CHAPTER 28 DOMENICO The door to Matteo’s room creaked open. He was on his phone, back to me, pacing. He stiffened the moment he sensed my presence. “I need a name,” I said. My voice was low. Even. Matteo ended the call. “You’re back earlier than expected.” I stepped inside. “Where is the last one? The man we pulled from the docks.” Matteo hesitated. “He’s in the cellar beneath the Catania warehouse. We kept him alive, just like you said.” “Good. Prepare a car.” He didn’t ask why. He just nodded and followed me out. The car ride was silent. Matteo drove. I stared out the window, watching the city blur into shadows. She was right, in a way. Maureen. The cellar beneath the Catania hideout was colder than I remembered. Damp. Bare concrete. No soundproofing because no one survived
