CHAPTER 27 DOMENICO I slammed the door behind me, the echo sharp like a gunshot. Matteo stood stiffly in the hall. “Where is she?” I asked. He didn’t answer right away. I walked toward him, jaw clenched. “I asked you a question.” He exhaled. “Her room.” “She disobeyed direct orders.” Matteo’s eyes flicked toward the stairs. “She handled it.” “I didn’t ask if she handled it, Matteo. I asked if she followed orders.” He looked down. I climbed the stairs without another word. The rage in my chest burned hot and clean. She was standing by the window when I opened the door. “Did you think I wouldn’t find out?” I snapped. Maureen didn’t flinch. “I assumed you would.” I stalked closer. “Who gave you the authority to interrogate my men? To shoot someone?” “No one,” she said evenly
