chapter twelve

Too Close to Hide Maya didn’t notice Ethan standing in the doorway at first. She was curled up on the sofa in the dim living room, the envelope still resting beside her like a wound she didn’t know how to close. When she finally looked up, their eyes met. And for a second… Neither of them spoke. The silence wasn’t heavy tonight. It was different. Fragile. Ethan stepped inside slowly. “You didn’t sleep,” he said. It wasn’t a question. Maya looked away. “Sleep feels… useless lately.” He stopped a few steps away from her. Too close to be distant. Too far to be comfort. That distance between them had become a habit. “I read it,” he said quietly. She nodded. “I figured you would.” Another pause. Then she whispered, “Do you believe it?” Ethan didn’t answer immediately. That hesitation made her chest tighten. He exhaled slowly. “I believe you’re here,” he said finally. Maya looked up at him. “That’s not an answer.” His eyes softened slightly. “It’s the only one I have right now.” A silence followed. But this one didn’t feel cold. It felt… personal. Like something unspoken was standing between them. Maya stood slowly. “You know what hurts the most?” she asked softly. Ethan watched her carefully. “What?” She met his eyes. “That I came into this marriage thinking I was just replacing someone…” Her voice trembled slightly. “…but now I feel like I don’t even belong in my own life.” Ethan’s expression changed instantly. Something in him shifted. He took a step closer. “You belong here,” he said firmly. Maya gave a faint, bitter smile. “You don’t even know who I am.” “That’s not true.” Her breath caught. He was closer now. Close enough that she could feel his presence properly for the first time. “I know you’re the only person in this house who looks at me like I’m not a monster,” he added quietly. Maya froze. That wasn’t what she expected. Not at all. A long pause. Then she whispered, “Do you think I’m dangerous too?” Ethan stared at her for a moment. Then shook his head slightly. “No.” One word. Certain. Simple. It hit her harder than she expected. Maya laughed softly, but there was no humor in it. “You should be careful saying things like that,” she said. “Why?” Her eyes lifted slowly. “Because I might start believing you.” That sentence changed something in the air between them. Ethan didn’t move away. Instead, he looked at her like he was finally seeing something clearly. Something he had been avoiding. “I don’t like this distance between us,” he said suddenly. Maya blinked. “…What?” He exhaled. “It’s starting to feel unnecessary.” Her heart skipped slightly. “Unnecessary?” He stepped closer again. Now there was barely any space left. “I don’t trust the world right now,” he said quietly. “But I trust you more than I should.” Maya’s breath caught. That was dangerous. Not because it was suspicious. But because it was honest. “Ethan…” she whispered. He looked down at her. “Yes?” Her voice softened. “If this is all a mistake…” She stopped. He didn’t interrupt her. Just waited. Maya swallowed. “Why does it feel like I can’t walk away from you?” Silence. That one question stayed between them longer than any argument ever had. Ethan lifted his hand slightly—but stopped before touching her. Like he was afraid she might disappear if he did. “I don’t know what this is,” he said quietly. “But I know I don’t want you to be far from me.” Maya’s eyes trembled slightly. “You don’t even know me.” “I’m trying.” That was all he said. But it was enough. Outside, thunder rolled faintly across the sky. Inside, the space between them finally broke. Not into conflict. But into something far more dangerous. Closeness. Maya took a small step forward. Ethan didn’t move away. Neither did he close the distance fully. But he didn’t need to. Because for the first time… They were both choosing to stay in the same space. A quiet breath passed between them. Then Ethan spoke softly: “Stay here tonight.” Maya looked up quickly. “…What?” He hesitated for a second. “Not in separate rooms.” A pause. Then he added, almost reluctantly: “Just… stay where I can see you.” Maya’s heartbeat slowed. That wasn’t an order. It wasn’t control. It was fear. She looked at him for a long moment. Then, very quietly, she nodded. “…Okay.” And for the first time since the wedding… Neither of them walked away.
