Chapter 1 Back to the Villa
I had once been Luna of the Dubois Pack, mated to Alpha Elias Nightshade, and together we had a son, Jack Nightshade.
Five years after I staged my death and vanished, Elias tracked me down, with Jack at his side.
I raised the Wolfsbane Potion and told them I would rather drink poison than return with them.
That was before 8-year-old Jack coldly threatened to kill my bedridden mother if I refused to go back.
Elias stood nearby, his presence oppressive, his voice leaving no room for defiance.
"Clara, make your choice. Your mother can die gasping for air, or you can take your place as Luna again."
My whole body shook with fury, but I had no choice. I lowered the potion, remarried him, and bound myself to him through the mate bond once again.
Stepping into that familiar villa once more, I had learned my lesson. Gone was the woman who cried, argued, and fought for attention five years ago.
Whenever Vivian Blackwood, my adopted sister, felt upset and wanted Elias by her side, I quietly packed my things and moved into a hotel. Even when a brutal allergic reaction landed me in the hospital for three days and nights, I never called Elias once.
When Jack refused to eat and insisted on having Vivian's cooking, I didn't argue. I went myself and brought Vivian home to stay with us.
Even on my birthday, Vivian suddenly lowered her head, her eyes shimmering with tears.
"Clara, I'm so jealous of you. You have an amazing husband and a wonderful son. Unlike me, I've got no one. I don't even have a proper gift."
Without hesitation, I slipped the sapphire necklace from my neck and placed it in her palm.
To my surprise, Elias's eyes instantly turned red in fury. He seized my wrist with such force it felt like the bones might c***k.
"Clara," he hissed through gritted teeth, "I prayed before the Moon Goddess's statue for seven straight days to win that necklace for you!"
The room fell silent.
Flustered, Vivian quickly wrapped her fingers around the necklace and made a move to hand it back.
"I'm sorry, Elias. I had no idea it meant that much to you both. I'll return it to Clara right now."
Beside her, Jack's face darkened with anger as he snapped, "Mom, you knew it was important and still gave it to Vivian on purpose! You just wanted to make Vivian look bad. You're awful!"
Elias pressed a hand to his brow, exhaustion etched across his face.
"Clara, when are you going to let this go? I brought you home because I wanted us to build a life together."
The irony almost made me laugh. Back then, whenever Vivian set her sights on something, even the slightest hesitation on my part came with consequences. Now I had learned to give in without a fight, and somehow that still wasn't enough.
I reached for the wedding ring Elias had just given me and held it out toward Vivian.
"So the sapphire wasn't enough? Fine. You can have this too."
The color drained from Elias's face. In one swift motion, he knocked the birthday cake off the table.
Frosting splashed across my dress as broken pieces of the plate skidded over the floor.
"Clara, do you have to talk like that? Do you have to keep taking digs at me?"
"I'm not."
Elias sank back into his chair and shut his eyes, struggling to rein in his temper.
"I know you've never forgiven me for saving Vivian first back then in the fire. But she had burns over most of her body. She was barely hanging on. All these years, I've been searching for a heart source that matches yours because I never wanted that nightmare to repeat itself. Clara, can you stop fighting me and just live a peaceful life with me?"
I answered with a distracted hum.
Jack slammed his fork onto the table in frustration.
"Dad already said he's sorry. Why are you still giving him the cold shoulder? No wonder nobody in this family likes you except Grandma."
I thought I had grown numb to comments like that. But I was wrong. The familiar pressure still gripped my chest, making it hard to breathe.
After a brief pause, I said, "Perfect. Because aside from your grandmother, I don't like any of you either."
Elias stiffened instantly, his gaze turning icy.
"Fine. Great. Since you don't care about anything or anyone, Vivian and I will have the master bedroom from now on. You can move into the servant's room downstairs."
I didn't bother arguing. I turned around and walked upstairs.
Behind me, Jack burst into excited applause.
"That's awesome! Now I get to sleep with Dad and Vivian every day!"
Back in my room, I quietly started packing.
The vanity was lined with Moonstones in every imaginable shape. The wardrobe overflowed with luxury outfits. Every single one matched my taste, and Elias had bought them all for me.
The scented oil on the dresser had been handcrafted by him, and even the walls had been restored to my favorite sky-blue color.
In the two years since I had returned to the Dubois Pack, he had almost seemed like his old self again, the boy who once saw only me.
My father, now gone, had once served as the Beta of the Dubois Pack. Elias and I had been inseparable since childhood.
At 18, while we were still caught in that hazy space between friendship and love, we learned that we were fated mates. Overjoyed, we wasted no time becoming a couple.
At the Moonlight Ball, Elias asked me for a dance. When the song ended, he kissed me under the silver glow of the moon.
"Clara, I'll spend my life loving you, protecting you, and making sure you're happy."
At that moment, I gazed at him with stars in my eyes, certain he was my forever.
Now, a few tender words no longer had the power to soften my heart.
I packed only a few worn clothes, the same ones I had on when I was dragged back here.
No sooner had I put them into my suitcase than Elias stepped into the room.
He caught my arm, pulled me close, and clasped the sapphire necklace around my neck once more.
"Keep it," he said firmly. "And don't give it away again."
I looked at him in surprise. He had actually gone and taken it back from Vivian?
His eyes swept over my suitcase, and his expression darkened at once. "This is all you're bringing?"
My tone stayed even, "Why would I take things that were never mine?"
Something fierce flickered in his eyes. I had managed to anger him again.
"If that's how you feel, then there's no point keeping any of it. Someone! Take everything I've ever bought for Clara out and burn it. From now on, if she wants to use anything, she gets Vivian's approval first."
I showed no reaction. Gripping my suitcase, I turned and walked out.
The moment I reached the stair landing, a powerful shove struck me from behind.
