KANSAS CITY, MISSOURIBlues Stadium was a single-decked, 17,000-seat hunk of wood and steel. It was built in 1923 at a cost of $400,000 on the corner of 22nd Street and Brooklyn Avenue, two miles from downtown, on what once was a frog pond and ash heap. Considered a pitcher’s park with its 350 feet down the lines and 450 feet to straightaway center, the prevailing winds at certain times in the summer heat did however blow towards left field, a great advantage to right-handed power hitters. Home of the New York Yankees’ Triple A Kansas City Blues, Blues Stadium was also rented out to the n***o American League Kansas City Monarchs, masters of the winning tradition that made the town of Kansas City and the Monarch team the talk of Blackball all over the United States.
