Kwon stood at the far end of the hallway, flanked by his secretary and other executives. He was every bit the image of power—tall, sharply dressed, his presence commanding the room without a word.
Hana’s breath hitched. There was something about him that drew her in, something she couldn’t explain. But she quickly reminded herself: He was out of her league.
With a deep breath, she walked past him to the conference room, determined to prove herself. What she didn’t know, however, was that her life was about to change forever.
To be continued...
