The Traitor's Shadow
A heavy silence settled over the conference room.
Ethan stared at the photograph on his phone.
It had been taken only moments earlier.
The angle was impossible.
Whoever took it...
Was inside the Carter mansion.
Ryan's expression darkened.
"Lock down the estate."
Within seconds, alarms echoed through the mansion.
Steel security doors slid into place.
No one could enter.
No one could leave.
The head of security spoke into his radio.
"Search every room. Check every camera. I want a full report."
"Yes, sir."
Maya looked around uneasily.
"So the traitor has been here all along?"
Ethan slipped his phone into his pocket.
"It seems that way."
His gaze swept across the room.
Every employee.
Every guard.
Every familiar face.
For the first time, he wondered...
Who could he still trust?
An hour later...
Ryan entered the security control room carrying a tablet.
"We've checked every camera."
"And?"
"There was a two-minute blackout in the internal security system."
Ethan frowned.
"Just like the night Victor escaped."
Ryan nodded.
"Someone disabled the cameras from inside the mansion."
Maya's heart sank.
"They knew exactly where the blind spots were."
Ethan looked at Ryan.
"Only a handful of people have access to that system."
Ryan didn't need to answer.
They were all trusted employees.
Later that evening...
Maya stepped onto the balcony outside her room, hoping the cool breeze would calm her thoughts.
She heard footsteps behind her.
She turned.
It was Ethan.
"You shouldn't be out here alone," he said gently.
She smiled.
"I needed some air."
He walked beside her.
For a few moments, neither of them spoke.
Finally, Maya broke the silence.
"Do you regret it?"
He looked at her.
"Our kiss."
A faint smile touched his lips.
"Not for a second."
Her cheeks warmed.
"I was hoping you'd say that."
Ethan reached for her hand.
"I meant what I said."
"I'm done pretending I don't love you."
Maya's eyes shimmered.
"I love you too."
This time, there was no interruption.
He pulled her into his arms and kissed her again.
Longer.
Warmer.
Full of the emotions they had both tried to hide.
When they finally separated, Ethan rested his forehead against hers.
"I'll protect you."
She smiled softly.
"And I'll stand beside you."
Neither of them noticed the tiny camera hidden inside a flowerpot on the balcony.
A red light blinked once.
Miles away...
Victor Hayes watched the live video feed on a laptop.
Sophia Bennett stood beside him.
"So," she said quietly.
"They're finally in love."
Victor smiled.
"Exactly as planned."
Sophia's expression remained unreadable.
"The closer they become..."
"The harder the fall."
Victor closed the laptop.
"It's time for the next move."
He picked up a folder marked:
PROJECT PHOENIX
Inside...
Was Maya's photograph.
Alongside a document that revealed a shocking truth.
Maya's past was connected to Carter Group long before she had ever met Ethan.
