CHAPTER 1:IN TO THE WILD
The night stretched on—heavy, suffocating—with the bitter remnant of something unnatural. The scent of blood clung to the forest air like a warning.
Ethan Blackwood stood at the edge of a moonlit clearing, his gaze locked on the horizon that had swallowed everything he loved. He had seen the man—the one with glowing amber eyes and a blood-drenched dagger.
Eira’s blood.
He had been too late.
Now, cradling his son in his arms, Ethan fled into the wild. Behind him lay ruin. Ahead, the unknown. But worse than either was the ancient, brutal force that stalked his every step.
He tightened his grip around the bundle in his arms—his infant son, Auric.
“We can't stay here long,” he murmured, his voice low, taut with pain.
He wasn't speaking to anyone. Just to the shadows. To himself. To the guilt that wrapped around his spine like iron chains.
“I swear on your mother's grave… those responsible will pay.”
He turned suddenly, fury ripping through him as he let out a roar that echoed through the trees.
“They should've come for me!” he bellowed. “Not her! Not my family!”
Silence swallowed the forest again.
His next words came in a hiss, low and deadly. “I am the Alpha King—leader of the Moonlight Pack. And my son… my born Alpha… will rise in my place.”
He looked down at the boy in his arms, finally asleep. Small. Innocent. Unaware of the war he’d been born into.
“We'll learn what we're up against. And when the time is right… we fight.”
***
Dawn never broke—just a pale light filtered behind thick clouds. Ethan rose from where he’d collapsed and pushed deeper into the silver-wooded forest. The trees towered around him like ancient sentinels, silent and watchful.
He walked for days.
Through storms and scorching sun, through hunger and flood. His cloak clung to him, soaked through. Mud sucked at his boots. Thorns tore at his arms. But he never stopped.
By dusk, he found it.
A massive tree rose from the forest’s heart—wide as a fortress, its bark knotted like iron, its roots like sleeping serpents.
“I've never seen anything like it,” he breathed, staring in awe.
He dropped to its base, laying Auric beside him. Exhausted. Starving. Weather-worn.
Then the child's eyes snapped open—glowing a deep, unnatural gold—and he let out a piercing cry.
Ethan moved instinctively, reaching to calm him—but something growled.
A bear. Massive. Snarling. Its eyes wild.
It charged.
Ethan dropped his son and let out a roar of his own.
Bones cracked. Flesh tore. His body twisted as fur burst from the skin. He fell forward, claws gouging the earth.
He wasn't just a man anymore.
He was a werewolf.
The beast inside him moved faster than thought. One swipe—and the bear collapsed, blood pooling on the forest floor.
Ethan panted heavily, then slowly shifted back. His human form dropped to its knees, shaking.
Tears spilled freely.
He had been too late for Eira. He had heard her final scream. He would never forget it.
Auric whimpered.
Ethan crawled over, pulled him close, and pressed his forehead to his son’s.
“I've got you,” he whispered.
He wrapped the boy in his cloak, shielding him from the cold. Then, with trembling hands, he gathered wood and struck a spark.
He roasted the bear’s meat, feeding small bits to Auric with care—like a mother bird to her young.
That night, beneath the ancient tree, surrounded by ghosts and silence, they survived.
***
When morning came, light filtered gently through the leaves.
Ethan opened his eyes—and gasped.
There she was.
“Eira?” he whispered.
She stood before him, bathed in light, smiling. The forest around her seemed to still.
“Stand up, sleepyhead,” she said softly. “Look how beautiful our son is.”
Her voice was like wind.
“Promise me you'll protect him,” she added. “It won't be easy…”
“Why are you saying this? Don't leave me again,” Ethan pleaded, reaching for her.
“I'll always be with you,” she whispered. “Even in the dark.”
“Eira!”
But when he reached her, she vanished.
He woke with a start.
The forest was cold again. Still. Auric lay in his arms, breathing gently. Ethan blinked back tears.
Something felt… different.
Auric was slightly bigger. Stronger. Growing faster than he should.
They moved on, traveling for hours. At last, they reached a large wooden gate wrapped in vines and moss. Strange symbols had been carved into its beam.
Ethan knocked. “Hello? Anyone there?”
He stepped forward.
Snap.
A trap sprung beneath him. A metal cage dropped from the trees, slamming into the ground around him.
Trapped.
Two figures stepped from the forest—a man and a woman, armed and cautious.
“Who are you?” the woman demanded, spear aimed at his chest.
“My name is Ethan Blackwood,” he said, raising his hands.
They froze.
“He's our cousin’s husband,” the man whispered. “Leader of the Moonlight Pack.”
The tension broke.
The woman stepped closer, her eyes flickering with recognition. “Where is our cousin? Why isn't she with you?”
“It's a long story,” Ethan said, his voice shadowed.
“And the Alpha?” the man asked.
“He’s here,” Ethan replied, revealing Auric’s glowing eyes beneath the blanket.
Both stared in silence.
“We have a lot to talk about,” the man murmured.
“But you shouldn't have come,” the woman warned. “It’s not safe here.”
“Release him,” the man said. “He's family. He crossed the world to find us—we won't turn him away.”
The woman hesitated… then nodded.
“We’ll feast together tonight,” she said gently.
