Chapter 1: Rain and Secrets
The rain hadn’t even stopped when the Alpha King pulled me into his study.
My mother’s funeral was only hours old. My black dress was still wet. My hair stuck to my neck. I stood there shaking a little, not from cold, but from the way Darian Blackthorn looked at me.
Like he already owned me.
“Close the door, Kaelira.”
I closed it.
He walked around the big desk slow, like he had all the time in the world. Tall. Strong. Silver in his dark hair and beard. Those gold eyes never left me.
“You shouldn’t be alone tonight,” he said.
“I’m fine.”
“No. You’re not.”
He stopped right in front of me. One hand slid around my waist. The other tilted my chin up. His thumb brushed my bottom lip.
“Your mother is gone. The pack will expect me to take another queen one day. Until then…” His voice dropped low. “You belong here. With me.”
I should have pushed him away. I didn’t.
He kissed me hard.
His mouth was hot and demanding. His tongue pushed past my lips like he had every right. I made a soft sound and he growled into my mouth, pulling me tighter against him. I felt how hard he already was. Thick. Heavy. Pressed right against my stomach through his clothes.
His hand slid down, grabbed my ass, and squeezed. Then he dragged the wet dress up my thigh until his fingers found bare skin.
“No underwear,” he muttered against my lips. “Good girl.”
I was already wet. Traitor body. He felt it when his fingers slipped between my legs. Two thick fingers pushed inside me without warning. I gasped and grabbed his shoulders.
“Quiet,” he ordered. “My sons are upstairs.”
He f****d me with his fingers right there against the desk, slow and deep, curling them just right. My legs shook. I bit my lip hard so I wouldn’t moan. His mouth moved to my neck, sucking, biting, marking me where no one would see under my hair.
“You’re already dripping for me,” he growled. “My dirty little secret.”
I came on his fingers, shaking, trying so hard to stay silent. He didn’t stop until I finished. Then he pulled his hand free, licked his fingers clean, and looked me dead in the eyes.
“Tonight. After the house is quiet. You come back here. Understand?”
I nodded, still breathless.
A floorboard creaked above us.
Both of us froze.
Footsteps. Coming down the stairs.
Ronan.
Darian’s face went cold and blank in a second. He stepped back like nothing had happened.
“Go,” he said quietly. “Now.”
I fixed my dress with shaking hands and slipped out the side door. My legs still felt weak. I could still feel his fingers inside me. My neck throbbed where he had bitten me.
I leaned against the cold wall in the hallway and tried to breathe.
They can’t know. None of them can know.
I had drunk the special tea earlier. The one that hid scents. One cup every night. It was the only thing keeping this house from turning into a bloodbath.
Cassian turned the corner before I could move.
He stopped when he saw me. His gold eyes narrowed.
“Kaelira. You’re shaking.”
“Just the rain.”
He stepped closer. Too close. Cassian always looked at people like he was solving a puzzle. He leaned in a little and breathed in near my neck.
My heart almost stopped.
The tea held.
He frowned for a second, then offered his arm.
“Come on. Ronan is in a bad mood. Thorne is worse. Better if we’re all together.”
I took his arm because saying no would look strange. We walked into the great hall together.
Ronan stood by the fire, arms crossed, that scar on his brow making him look even more intense. Thorne was half-lying in a chair, one boot on the table, watching me with half-closed eyes.
Ronan walked straight up to me, took my wet cloak off himself, and let his fingers brush the side of my neck. Right over the mark his father had just left.
Heat shot through me.
Thorne sat up slowly. His nose twitched.
“You smell like rain,” he said. Then quieter, “And something else.”
I kept my face calm even though my stomach dropped.
Thorne stared at my throat for a few long seconds. Then he smiled that lazy smile of his and leaned back again.
“Sit with us, little sister. The house is too quiet tonight.”
I sat.
Four pairs of gold eyes in the same room. The father at the head of the table. The three sons around me. None of them knowing what the others had already done to me. None of them knowing what I still planned to let them do.
Darian raised his glass.
“To the dead.”
“To the dead,” the sons answered.
I drank. The wine tasted like secrets.
Above the fireplace, the old painting of Queen Lyria stared down. She had my face. For a second I could have sworn the painted woman smiled at me.
Then three hard knocks slammed against the main doors.
The steward came in looking pale.
“My King… riders from the Ashfang border. They brought a marriage contract. And a demand.”
The whole room went silent.
“They say the stepdaughter of Blackthorn was promised to Alpha Vex before you married her mother. They came to take her.”
Darian’s eyes locked on me.
Ronan’s hand gripped the back of my chair so hard I heard the wood creak.
Cassian went completely still.
Thorne’s lazy smile disappeared.
Four different kinds of possession hit me at the same time.
And somewhere deep inside my chest, the dead queen I used to be started laughing.
Because the real storm hadn’t even started yet.
