Chapter I
"Good Morning Scarlett" Jacob said with a wide smile on his face, and blender in his hand, looking at me stepping towards him.
"Morning" I firmly kept my handbag on the counter and said it with a numb voice.
"Now what" Jacob asked, blending the ice cream faster this time.
"Can you please do it later?" I said, pointing to the blender in his hand. The noise of the beater was getting on my nerves.
"2 smoothie orders are pending" He said, continuing his action.
I stepped inside the storeroom rolling my eyes. I came back after a while wearing an apron folding my hands to my back, trying to tie the belt of the apron. Jacob helped me with it and went back to blending ice cream. I took the nuts out of the fridge and stood beside him chopping nuts on the chopper board.
"Landlord sent me a notice to raise the rent, which is almost double of the current rent," I said, moving a tray full of chopped nuts to him.
"I already told you he is gonna do that, I know he is selling that room to someone" Jacob was done with his blending. He said keep the blender on the other side.
"I think I shall move somewhere else, this place is too costly anyway." I said and decorated serving glasses with chocolate syrup inside.
"And then at what time you will come here ? You just live upstairs and it takes 2 hours for you to come after opening time, and if you move somewhere else I don't think you will be able to come before evening." He said it poured cream in the glasses and smirked at the end.
"Point" I moved back and sat on the bar stool kept near the counter.
Jacob served orders and returned to Scarlett. "Do you want me to help you??" He asked, in his voice as soft as he could do.
"Thanks but I already owe you too much, not this time"I replied, cupping his face with my hand.
"Did you find any paying guests?" He asked,
"Not yet, my broker said I am too choosy, but how I couldn't be, afterall I also have to think about my son's safety" I said, in a worried tone.
"Why don't you stick a pamphlet here?" Jacob said and turned back to the counter.
"Do you think it will help ?" I followed him.
"Of Course, colleges opened just a week ago, students must be looking for rooms nearby, but you don't be too choosy this time" Jacob said and got busy collecting orders.
Jacob always had quick ideas for solving my problems. Not only mine but also problems of my 6 years old son Ronnie. Being a single mother sometimes it becomes difficult for me to handle Ronnie alone, so Jacob being friend of me and Ronnie as well helps me most of the time. Me and Jacob started this cafe an year ago, initially it was quite difficult to set this business up but now it is on its peak. Especially during the college days, our cafe is blessed and full of college students.
I opened my laptop and typed one pamphlet and printed instantly with no graphics no design but in plain words and large font size-
"A Room for Paying Guests Available.
Contact Person- Scarlett Tylor
(Only for girls)"
I placed the paper in Jacob's hand, he stuck it on the most exposed size of wall so it will be easily visible for students visiting here.
The flat I am living in is way bigger than I need, I don't really require a house with 2 bedrooms to live in, maybe in future, but now my son is too small to have a separate bedroom. But this was the only room available nearby, so having a roommate is essential for sharing the rents.
****
It's been 3 days since I posted that pamphlet on the wall. I had received only one approach yet, but trust me she wasn't the type of girl I was looking to be my roommate.
"A chainsmoker roommate" not at all. Not good for my son. I don't understand how these teenagers get addicted to smoking at such a small age.
Lost in my own thoughts and cleaning the counter I realised that Jacob's idea of sticking advertisements here is not working well also brokers I asked who are useless. I took the pamphlet off the wall and threw it out of the cafe frustratedly. Jacob has plans with his friends so he left earlier. I was almost done with my work. But I had to wait until Jacob came back. I was completely annoyed. I opened my laptop and typed "rooms on monthly rents nearby my location" on the search column. Before my screen would show the search result, the male voice grabbed my attention. I lifted my head up to the voice.
I looked at the boy about 17-18 years old standing in front of me, at the other side of the counter. He was wearing a red colored football costume and blue cap on his head. He was sweating from up to down, maybe he was here just after his practice. He was handsome and was too different from students who regularly visit here. He was holding a backpack on his shoulder with one hand and one s**t of paper in another hand. He was waiting for my response with one of his eyebrows raised, I opened my mouth to say something but the drop of sweat that trailed down from his sideburns to his sharp pointed jawlines caught my attention, It paused me for a while with my mouth opened. He noticed me admiring him, he raised both his eyebrows may be the way I was behaving. His facial expressions were reminding me about someone. His expressions were similar to the person I hate most in my life, but at the same time I was unable to take my eye away from him, it was like something I wanted to see for decades.
He shaked paper he had in his hand before my eyes, and repeated his last words, "Excuse Me!!!" But louder this time.
His loud tone brought me back in my senses. I looked immediately away from him, embarrassedly.
"Sorry, it's Saturday, we close early" I turned back to the laptop, pretending he was busy with very important work, so he could leave without a word. It was very difficult to talk to him without admiring his body language.
"No, I just want to.." he said in his voice lower and convincing.
"You can't have whatever you want, we are close, come tomorrow." I stopped him in the middle of his sentence and said in a more rude tone, still avoiding eye contact with him.
"Tomorrow at what time I can meet Scarlett Tylor" He said, rolling a paper in his hands, that made me realise it to be my pamphlet.
"Oh, I am sorry, I just thought you are here to have a meal" the words came out of my mouth immediately, but this definitely helped me to act normal.
"I found this outside, I just wanted to know if this room is still available, can I talk to Miss Scarlett please" He smiled confusingly and pointed me to the rolled paper in his hand.
"I am Scarlett, and I am really sorry to inform you that the offer says "only girls" if you have read it carefully." I said and shut my laptop down, anyway I wasn't able to concentrate on whatever I was doing before.
"That means the room is still vacant, isn't it", he said with a wide smile on his face.
"Yes, but I think you haven't heard me, the room is only for a girl, I can't give it to you, sorry" I said, in the kindest tone possible.
"See, that's unfair, I mean it's 20th century, who puts such stupid conditions." He said, rolling his eyes.
All his actions were making me feel way weak, I was unable to distract myself. Each word was taking me in the flash back with the person who ruined my whole life, “Samuel”. This guy has a strong semblance of him, which was causing me uncomfort but the pleasure at the same time. I turned to him and said, looking into his eyes. "Listen boy, my room, my conditions, also you are too small, I don't think you can afford it, you find your place somewhere else, you can leave now, thank you." I pointed to the exit door at my last words and faced my back at him, stepping towards the storeroom.
"See, there is no money issue, I can pay double if you ask me to," he said, yelling behind me.
His words stopped me, this is what I all need right now, financial support. If he pays double, it will be my total rent, so the burden of rent will be zero on me. I was calculating how much I will save if I say yes to this offer. I did not turn to him but kept thinking all this. But because I stopped stepping into the storeroom, somewhere he had realized that I am in need of money, "I am ready to pay triple, think about it." he yelled with a new offer.
His words reached my ears, and immediately I imagined dollar bills running and flying in my mind, I did not want to look greedy and stupid but I couldn't help. I was just about to turn, when I heard the voice of Jacob stepping inside.
"Tripple for what?" Jacob asked, leaping from the other side of the counter to my side.
"House rent" I said, and placed the pamphlet in his hand.
"That's a good deal" Jacob said, looking at me with a smile on his face
I pointed to the bracket on the pamphlet "Only For Girls" written in, and looked at the boy standing facing us.
Jacob looked at him and immediately grabbed my wrist and pulled me inside the storeroom, I followed Jacob yelling and my eyes were on that boy.
"What is wrong with you?" Jacob said, as soon as we entered the store room.
"It's about the safety of my son," I said, looking into his eyes.
"How you can think every boy is gonna harm your Ronnie, even girls can spoil him if they want to, see this is the best offer till now you have received, just grab it. Ronnie is just 6 years old, you have a babysitter for him, we are there for him, no one's gonna harm him, think about it."
"But isn't it too strange, why this random guy is ready to pay this much, I am suspicious" I said, folding my hands on my chest, looking away from Jacob.
"Don't indulge in a contract then, tell him he will be on trial for initial months, and keep looking for another roommate, and once you find as per your choice, tell him he failed on trial. Till then you can share a house with him, and he will pay triple the amount." Jacob said, grabbing both my shoulders in his hands, trying to make me understand.
"Ok fine" I was finally convinced with his words, also I had no other option. I stepped out of the storeroom, Jacob followed me.
I looked at the boy standing there, he was deeply staring at a luxury sports wrist watch in his hand. He lifted his head up immediately.
"So, Mr…" I said and paused when I realised I haven't asked his name yet.
"It's James," he said with a smile, maybe because my tone was a little kind this time.
"Yes, So Mr. James, I am thinking about your offer, only because I find you in urgent need, but you look a little messed today, come tomorrow morning at 10, we will have to talk about it."
"Can't we have a quick talk right now, at least tell me yes or no" he said, rubbing his eyebrows with his index finger, wiping out sweat on it.
I could clearly see movement of nerves in his hands, as he was moving his finger from one to another end of his eyebrows.
Is it fair to get attracted towards this teenager boy?.
Damn!!
"Yes, but I have certain rules and conditions in my house, I will hand over the list to you tomorrow, then you tell me yes or no!" I said and smirked at the end.
