A Heart Under Siege
The next morning, the Carter mansion was unusually quiet.
Sunlight streamed through the tall windows, but it did little to chase away the unease that lingered in the air.
Maya woke with a smile she couldn't hide.
The memory of Ethan's kiss replayed in her mind.
She touched her lips gently.
It had been real.
Not a dream.
A soft knock sounded on her door.
"Come in."
Margaret entered carrying a breakfast tray.
One look at Maya's face made her smile knowingly.
"You seem happier today."
Maya blushed.
"Is it that obvious?"
"My dear," Margaret chuckled, "I've worked in this house for over thirty years. I know what love looks like."
Maya lowered her gaze, smiling shyly.
Before she could reply, another knock interrupted them.
Ryan stood at the door.
His expression was serious.
"Mr. Carter wants everyone in the conference room."
Minutes later, Maya joined Ethan, Ryan, and the head of security.
A large map of New York City was displayed on the screen.
Ryan spoke first.
"Our team reviewed the evidence from the warehouse."
"We traced Victor Hayes to three possible locations."
Ethan folded his arms.
"Any sign of Sophia?"
Ryan shook his head.
"Nothing yet."
The head of security stepped forward.
"But we found something else."
He placed a photograph on the table.
Maya picked it up.
It showed Victor entering a downtown office building.
Walking a few steps behind him...
Was a man wearing a black suit.
His face was partially hidden by a cap.
Ethan narrowed his eyes.
"Can we identify him?"
"Not yet."
"But we believe he's the one coordinating Victor's movements."
Maya looked closely at the picture.
"Zoom in."
Ryan enlarged the image.
A silver ring was visible on the man's right hand.
Engraved on it was the Carter family crest.
The room fell silent.
Ethan's voice was low.
"He's one of us."
Before anyone could speak again, a security guard rushed into the room.
"Sir!"
"What is it?"
"A delivery just arrived."
"We didn't order anything."
The guard placed a black gift box on the table.
No sender.
No address.
Only one word written across the lid.
MAYA.
Ethan's expression hardened.
"No one touch it."
The bomb squad was called immediately.
After several tense minutes, the box was declared safe.
Ryan carefully lifted the lid.
Inside was a single white rose.
Beneath it lay a folded note.
Maya unfolded it with trembling hands.
The message was short.
You stole something that belongs to me.
There was no signature.
Only a lipstick mark at the bottom of the page.
Maya looked at Ethan.
"Who sent this?"
Before he could answer, his phone buzzed.
A new message had arrived from an unknown number.
It contained only a photograph.
Ethan's blood ran cold.
The picture had been taken just moments ago.
It showed Maya...
Standing in the conference room.
Someone was watching them.
From inside the mansion.
