22 The deep forest lingered around us for many miles, but gradually the scenery changed. Trees fell away to open fields, and the occasional stone boulder grew into piles and columns of rock that jutted out of the ground like hard, ugly flowers. The road tilted upward slightly and the houses crowded in on one another. Soon the mark of an ancient city appeared: massive cemeteries. They lined both sides of the road and small shrines marked the entrances into the labyrinths of the dead. The lonely road widened into a street and became a thoroughfare for pedestrians and other carts. We passed by all kinds of fashion, from the familiar Victorian dresses to otherworldly magician’s attire. The people usually didn’t pay us any mind until they noticed our driver.
