Closer Than Ever
The drive back to the Carter mansion was silent.
Rain tapped softly against the windows of the SUV.
Maya sat beside Ethan, replaying everything that had happened at the warehouse.
Sophia was alive.
Someone inside Carter Group was a traitor.
And now...
Maya had become a target.
Ethan kept both hands on the steering wheel, but his mind was elsewhere.
The phone call echoed in his head.
If you want her to stay alive... stop looking for me.
He stole a glance at Maya.
She was staring out the window, unaware of how tightly he was gripping the wheel.
When they arrived at the mansion, Ryan was already waiting.
"I've doubled the security," he reported.
"No one gets in or out without my approval."
Ethan nodded.
"Good."
Ryan hesitated before looking at Maya.
"Miss Maya, please don't go anywhere alone."
She smiled reassuringly.
"I won't."
After Ryan left, Ethan turned to her.
"We need to talk."
She followed him into the library.
The room was quiet, with only the crackling fireplace breaking the silence.
Ethan faced her.
"You should leave the mansion."
Maya blinked.
"What?"
"I can arrange a safe place for you."
"You'll have guards. No one will know where you are."
She shook her head immediately.
"So you can face this alone?"
"I'll be safer if I'm not worried about you."
She stepped closer.
"You don't get to decide that for me."
His jaw tightened.
"Maya—"
"No."
Her voice was calm but firm.
"When I first came here, I wanted nothing more than to leave."
She smiled sadly.
"But now..."
"My place is here."
"With you."
The words caught Ethan off guard.
He looked into her eyes and saw no fear.
Only honesty.
Slowly, he reached for her hand.
"I don't know when it happened."
"But somewhere along the way..."
"You became the person I think about every morning."
"And the last person I think about every night."
Maya's heart skipped a beat.
"Ethan..."
He gently cupped her face.
"I've tried to keep my distance."
"I told myself it was to protect you."
"But the truth is..."
"I've already fallen for you."
Tears filled Maya's eyes.
A smile trembled on her lips.
"I thought I was the only one."
She wrapped her arms around him.
This time, Ethan didn't hesitate.
He pulled her close.
Their foreheads touched.
"I don't want to lose you," he whispered.
"You won't."
She looked up at him.
"I promise."
Very slowly, Ethan leaned in.
Maya closed her eyes.
Their lips finally met.
It was a soft, tender kiss.
Not rushed.
Not driven by passion alone.
It was a promise.
A promise of trust.
Of hope.
Of something neither of them could deny anymore.
When they finally pulled apart, Maya rested her head against his chest.
His heartbeat was calm.
Steady.
Just like the night she had first found comfort in his arms.
Neither of them noticed the figure watching from outside the library window.
Hidden in the darkness, Victor Hayes lowered his binoculars.
A cold smile spread across his face.
He pressed a button on his phone.
"They've fallen in love," he said.
A woman's voice answered from the other end.
"Good."
"They're exactly where we want them."
The call ended.
Victor disappeared into the shadows.
Unaware that the greatest danger to Ethan and Maya's love had only just begun.
