I didn't feel a thing. I had no interest in going out with them anyway.
Not long after, Jack uploaded a photo to i********:.
Elias had his arm wrapped around Vivian, while Jack stood between them, smiling brightly for the camera.
Jack: [I love my mom and dad!]
Without a second thought, I left a like. Just then, my phone rang. It was the nursing home.
"Luna Clara, your mother's condition has taken a critical turn. Please come at once!"
My heart sank instantly. I jumped to my feet and rushed toward the front door. But the magical seal held it firmly shut.
No matter what I did, it wouldn't open. Frantic, I called Elias. Once. Twice. Three times. There was no answer.
With no time left to waste, I ran to the window and leaped down.
The second I landed, my half-healed wounds tore open again, sending sharp pain shooting through me.
Clenching my teeth, I forced myself upright and limped toward the roadside to flag down a car.
But I still arrived too late. The ward was deathly quiet. The doctor looked at me with helpless sympathy.
"My condolences. The patient suffered severe emotional shock and wasn't able to pull through."
I sank to the floor, all hope drained from me.
While sorting through my mother's belongings, I found a voice recorder tucked beneath her pillow.
The moment I pressed play, Vivian's venomous voice echoed through the room.
"Elizabeth, since I almost feel sorry for you, let me tell you the truth. I was never Father's adopted daughter. I'm his biological child. You spent your whole life fighting my mother, only to end up raising her daughter for her. Isn't that pathetic?
"Oh, and those resources you and Clara risked everything to protect? Father signed them over to me the day I came of age. Thanks for guarding them all those years.
"You couldn't beat my mother, and your worthless daughter can't beat me. From now on, her husband, her son, and her inheritance will all belong to me. You two have been nothing but losers to me."
Vegetative patients could still hear. My mother had been tormented to death by that woman, one cruel word at a time. Rage exploded inside me. I tore out of the nursing home and made a beeline for the amusement park.
I spotted the three of them laughing on the grass from afar. Gripping the dagger so tightly that my knuckles turned white, I lunged forward, ready to take Vivian with me.
Elias seized my wrist before I could reach her, his grip like iron. "Clara, what the hell are you doing now?"
People nearby instantly swarmed over, staring and muttering.
Jack threw himself in front of Vivian and yelled, "My mom's mentally unstable! She's been picking on my aunt this whole time!"
"Crazy b***h! Get out of here!"
Jack snatched up a rock and flung it at me. In seconds, the crowd joined in.
"She's probably putting on an act!"
"A woman like that is disgusting! Hit her!"
The insults and contempt came crashing down on me from every direction. Through the sea of faces, I met Elias's eyes as he shielded Vivian behind him.
I curled my lips into a bleak smile. "Elias, if there's another life, I hope I never cross paths with you again."
Then, without hesitation, I lifted the dagger and plunged it straight into my chest.
