CHAPTER ONE: Who killed Dhrel?
Rain’s POV: There was blood everywhere when my eyes tore open. On my hands. On my dress. On the wall and on the bed. I sat up, dazed. I was in an unfamiliar room and a knife fell out of my blood stained hands. Panic clawed through me as I jumped out of the bed and rushed to the door. Within seconds, it was kicked open with a force. Three guards broke into the room and yanked at me. "What's happening?" I shrieked as they shoved me out of the room. "You'll pay for your crimes." A familiar voice hissed in the hallway. I jerked my head sideways and saw my best friend, Starr, standing a distance away. "Starr!" I cried out, relieved to see her, as I struggled to break free from the grip of the guards around me. "I have nothing to do with a criminal like you!" She shot at me. She turned to the guards and growled, "Take her away. She murdered him!" I blinked. Murdered who? I didn't have time to wonder why she was speaking to me in that manner, but I knew that something was wrong. The guards roughly pulled me down the hallway and led me into the Council's chambers. "The killer is here!" A male voice rang out as I was dragged into the hall. What? Killer? I threw my head back in confusion as my eyes fell on the crowd that was gathered in the large hall. Strong hands pulled me to the center of the chamber and as blood dripped from my face to the floor, I looked down. Fear snaked through me. My blood! “This cannot be happening, no!!!!” I yelled sobbing. I whipped my head around and caught sight of Clay. Clay was my mate who had recently rejected me, and he was the second son of Alpha Thorne. His hands were folded on his chest as he eyed me. Immediately, he rose up from his seat, pacing few steps towards me. My breath hitched for a moment as I watched his lips draw back in a snarl. "Clay..." I whimpered. "Keep my name out of your mouth!" He shot at me. I flinched, not expecting the reaction I got from him. When he was close enough, he wagged a finger in my face and hissed, "Why did you do it?" "What did I do?" I asked him, weak and confused. "Why did you kill my brother, Dhrel? Is it because I rejected you as my mate?" He broke into a mirthless laugh. A chill ran down my spine. "Clay, what are you talking about? " “You have always been up to no good. My greatest joy is that rejected you when I had the chance to. Quit the pretense and tell us all why you killed Dhrel!" "Killed Dhrel?" I repeated, even more confused. The crowd booed and I heard the angry voices of people who were shouting that I should get killed. I felt numb as I looked up at the man who stood before me. “Clay, please,” I pleaded, “I don't know what they are all talking about. I didn't do anything" “Lies, you keep spitting lies, but today we will end it all." He barked. His words felt like a slap across my face. "What were you doing in Dhrel's room?" "Dhrel's room?" "Don't try to act dumb! The guards found you in Dhrel's room. How did you get in there?" My voice broke into a sob, "I don't know" He drew close to me, his breath fanning my face. Then, he leaned to my ear and whispered, "Rain, if you tell me the truth, I'll help you." I sobbed harder. I had no idea what he was talking about. Tell him what truth? When he saw that I wasn't going to respond, he pulled away from me and snapped his fingers in the air. "Father, you may take over now!" He said to his father, Alpha Thorne. The Alpha nodded with a deep frown on his face. “Tell us, Rain, what were you doing in Dhrel’s room?" He asked. The question hung in the air, heavy and accusatory. I couldn’t bear it any longer, “I don’t know,” I confessed with a voice that was barely above a whisper. “I woke up there, and there was blood, and a weapon…” Alpha Thorne and the council members exchanged skeptical glances. It was clear that they didn't believe me. “And where is Dhrel’s body?” Alpha Thorne demanded. His question cut through the tension like a blade. “I don’t have it!” I exclaimed. “I don’t know what happened to him. I don't even know how I got there. I only woke up and found myself in the room" The alpha looked down at my blood stained hands, "You seem like a foolish liar. You have been caught, already. Why don't you admit it?" "Alpha Thorne!" I cried out, "You have to believe me, please. I don't know how I got there" "She does!" Someone countered. Starr, my supposed best friend who now had a smirk playing at the corner of her lips. Everyone turned to look at her. “She’s lying!” She declared. A hush swept through the crowd. Starr approached me. “She killed Dhrel and has hidden his body, all in a bid to cover up her crime. The guards and I found her right there" Tears welled up in my eyes as I turned to look at Clay. “Clay, please, I beg of you, make them understand that I am innocent. Tell your father, please” I begged, reaching out to him. He recoiled as if my touch burned him. I faced Starr again, "You don't think I killed the Alpha's Son, do you?" Starr remained silent, still smiling. Her eyes shone as she eyed me from a distance. An Elder sprang up, "Alpha Thorne! This young woman is obviously toying with us. If she claims to have no idea of where Dhrel is, what exactly was she doing in his room?" My eyes stung as I looked down at my feet. There was blood on it too. I was so sure that it wasn't my blood because the only place I was bleeding happened to be my head that had been bashed against the wall by one of the guards earlier. Alpha Thorne turned to the elders of the council. They deliberated in silence amongst themselves. Suddenly, the Alpha stood from his throne and held his staff high in the air. Everyone stopped talking abruptly He cleared his throat noisily, "Rain. You murdered my first son. The laws of this great pack do not permit us to forgive any murderer. Seeing that you picked my son as your latest victim—" “I swear! I don’t know where he is, and I never killed anyone”! I shouted at the top of my voice. I didn’t care if that was my last straw of strength, but I had to do something. I had to state how innocent I was. Tears blurred my eyes as I cried. "Will you shut up?!" The Alpha growled. I recoiled and bit hard on my lower lip. "You killed Dhrel, the heir to the Alpha Throne!" "I did not kill your son. I am—" Before I could end my statement, a hand swung through the air and landed with force on my face, making me to stagger backwards. For a moment, I was certain that in had gone blind. The Alpha’s voice broke out, “Rain, daughter of Reeds Rhymestone,” he intoned. Silence fell in the chambers. “You are sentenced to death by hanging for the murder of Dhrel.” He declared.
