The Impossible Decision
The bridal suite fell silent.
Maya stared at the letter in her trembling hands.
Her vision blurred as tears filled her eyes.
"No..."
"This can't be happening."
Sophia had disappeared.
On her wedding day.
Mrs. Bennett collapsed into a nearby chair, crying uncontrollably.
"What are we going to do?"
"How could she leave us like this?"
Mr. Bennett rushed into the room after hearing the commotion.
"What happened?"
Maya silently handed him the letter.
As he read it, his face turned pale.
For several moments, he said nothing.
Then, in one swift movement, he crumpled the letter in his fist.
"This wedding cannot be canceled."
Maya looked at him in disbelief.
"Dad..."
"Sophia is missing!"
"We have to find her."
Mr. Bennett rubbed his forehead.
"The Carter family has invited the most powerful people in the country."
"If this wedding is canceled..."
"Our family will be ruined."
"Our company will collapse."
Moments later, the wedding planner burst into the room.
"Mr. Bennett..."
"Mr. Ethan Carter is asking to see the bride."
Mrs. Bennett wiped her tears.
"What do we tell him?"
No one answered.
Outside, the wedding music continued to play.
Inside...
Panic grew with every passing second.
---
At the altar...
Ethan Carter checked his watch again.
Twenty-five minutes late.
His best friend, Ryan, leaned closer.
"You don't look surprised."
Ethan gave a cold smile.
"I've learned that people are rarely on time."
Ryan chuckled.
"What if the bride ran away?"
Ethan looked toward the grand staircase.
"Then she should have told me before inviting five hundred guests."
His voice remained calm.
But beneath that calm...
He was angry.
Very angry.
---
Back upstairs...
Mr. Bennett paced across the room.
His breathing became heavier.
Then...
He suddenly stopped.
His eyes slowly turned toward Maya.
"No."
She whispered.
Her father didn't answer.
"No."
She repeated.
"You can't be thinking that."
Mrs. Bennett looked between them.
Then realization dawned on her face.
Her eyes widened.
"You mean..."
Mr. Bennett nodded.
"They're identical twins."
Maya took several steps backward.
"No."
"I won't do it."
Her father walked closer.
"Listen to me."
"It's only for today."
"We'll explain everything afterward."
"You'll save this family."
Maya shook her head again.
"This is wrong."
"It's lying."
"It's illegal."
"It's someone else's life."
Mrs. Bennett held Maya's hands tightly.
"Please."
"I'm begging you."
"If this wedding is canceled..."
"We'll lose everything."
Maya's heart ached.
She had never seen her parents so desperate.
"But..."
"What about Ethan?"
"He deserves the truth."
Mr. Bennett closed his eyes.
"I know."
"But if we tell him now..."
"He'll walk away."
"And the Carter family will destroy us."
Silence.
The weight of the decision crushed Maya.
She loved her family.
But this...
This felt impossible.
---
Downstairs...
Guests had begun whispering louder.
"Is something wrong?"
"Why hasn't the ceremony started?"
"Did the bride change her mind?"
Ethan heard every word.
His patience was running out.
He looked at the wedding coordinator.
"You have two minutes."
"If my bride doesn't appear..."
"I'm leaving."
The coordinator hurried upstairs in panic.
---
Inside the bridal suite...
Mrs. Bennett opened Sophia's wardrobe.
She carefully removed the wedding dress.
Holding it out to Maya.
"Please."
Maya stared at the dress.
It suddenly felt impossibly heavy.
She imagined standing at the altar.
Looking into the eyes of a man she had met only a few times.
Taking vows that weren't meant for her.
Her conscience screamed at her to refuse.
But then she looked at her mother.
Crying.
Her father.
Broken.
Their entire future seemed to rest on her answer.
A single tear slid down her cheek.
She whispered,
"If I do this..."
"It won't be because I wanted to."
Her mother embraced her tightly.
"Thank you."
"I'm so sorry."
The wedding planner quickly began adjusting the dress.
Fixing the veil.
Touching up Maya's makeup.
Within minutes...
The reflection staring back from the mirror was no longer Maya.
It was Sophia.
Or at least...
It looked like Sophia.
---
Downstairs...
The music began once again.
The grand doors slowly opened.
Every guest rose to their feet.
Ethan lifted his eyes toward the entrance.
The bride had finally arrived.
He had no idea...
That the woman walking toward him...
Wasn't the one he was supposed to marry.
