NORTHERN MISSOURIThe Kansas City Monarchs players woke at first light after the all-night ride and came alive with n***o league stories.
As the bus rolled on, one veteran said that Josh Gibson once hit a ball clean out of Yankee Stadium, over the triple deck in left field. Monarchs manager Frank Duncan said he hadn’t heard of that one. But he knew that Gibson smashed one to the back wall circling the bleachers in center field, a distance of close to six-hundred feet.
“And I got it from a good source,” Duncan went on. “I once saw him hit one over third in New Orleans that cracked a foul pole. But did you hear about the one he hit in Forbes Field, Pittsburgh, when he was with the Crawfords?”
“Which one was that?” a rookie asked.
