The Angel in my Darkness

Alexis BEEP BEEEP BEEEP!" Ugh turn off" I groan while turning off my alarm on my phone looking down at my phone and see a text from my best friend “Happy birthday b***h!!!!!” chuckling at my phone a little bit throwing it across the room onto my makeup chair pulling the blanket back over my head. My birthday isn’t till tomorrow, but she always likes to be the first one to say happy birthday to me. In barges in my brother without knocking like always.  “don’t you ever knock??” saying without ever taking my head out from under my blankets knowing exactly who just walked in. “Nope” he says flopping down onto my bed beside me. Pulling the blanket down, I look at him with the deadliest stare I can muster hoping to knock him out with my mind so I can go back to sleep.  “Wow, I know you aren’t a morning person but damn if looks can kill I’d be dead” he says giving me his biggest puppy dog eyes which is ironic since we are werewolves. He always knows how to soften my mood; he may be my big brother, but he acts like 10 years old most of the time. Softening my glare slightly I act like I’m going to hug him and shove him onto the floor with a THUD. Laughing hysterically to myself on my bed before hearing a playful growl knowing what’s coming next, I jump off my bed and jet out of my room as fast as I can knowing he is right on my heels as I enter the kitchen to the sounds of my mom cooking a big breakfast for all of us. “ALEXIS” I hear him yell after me as I hide behind my dad hoping to stop the oncoming attack of tickles I know is about to happen. My dad laughs at our antics as they seem to happen so often. As soon as my Micah comes barreling into the kitchen.  “Breakfast is Ready!” my mother says in a sing song voice. “Ok mom in a minute right after I get Ally.”  “No now, everyone at the table “  “But Mom!”  “No buts except yours in a chair” she says giving him the look that says ‘I dare you to try “Fine” he sits in his usual spot as I take mine. “Thank you, mom,” I say looking at her making sure to make it as sweet as I possibly can. She sends me a wink knowing exactly what she just saved me from. As we are all eating my mom starts up a conversation “So what is everyone’s plans for today?”  “Well Micah and I both have training today but since its Saturday its only half day today.”  Micah lets out a “whoop whoop” before shoveling down more food. My mom shakes her head at the lack of manners he has before turning her gaze to me clearing her throat.  “Ahem” looking up like a deer in the headlights I swallow my bite “I don’t know maybe just finish some homework or hangout with Ava.”  “Oooo don’t have too much fun now” Micah says sarcastically not even looking up at his food.  Kicking him as hard as I can under the table then smiling sweetly.  “Darling why don’t you go out and have some fun? Maybe go shopping?” “Daddy, you know I am a homebody, I would rather read a book then be tortured at the mall with Ava”  “Well, whatever your plans are make sure you are back home by 10 pm so we have enough time to get ready before you shift at midnight”.  Smiling but keeping quite I finish my breakfast and thank my mother before disappearing back into my room. To tell you the truth I am very nervous about the shift and receiving my wolf spirit. I try to keep my mind busy by finishing up my homework for Monday. Next thing I know my door is being thrown open and in walks my best friend.  “What the hell Ally? I have been texting you all day.”  What does she mean all day? Looking up at the clock on my wall it reads 3pm. Holy crap I have been sitting here for hours now that I think about it, I vaguely remember my mom walking in with lunch of some sort.  “Hello earth to Ally?!?!”  Shaking my head, I look over to where Ava is sitting eating my long forgotten lunch.  “Sorry Ave, I must have to really into my homework.”  “Come on I need attention from my best friend” she said while dramatically melting out of her chair and onto the floor. “Being a little dramatic there Ave?”  “No! I been at home waiting for you to text me back and let me know what we are doing for your birthday tomorrow, Plus I never got a text back from my awesome birthday text this morning!”  As soon as she brought up my birthday my nerves set back in, and I started biting my lip. Sitting straight up as soon as she saw me biting my lip.  “Ally, what is wrong you always bit your lip when something is wrong or your nervous, so which one is it?”  “It’s nothing, nothing” waving my hand in the air.  “Alright Alexis spill it or I’m going to call Micah in here to get it out of you” Contemplating how serious she actually , when she goes to open her mouth I shove my hand over mouth.  “Ok Ok, I will tell you… im really nervous about getting my wolf spirit and shifting for the first time”.  “Why I just had mine last month and it was fine, not saying it didn’t hurt but it was so crazy seeing my wolf and now hearing her in my head all the time even when I don’t want to”  “Thanks Ave you always make me feel better” giving her a sideways hug. “Alexis its time!” My mother calls from the back door while im taking my time leaving my room.  “I’m coming mom” putting my hair back into a low ponytail and giving myself a small pep talk and walking out the door. “Ready sweetie?”  “Mhmm, let’s go” we all started walking to a small opening just behind our house just past the forest line. My mother sets a blanket down for when I start to shift sending me a calming smile hoping to calm some of my nerves that she sees on my face.  “Ok it’s just about time” my father says clapping his hands trying to break the silence. Taking a large breath in and out I start stripping off my baggy shirt so I’m just in an old sports bra and spankz. The moment I hear my dad’s watch hit 12am I start feeling hot so I step out of the shadow of the tree and into the moon light I start to feel so hot I fall to my knees breathing heavy. I can hear my mom in the back round trying to tell me to breathe through it! What does she think I’m doing down here? Taking a nap of course I’m trying to breathe through it. Finally after what felt like an hour but was probably like a minute or two, looking up to see this beautiful large wolf made of moonlight start walking towards me. I am so in awe of how beautiful she is that I don’t realize that she has stopped right in front of me. Watching me back in curiosity I take her lead and wait for what to do next, she starts to bow her head, so I lower mine and we touch foreheads. As soon as we touched, I heard a voice in my head  “Hello Alexis. My name is Angel I am your wolf, and we are about to shift. Please don’t try and fight it as it will only make it worse” “You are beautiful” I say in my mind through gasps of air. “Thank you but we are one I was made for you so that makes you just as beautiful, Now breathe we are about to shift” she says as calmly as she can.  The jolts of white hot the pain and cracking bones break through the calmness that Angel was trying to project to me for what feels like forever until I can’t hold it anymore I let out a scream which turns into a howl half way through, then everything stops. Like all the sounds in the forest just stopped I thought I was deaf until I heard my mom and dad gasp. Finally coming out of the daze of shifting and now standing on four legs I take my first step and shake out my fur turning completely around looking for where my family is standing. Micah was the first to step forward.  “You’re HUGE!” he says while running his fingers through my fur. Nudging him playfully I look at my parents as they have yet to say anything, so I whine and lay at their feet waiting. After the shock must have worn off my dad crouches down  “Ally you really are beautiful, but we need to go home quickly so can you please shift back now” he says while looking around to make sure no one was watching us.  Whimpering I realize I have no clue on how to switch back to my body, starting to panic I get up and start pacing.  “Ally relax, I’m here to help calm down” Jumping at the sudden sound of her voice in my head , I forgot she was there.  Giggling slightly “how could you forget we just shifted like 5 minutes ago.”  “Well I was a bit preoccupied having a panic attack or have you forgotten”. I must have been standing there not moving for a while, mind linking my wolf cause from the side I hear my father clear his throat looking very nervous reminding me of what I was trying to do.  “OK, to switch back just think of your human body and you will switch back” Angel says quickly noticing how nervous dad is looking. Once back in my body I realized I still have my clothes on, hmm well that’s interesting everyone else to busy trying to pack everything up to notice. “That’s not the only thing we can do” Angel says quietly in the back of my mind. But before I can even address it I am being pulled back home by my mother with my father leading and Micah bring up the back. Dad must have mind linked him in on something because he is no longer my fun loving brother he is in full warrior mode making sure nothing happens.
