Framed Shadows Maya couldn’t sleep. The message on her phone kept repeating in her mind. “Stop asking questions… or you become the next missing one.” She sat on the edge of the bed, staring at the dark room. For the first time… The mansion didn’t feel like luxury. It felt like a cage. Downstairs, Ethan stood in his office again. But this time, he wasn’t alone. Ryan placed a sealed envelope on the table. “We traced the anonymous messages sent to Maya,” he said quietly. Ethan looked up immediately. “And?” Ryan hesitated. “…They were sent through a server linked to Carter Group internal security.” Silence. Ethan’s expression darkened. “That’s impossible.” Ryan shook his head. “I thought so too. But someone inside the system is covering tracks.” Ethan slowly leaned back. “So someone in my company is targeting my wife.” Ryan didn’t correct him. Because they both knew— That was exactly what it looked like. At the same time… Maya was in the kitchen when Margaret approached her quietly. “Mrs. Carter…” Maya looked up. “Yes?” Margaret lowered her voice. “I shouldn’t be saying this…” Maya frowned. “What is it?” A pause. “…I saw someone in your room last night.” Maya froze. “What?” Margaret nodded nervously. “A man. Not Mr. Carter.” Maya’s breath caught. “That’s not possible. I was alone.” Margaret stepped closer. “I know what I saw.” Silence. Cold. Unsettling. Maya’s mind raced. If someone entered her room… Then the threat wasn’t just messages anymore. It was real. Later that night… Ethan returned home earlier than usual. Maya was sitting in the living room, unusually quiet. He noticed immediately. “What happened?” She looked up slowly. “Someone entered my room.” Ethan’s expression changed instantly. “Who?” “I don’t know.” A pause. Then she added softly, “But I think someone is trying to scare me.” Ethan studied her carefully. For a moment, something shifted in his eyes. Protection. Concern. But he hid it quickly. “I’ll handle it,” he said. Maya shook her head. “Why should I believe you?” she asked quietly. That question stopped him. Because it wasn’t anger. It was exhaustion. A long silence passed between them. Then Ethan spoke. “If you’re innocent… I’ll prove it.” Maya looked at him. “And if I’m not?” Ethan didn’t answer immediately. That silence hurt more than words. Far away… Sophia sat in a dim room again, shaking. A newspaper was thrown in front of her. “CARTER GROUP BRIDE STILL MISSING” She whispered, “…Maya…” Tears filled her eyes. “I didn’t mean for you to get dragged into this.” Footsteps approached outside the door. A voice came. “You have one last chance to disappear completely.” Sophia closed her eyes. Because now she understood… Running away wasn’t the escape. It was part of someone else’s plan. The mansion felt different the next morning. Not quieter— but watched. Maya noticed it immediately. Every corner felt like it had eyes. Every silence felt intentional. She tightened her grip on her phone as she walked down the hallway. In the kitchen, Margaret was arranging breakfast again. But today, she looked uneasy. “Good morning, Mrs. Carter,” she said carefully. Maya nodded. “Has anyone new been assigned to the house recently?” Margaret paused for half a second too long. “…No, ma’am.” That pause was enough. Maya didn’t push further, but her instincts sharpened. Something wasn’t right. At Carter Group Headquarters… Ethan stood in front of a digital security screen. Rows of access logs filled the monitor. Ryan pointed at a highlighted entry. “This is the internal login used to send the threat messages,” he said. Ethan narrowed his eyes. “Who accessed it?” Ryan hesitated. “That’s the problem.” He tapped the screen. “The login credentials belong to your personal authorization profile.” Silence. Ethan slowly turned. “You’re saying someone used my identity.” Ryan nodded. “Or someone cloned it.” A heavy pause filled the room. Ethan’s jaw tightened. “Lock every internal system,” he ordered. “No one moves data without my approval.” Ryan nodded quickly and left. But Ethan stayed behind. Staring at the screen. For the first time… He felt something unfamiliar. Not anger. Not control. Uncertainty. Back at the mansion… Maya was walking toward her room when she noticed something odd. Her door was slightly open. She clearly remembered closing it. Her heartbeat slowed. Carefully, she pushed it open fully. Nothing looked disturbed. But something felt wrong. She stepped inside. And froze. On her bed— A small white envelope. Her name written on it. No sender. No stamp. Just: “YOU WERE NEVER THE ORIGINAL BRIDE.” Maya’s breath caught. Her fingers trembled as she picked it up. Slowly, she opened it. Inside was a single photograph. It was her. But not recently. It was from years ago. Standing beside someone she didn’t recognize. Someone wearing a Carter Group badge. Her mind went blank. “No…” she whispered. “This doesn’t make sense.” That evening… Ethan returned home earlier than usual again. He found Maya sitting exactly where he had left her last time. Same position. Same silence. But her eyes were different. Lost. “What happened?” he asked immediately. Maya didn’t speak. Instead, she handed him the envelope. Ethan opened it slowly. His expression changed as he saw the photo. “Where did you get this?” he asked sharply. “In my room,” she replied. His eyes darkened. “No one enters that room without clearance.” Maya looked at him. “That’s what I thought too.” A pause. Then she asked quietly, “Ethan… was I chosen for this marriage?” Silence. That question hit deeper than either of them expected. Ethan didn’t answer immediately. And that silence… Was enough of an answer for her. Far away… Sophia sat in a moving vehicle. This time, she wasn’t alone. A man across from her spoke calmly. “You think telling the truth will save your sister?” Sophia looked up sharply. “She doesn’t deserve any of this.” The man smirked. “She was always part of it.” Sophia shook her head. “No… Maya doesn’t know anything.” The man leaned back. “That’s the problem.” Back at the mansion… Ethan stood outside Maya’s room long after she left. The envelope was still in his hand. Ryan’s words echoed in his mind. “Cloned identity.” “Internal access.” And now this: “You were never the original bride.” For the first time… Ethan Carter didn’t feel in control of his own world. And inside her room… Maya whispered into the darkness: “If I was never meant to be here…” “…then who am I to them?”
