Chapter 1 First Shift
Maeve's POV;
"Are you excited for tomorrow?" Em asked me as we were walking into my house.
"I'm really excited, but more nervous then anything. I don't know if I'm ready for my first shift." I said giving her a half smile.
"I can't lie and say it dosen't hurt, it hurts like hell. But it's such an awsome experience. Then you can meet your mate! Em squeeled.
"Hopefully." Mel said with a sad tone.
Mel had turned eighteen, five months ago and has yet to meet her mate. We all thought it would have been Kallen, they had been dating for over two years and there chemistry was amazing. He turned eighteen a few weeks before Mel did and found his mate instantly. Unfortunately for Mel it wasn't her, it was Grace someone from a different pack and she moved to our pack days later. It has been hard on Mel to see them all mushy at school and back at the Pack all the time. She hasn't been the same since, we all hope she can find her mate soon. Emily on the other hand, had met her mate Zach the night of her turn. He's one of the pack fighters and a really nice guy, he treats her so well.
And now it's my turn, my birthday is tomorrow, I'm hoping my mate is in this Pack I would hate to move away from my family and friends like Grace did, I'm really nervous to see who it is. Being rejected by my mate has always been a fear, but it seems like it never bothered anyone else. We learned through out school how painful a rejection can feel, some have died from the pain it caused. It is rare, but since learning that, I've always been scared.
It's Saturday morning and I started my weekend as usual. I woke up around 6:30 am and headed to my bathroom to quickly get ready, putting my shoulder length brown hair in a half pony, and adding some light makeup to my eyes and lips. I slipped on a light blue summer dress that ended right above my knees and paired it with my white runners. I expected my parents were already working and I headed over to the Pack House to help my mom in the kitchen. It was fairly dark out still, most pack members were probably still sleeping, well the pack fighters were already training. when I headed into the kitchen my mom Annie, already had baskets full of a variety of muffins and cookies sitting on the counter, as well as a massive pile of dishes in the sink. My mom Annie is the head baker, and did most of the pastires and desserts for the pack. Shes tall with a slim build but still very toned, with long straight chocolate brown hair. My dad John was a jack of all trades, he did many things around the pack including, electrical, plumbing and has built most of the houses in the Pack. He was tall with dark brown short curly hair, and a well trimmed beard, he trained lots with the pack fighters to keep his strength up, but wasn't as big as most of them. Most of the time I helped both of them out before and after school and sometimes on the weekend. I was learning as much as I could when I had time so I could do my share around the Pack.
"Good morning mom." I said heading over to the pantry and grabbing an apron off the hook, before heading to the sink.
"Good morning dear, happy birthday! I'm sorry your father and I weren't at home when you woke up, we wanted to get things done so we could spend the weekend with you." She said giving me a heart warming smile.
Duncans POV:
Sam and I and a few other of the Pack fighters had just finished showering from our morning workout.
"I'm starving, that work out this morning kicked my ass." Zach said exhausted.
"Seriously, these last few have been the hardest we've done." Cam replied.
"At least they gave us tomorrow off, tonight's gonna be fun." I said with a big smile.
"I can't wait for tonight." Cam said doing a little dance as we headed back to the pack house.
"Me neither, it's been awhile since we've had a party. I'm exhausted with finals coming up, it will be nice to have some fun. On top of finals, my father has had me doing so much extra stuff the last few months to help me prepare to take over after graduation."
"My dad has been getting me prepared to be Beta as well. We need to have as much fun as we can before we're in our rolls." Sam said.
"Agreed." I said as we walked into the dinning room. There was already some people sitting down to eat, and a few lined up at the buffet. We grabbed our plates and started pilling on the food. When I got to the pastries I searched the options for my favourite.
"Yes!" I said in my head. My favorite was banana with blueberries, Annie didn't make them often but they were delicious. I walked over to the table and placed my plate down, and headed to the kitchen. As soon as I walked in Annie saw me and smiled. She grabbed something off the counter and tossed it at me. It was another muffin wrapped in swranwrap.
"Your the best." I responded and headed back to the dinning room. Annie always saved me an extra one.
Meaves POV;
As the sun began to set and it started to get dark, anticipation filled my body. In no time my first shift would happen. I was staring out the window when my thoughts were intrupted.
"Thanks for dinner, Mr and Mrs Holden. We're gonna get going to the party, are you sure you don't want us to come with you?" Mel asked with a concerned face.
"I'm sure, I'll meet you at the party later." I said giving them both a big smile.
As they both left, I looked back at my parents."I should get going, its getting dark I'll see you later." I said waving as I left.
"Be safe Mae, and call us if anything goes wrong." My dad yelled.
I took a deep breath of fresh air as I stepped outside, and headed down the road. I wanted to be by myself for my first shift and the lake would be the perfect place. With the future Alpha throwing a party tonight, noone should be down there. I followed the dirt road, watching as the sky got darker. It took only a few minutes until I was at the Lake. The view was breathtaking. Our pack was in a beautiful area, we were secluded; a few hours to any major cities, and about 30 minutes to the nearest town. We were surrounded by the beauty of nature, lots of wildflowers, streams and even a waterfall about 15 minutes a way. As I walked up to the lake, I stripped out of my clothes and placed them on one of the benches. I knew my first shift would start soon, and I didnt want to wreck my new dress. In school we were taught a few things to help us on our first shift. First was to kneel on the ground; this was to avoid falling. A large portion of people collapse from the pain, and falling could cause more injury. Second was to calm your mind, and become one with nature. I closed my eyes, and focused on my breathing. Letting my other senses take over; the cold grass poking my bare skin, the sweet aroma of the wildflowers tickling my nose. As I tried to keep my mind calm, pressure started to form on my spine. As it grew it started causing extreme pain. I leaned down on my hands and dug my nails into the dirt trying to keep my balance, I was getting so dizzy and my body felt so hot and clamy. As I tried to focus on the grass infront of me, with each blink my vision got more and more blurry.
"Am I dying?" I thought to myself.
...
My eyes jolted open, as I looked around me.
"Ugh.. what happened?"
"Your awake, are you alright?" A beautiful voice asked.
I looked around confused wondering where the voice was coming from. I went to push my self up when I looked down and noticed the furry paws in front of me.
Memories of what happened before I fainted replayed in my head, and a wash of relief came over me.
"You must be my wolf, I'm Meave." I could hear her giggle in my mind.
"I am Ulta. I will help you learn how to walk in wolf form, just let me know whenever you want me to take over."
"Okay." I said. "I'm ready whenever you are." I could feel as she helped me pick ourselves up, we took a few wobbly steps up to the lake, so I could see our reflection. "Wow." I said softly. "You are beautiful." Ulta has reddish-brown fur with hints of black and white. We walked along the end of the lake, for a few minutes before I was able to get the hang of walking on my own. I picked up my pace and started to run around the forest. It was as a new feeling, the wind blowing through our fur, our heightened secenes it felt so freeing. As the wind picked up a delicious scent sent shivers through us, Ulta took over and bolted following the smell. Within a few minutes we were back at the Pack house. Our mate was inside, I felt so nervous. I sat outside for a minute before we shifted back. It was still incredibly painful, but not as bad as before.
"Emily was right, this hurts like hell." Once I regained composure, and the pain subsided, I slipped in through the back door and grabbed one of the many robes hanging up. I followed the sweet smell of pine and fresh grass to the main area of the party, and there was my mate. It felt like the whole world was in slow motion, as he turned to look at me. A soft smile appeared on his face, Beta Samuel was my mate. He walked over to me and grabbed my hand sparks tingled through my body as he lead me to the kitchen where we would have some privacy and the music wasn't so loud. His smile slowly faded once we were alone. My heart started to sink.
"Oh no, he's gonna reject me." I thought to myself. He embraced me in a big hug, and I inhaled his scent, he gave me butterflies. The hug didn't last long before he pulled away, the sparks vanishing as he let go. He looked at me for a moment before he signed and looked down.
"Are you gonna reject me?" I said so quietly you could barley hear me.
"Of cource not!" He said grabbing my hand. "Its just." He paused before continuing. " I didn't expect to find my mate so fast, I wanted to stay single for the rest of High School and have fun and experience things, before being with my mate."
"Oh." Was the only thing I could muster up.
"But Graduation is just a few weeks away, and then I'm all yours." He said with a grin. I tried to force a smile, but my heart was breaking.
