CHAPTER 1
Caitlyn’s p.o.v I find it incredibly frustrating. Whenever I listen to our class discussions, I am completely lost. Nothing makes sense to me, whether it is before, during, or after the discussion. "What the hell, Mr... what's your name again, stupid boy?" I stop thinking whenever I hear Sir Samonte's angry voice. That's Sir Samonte— always furious, hot-headed, short-tempered, and unwilling to concede. His co-teachers rarely approach him due to his unpleasant demeanor. I have heard rumors that Sir Samonte lost his wife, but I am not sure if that is true. Sir Samonte reprimanded our classmate Hendrich, who is also a troublemaker like our class joker. “Rich, Sir," Hendrich replied hesitantly. He took a few seconds to respond, seemingly having forgotten his own last name. "If you are not going to listen in my class, then you are free to drop from my class! My question is simple, yet you cannot even answer it! How difficult is it to state your own name?" Sir Samonte's loud voice nearly burst my eardrums. He glared at Hendrich's seatmate, Din, our class joker. "You! Stand up!" Din had no choice but to rise. "What is the square root of 50,625?" Sir Samonte's angry question left Din looking puzzled. I adjusted my seat as Din glanced at me. "What is your answer?" Din's voice was barely audible, and he tilted his head slightly as he held his mouth. Sir Samonte's gaze turned to me due to Din's actions. "You! Stand up!" He pointed at me, and my heart began racing. "Is 50,625 a perfect square?" Sir Samonte's sarcastic question made him appear ready to pounce. "You!" He glared at me, making my face burn. "Does 50,625 form a perfect square?" He repeated his question in an even angrier tone. Why did I get involved? I am sure I will be in trouble if I answer incorrectly. Sir Samonte started to speak, but I did not let him finish. I imagined slapping him in my mind due to annoyance. What is a perfect square, anyway? I do not know. But I will answer; I have no choice. "Yes," I replied weakly. Sir Samonte began pacing, holding his chin. "Hmm, okay, that's right." He commented, calming down slightly. "So, what is the square root of 50,625?" His question renewed my anxiety. I do not know! What should I say? I stood there for a few seconds before responding weakly "I do not know." "Stupid students! You three, stand up! You are all idiots! I thought women were smarter than men, but I guess not!" Sir Samonte's angry shout made me shiver. He slammed his hand on a desk, making our classmate jump. He walked to the front of the class, grabbed a whiteboard marker, and shouted. "Bring out one whole sheet of paper! Now!" As he started writing on the board, the classroom door suddenly opened. Yumeko stood there. Sir Samonte stopped and faced Yumeko. "You are really something else! Not only are the students in this section stupid, but also the parents!" He shouted again, throwing the whiteboard marker. That is enough, Sir! He should not speak like that. "Dumb," Yumeko commented, making everyone stop. "What do you mean by 'dumb'?" Sir Samonte shouted. "You. You are dumb," Yumeko replied sarcastically in a calm tone. "You think I am dumb? You dare to call me stupid? I am your teacher!" Sir Samonte was furious, his voice shaking with rage. "There is a lot of talk," Yumeko cut him off. Sir Samonte calmed down slightly. "Okay, fine. You think you are smart? Answer my question and prove it! You have the nerve to call me stupid? I am your teacher!" Sir Samonte was still fuming, his eyes blazing with anger. "A lot of nonsense," Yumeko interrupted again. Sir Samonte regained his composure. "Okay, fine, you're excited to be humiliated," Sir Samonte sneered. "Make sure you'll be able to answer my question, and if you're as stupid as your classmates, then all of you should drop my subject!" The fear returned to my chest! This teacher of ours is really something else - so heartless! But I know Yumeko will be able to answer. I just know! "Does 50,625 a perfect square?" "Of course, it is," Yumeko replied. Sir Samonte's hand returned to his chin. "So, what is the square root of 50,625?" he asked again. "225," Yumeko answered briefly, smiling at Sir Samonte. "Why?" Sir Samonte asked again. "Because when you raise it to itself, you'll get 50,625," Yumeko replied in a bored tone, slightly sitting down in her seat, which was right in front and near the door. "Good." "But..." Sir Samonte cut himself off. "Stand up, I'm not done asking you." Yumeko calmly stood up, her bored eyes fixed on Sir Samonte. "What is 50,625 squared?" he asked. Yumeko answered in less than five seconds, which made Sir Samonte smile. "2,562,890,625," Yumeko replied, leaving their classmates and even the teacher in awe. "What's 7896 squared?" Sir Samonte asked immediately after, and Yumeko quickly replied, "62,346,816." I forgot to introduce Yumeko to you. She's Dolce Yumeko Mavis, our class president and top student. We've been classmates since last school year, and this year, nothing has changed— no one transferred to a different section or school. Yumeko is incredibly intelligent, and her grades are almost always perfect. Luckily for Sir Samonte, he found someone who could match him, thanks to Yumeko's absence yesterday, which was the first day of school. But as intelligent as Yumeko is, she's also very quiet. I've never even seen her smile! "Take your seat," Sir Samonte said with a smile. What's going on? Is he in a good mood? Well, it's Yumeko, after all... All the teachers adore her intelligence. A few more minutes passed, and Sir Samonte's class ended. He only asked Yumeko questions throughout the lesson, and he even complimented her, which was a stark contrast to his behavior earlier, when he was furious and almost killed us with his anger. He didn't even continue asking us questions. And thanks to Yumeko.
