Lines You Shouldn’t Cross The moment the Bennett family left, the house felt louder. Not with sound. With tension. Maya stood still in the middle of the living room long after the door closed behind them. Ethan didn’t move either. He was watching her. Waiting. “You should sit down,” he said quietly. Maya shook her head. “If I sit down right now, I think I’ll fall apart.” A pause. Then Ethan stepped closer. Not rushing. Just steady. “Then don’t sit,” he said. “Stay standing. But stay with me.” That sentence made her look at him. “…With you?” Ethan nodded slightly. “Yes.” Maya let out a slow breath. “You make it sound like I don’t have a choice.” His eyes softened a fraction. “You always have a choice.” A pause. “But I don’t want you choosing alone right now.” Silence. It wasn’t empty anymore. It was emotional. Dense. Maya finally sat down on the armrest of the sofa, exhausted. “I feel like everything is closing in,” she whispered. Ethan didn’t respond immediately. Then he sat—not beside her exactly, but close enough that she could feel his presence clearly. “I know,” he said quietly. A long pause followed. Then Maya spoke again. “Do you think I did something wrong?” Ethan turned to her instantly. “No.” No hesitation. No doubt. Just certainty. Maya gave a faint, broken laugh. “You don’t even know everything about me.” Ethan’s voice lowered. “I know enough.” That made her pause. “…Enough for what?” He looked at her for a moment. Then said softly: “Enough to know you don’t look at people like they’re tools.” Silence. That hit deeper than she expected. Maya turned slightly away. “Everyone keeps saying my name is connected to Sophia.” Ethan didn’t interrupt. She continued. “But I don’t even know what I’m connected to anymore.” Her voice cracked slightly. “I feel like I’m living inside someone else’s life.” Ethan shifted closer. Not touching her yet. But close. “Then we find the truth,” he said. Maya looked at him. “It’s not that simple.” “It never is,” he replied. A pause. Then quieter: “But I’m not letting you face it alone.” That line hung in the air. Heavy. Protective. Dangerously intimate. Maya looked at him carefully. “Why are you doing this?” Ethan didn’t answer immediately. For once, he seemed unsure how to put it into words. Then— “Because when they said your name,” he said quietly, “I didn’t feel curious.” He paused. “I felt angry.” Maya blinked slightly. “…Angry?” He nodded. “Yes.” Another pause. “And that’s new for me.” Something shifted again. Not loudly. But deeply. Maya stood slowly. “I don’t like that I’m affecting you like this,” she said softly. Ethan stood too. Now they were face to face again. “You’re not affecting me,” he said. A pause. Then corrected himself: “You are… but not in a way I can control.” Maya swallowed slightly. “That sounds dangerous.” Ethan gave a faint, almost tired smile. “It is.” A silence stretched between them. Then suddenly— Ethan’s phone vibrated. He glanced at it. His expression changed instantly. Ryan’s message. Short. Urgent. “We found the negotiation recording. You need to hear this.” Ethan looked at Maya. Something in his eyes shifted. “I have to go,” he said. Maya nodded slowly. “Okay.” But she hesitated. “…Ethan.” He stopped. “Yes?” Her voice softened. “Come back.” That wasn’t a demand. It was something quieter. More vulnerable. Ethan held her gaze for a moment longer than usual. Then nodded once. “I will.” And left. Maya stayed standing long after he was gone. Because for the first time… She wasn’t afraid of the mystery. She was afraid of how much she wanted him to come back.
