23 Rodney ducked out of the room before I could ask him how he knew my name. Out of sheer curiosity I followed, though not before I paused in the doorway and cast one last look at the bed. Shade slept soundly, though there was a slight tension in his face I didn’t like. I pursed my lips, but ducked out and walked to the balcony banister. Rodney stood at the bottom of the stairs beside an open doorway that led into the front room. “How’s the i***t?” Blackbeak asked me. “He’s okay,” I answered. “If you would like, there’s some milk in the kitchen,” Rodney invited the crow. Blackbeak eyed him with a sharp look. “Nice of you to offer.” Rodney chuckled. “You needn’t worry about it being poisoned. I’m too fond of milk to ruin the flavor with such spice.
