I’m back
The sound of suitcases sliding across the white marble floor filled the crowd—some wept, some laughed, and some were overjoyed. But only one person smiled, looking at the notice board… A vibration came from his pocket.
"Hello?" "Hey, Bin!why didn't you tell me you were coming back sooner!" A steady voice echoed in Woo-bin's ears.
"Would it have made any difference if I had told her sooner? And you haven't told her yet, have you?"
"Of course not, I know what you're thinking off."
"That's good, thanks a lot ." *Beep beep beep*, the phone hung up. Bright eyes gazed at the deep blue notice board, looking at "Seoul."
"I'm back."
(Park Eun-jae's home)
"Mom, I'm going to work!" A quiet voice echoed in the wooden stairwell, receiving the reply, "Remember to wear a coat!" The unfinished reply was interrupted by the sound of the door closing. The snow-white leather shoes blended seamlessly with the light gray floor tiles, complementing the cherry blossom tree by the entrance. Eun-jae took her car keys from her leather jacket pocket, the headlights flashing like eyes, and she got into the car.
(Choi Woo-bin's perspective)
"Ah, I should have gone to buy balloons or firecrackers." Woo-bin realized this as soon as he got out of the car. Walking on the zebra crossing, he chuckled, imagining Park Eun-jae's startled reaction.
Suddenly, a piercing screech came from an oncoming vehicle, and *thud!* Woo-bin's suitcase fell into the middle of the road. His center of gravity lowered, and he crouched down. His heart pounded rapidly, as if it were about to explode. His slender hands covered his ears, his eyes and brows furrowed, as if the world had stopped turning, revolving around him. "Whoosh—" Now, all Woo-bin could hear were these sounds. Childhood memories flashed through his mind: the sound of breaking ceramics, car horns, and arguments, all blotting out his ears.
"Tsk tsk!" The light turned red, and some drivers grew impatient.
"Get up!" one driver yelled, but Woo-bin paid no attention. Suddenly, a gentle yet rapid voice entered his ears.
"Bin! Choi Woo-bin!" This was the last sound he heard before arriving at the hospital.
"Sir! Can you hear me? What's your name?" The blinding light forced Woo-bin to close his eyes again.
"I…I'm Choi Woo-bin."
"Very good. How old are you?" Now Woo-bin could finally see the doctor looking down at him. "Is this...a hospital?"
"Yes, Mr. Choi. We'll start your IV drip now." Woo-bin quickly realized the situation, silently watching the sharp needle and the tourniquet on his arm as he received treatment, wondering who had called the ambulance for him.
"Could it have been her?" he wondered.
"Doctor, where is the person who called the ambulance for me?"
The doctor thought for a moment and said,
"She seems to have left." Woo-bin paused, then dejectedly lay his head back down.
An hour and a half later, the doctor finished the examination and could leave. Woo-bin, feeling a bit thirsty, went to find a vending machine.
"Hmm...is it over there?"
He walked close to the wall, and as he turned the corner—
"Ah!" He bumped into someone.
"I'm sorry, are you alright?" Before Woo-bin could even look up, he heard a familiar voice.
"Bin-ah!" His heart pounded, not because he felt unwell, but because…
"Park Eun-jae!"
"Hey Choi Woo-bin, you're leaving so soon? Lie back down."
"I haven't seen you in so long, is this how you treat me?" Woo-bin pouted.
"I was planning to surprise you, but it seems it's pointless now."
"You really gave me a fright. I was driving to work just now, and I saw you squatting in the middle of the road…" Woo-bin realized he had made Eun-jae worry about him and felt a little guilty.
"I'm sorry, I'll buy you a strawberry milk as compensation."
"Hmm." Eun-jae responded coldly again.
Two figures of different sizes stood in front of the emergency room.
"Are you going home first?" Eun-jae asked, holding the strawberry milk in her hands. "And besides, I was definitely taller than you until we moved back to Korea for middle school. What makes you so tall now?" Eun-jae glared at Woo-bin, as if she were about to strangle him.
"Take that terrifying look away." Woo-bin pressed Eun-jae's head down with his massive hand. She protested, kicking back, but it didn't seem to do much good. Seeing how pitiful she looked, he chuckled and released her.
"You're going home, right? Get in the car." He said, closing the dimly lit car door.
"What? Trying to follow me?" Woo-bin turned his head to the side, a slight smirk playing on his lips as he looked at Eun-jae. Seeing the childish Woo-bin made Eun-jae feel nauseous. She quickly covered his sculpted face with her tiny hand, pushing him back with a "tsk."
"Sit still." She then stepped on the petal and drove off.
"Aren't you supposed to be at work? Don't you have any patients today? Why are you still able to drive me home?" Eunchae said with a self-satisfied expression,
"To become your savior, I voluntarily sacrificed a day off~" Woobin rolled his eyes, too lazy to argue.
"So, why did you suddenly come back to Korea? Your aunt doesn't know, does she?" Eunjae glanced at Woobin, observing his expression and emotions.
"Her—of course she doesn't know. I don't want to see her, and I especially don't want to talk to her." Woobin looked down at his unconsciously twitching fingers. Eunjae's sudden mention of him seemed to have caught him off guard.
"Then why did you suddenly come back?"
"Well… I guess it's the first step towards facing reality. Also, I've started to miss Korea. After all, it's not just people who disappoint me here." Seeing his eyes brighten again, Eunjae felt relieved.
"We're here. Take your luggage first."
"I'm an ill patient! Can't you help me with this little thing ?" A small fist landed on her stomach; though not very powerful, but it was enough for others to know that Eun-jae had treated her violently.
"If I tell Auntie you hit me now, will you even have dinner tonight?"
"How could you treat your savior like this!"
"Hmm? You get angry so easily?" Woo-bin teased her with a grin. To him, seeing Eun-jae unable to refute him was one of the funniest and most enjoyable things in the world. Eun-jae ignored him and took out her key to open the door. Eun-jae and the others always kept the key for Woo-bin because his so-called "home" was usually empty. In recent years, apart from Woo-bin sometimes staying there when he returned to Korea, no one had ever gone inside. But it was actually right next to Eun-jae's house. The moment the wooden door opened, dust rushed out. Eun-jae tried to clear the air, but it was no use. As Eunjae stepped into the house, she sensed the presence of a non-human creature above her. Feeling uneasy, she looked up and saw…
“Help! Choi Woo-bin!” Woo-bin, hearing the voice, rushed over, inadvertently laughing out loud.
“It’s just a spider, why are you so scared? But I’ve rarely seen you like this, it’s hilarious.”
“Enough talk, hurry up and catch it!” As Eunchae backed away, her back bumped into Woo-bin’s body.
Eunjae thought:
“The heartbeat… is very loud…” Actually, they couldn’t tell whose heartbeat it was, but at that moment, they both began to doubt their relationship.
