Chapter 5
They sat in silence for a long, long time. Tawni was fidgeting next to her, and even Kris was starting to feel the awkwardness. It was like her parents wanted to say something, but they couldn’t form the words. As for Kris, she had been content to let them all sit in silence, but now it was starting to become too much to bear.
“Where are you parked?” she finally asked.
“The opposite side of campus,” her mother told her.
“Nack? Did you get that?” she asked. He rapped his knuckles on the top of the wagon: yes. Nack was good with directions. He would be able to follow the sprawl of campus and find out where they needed to go, more or less.
“Is that him?” her father asked. His voice quivered, ever so slightly. He’d never seen a man like Nack before.
