Chapter 1_ The Signature
The elevator opens on the forty-second floor, and I step out into the executive wing of Sterling Global. "Good morning, Ms. Sterling." Claire looks up from her desk, phone pressed to her ear. She covers the receiver. "Your father wants the quarterly reports before noon." "Tell him he'll have them by eleven." I walk past her, through the glass doors, into my office. The city stretches behind my windows—gray towers, a pale sky, traffic moving like slow water on the streets below. I set down my bag and opened my laptop. The financial report loads. I've reviewed these numbers every quarter since I was sixteen, sitting beside my father at the dining table while he explained assets and liabilities, profit margins and hidden costs. I know what normal looks like. I scroll through the rows. Assets. Liabilities. Transfers. I stop. Row 47. Four million dollars. Moved from the Sterling family account into a trust called Blackwood Holdings. I've never heard of Blackwood Holdings. I lean closer. The authorization code bears my electronic signature. My personal encryption key. The one only I can access. My coffee sits untouched. My heart beats a little faster. I press the intercom. "Claire, can you pull the supporting documentation for the March transfers? Account 7741." "Of course, Ms. Sterling. Give me a moment." I wait. The numbers don't change. Four million dollars. Gone. Moved into a trust that exists only on paper. Claire's voice crackles through the speaker. "Ms. Sterling, I'm trying to access the file, but it's restricted." "Restricted how?" "Level four clearance. Executive access only." Level four. That means Alexander. Richard. Or me. I didn't authorize this. "Thank you, Claire." I close the report and open my calendar. March 14th. The day the transfer was recorded. I remember that night. The Children's Foundation gala. Across town. Three hundred people watched me accept an award on that stage. I shook hands with the mayor. I smiled for photographers. I gave a speech about legacy and responsibility. The transfer was recorded at 8:47 PM. At 8:47 PM, I was twenty blocks away, surrounded by witnesses. Someone used my signature. Someone has my key. Someone is stealing from my family—and they're using my name to do it. I close the laptop. My hands are steady. But something cold moves through my chest. The office is silent. The city hums beyond the glass, indifferent and vast. I pick up my phone and scroll to Alexander's number. My thumb hovers over the call button. Then I stop. I set the phone down. I stare at the Manhattan skyline and think about the trust I've never heard of, the signature I never gave, and the person who knows me well enough to steal my identity. Four million dollars is nothing compared to what this could mean. I don't call Alexander. Not yet. First, I need to understand what I'm dealing with. I pull up the transfer records again and start reading. --- The door opens without a knock. "Victoria." I look up. Alexander stands in the doorway, dressed in a dark suit, his hair still wet from the rain outside. He smiles—that easy, practiced smile that once made me feel safe. "You're early," I say. "Meeting with your father. He wants to discuss the Atlantic acquisition." He steps inside, closing the door behind him. "You look serious. What's wrong?" I study his face. The sharp jaw. The calm eyes. The husband who kissed me goodbye this morning and told me to have a good day. "Nothing," I say. "Just reviewing the quarterly numbers." "Anything interesting?" I pause. "Not yet." He walks toward my desk, hands in his pockets. "Your father mentioned the family account showed some activity last month. He wanted me to ask you about it." My pulse quickens. "Did he?" "Yes. He said there was a transfer he didn't recognize. Four million, I think." Alexander tilts his head. "You didn't mention it." "I just found it." "And?" I hold his gaze. "And I'm looking into it." He nods slowly. "Good. Let me know what you find." He turns toward the door, then stops. "Victoria." "Yes?" "Your father is getting older. He worries. If something is wrong with the accounts, he needs to know." "I'll tell him when I have answers." Alexander smiles again. "That's all I ask." He leaves. The door clicks shut behind him. I exhale. My hands are still steady, but something has shifted. His questions felt less like concern and more like testing. I open the transfer records again. Blackwood Holdings. Four million dollars. My signature. I need to find out who created this trust. I need to find out who has my key. And I need to find out why Alexander seemed more interested in my investigation than in the theft itself. I reach for my phone. Not Alexander this time. Someone else. Daniel Hayes. Former federal investigator. Disgraced. Fired. But brilliant. I haven't spoken to him in two years. I scroll through my contacts and find his number. Before I can press call, Claire's voice comes through the intercom again. "Ms. Sterling, Mr. Sterling Senior is on line two. He says it's urgent." I set down my phone. Pick up the receiver. "Father." "Victoria." His voice is low, controlled. "I need you to come to my office. Now." "What's this about?" A pause. Then: "The Blackwood trust. I think you've seen it." My blood runs cold. "How do you know about Blackwood?" "Because I created it." The line goes silent. I grip the receiver tighter. "What?" "Come to my office. We need to talk before anyone else finds out." He hangs up. I sit frozen, the dial tone buzzing in my ear. My father created the trust. My father moved the money. My father used my signature. Or someone did. I stand. Grab my bag. Walk toward the door. Claire looks up as I pass. "Ms. Sterling? Everything okay?" I don't answer. The elevator doors close behind me. I have questions. My father has answers. And someone in this building is lying. --- The elevator descends. I watch the numbers drop—42, 41, 40—and think about the transfer. The restricted file. The signature I never gave. My father created Blackwood Holdings. But he didn't create it alone. Someone helped him. Someone with access to my encryption key. The elevator stops on the thirty-eighth floor. The doors open. Richard Sterling stands in the hallway, waiting. "Victoria." His voice is calm. His eyes are not. "We need to talk about what you found." I step out of the elevator. "I'm listening." "Not here." He gestures toward his office. "Inside." I follow him. The door closes behind us. Richard walks to his desk, then turns to face me. "The Blackwood trust is not what you think." "Then what is it?" He studies me for a long moment. "It's a legacy account. Created years ago. Before you were born." "By who?" "By your grandfather. And your mother." I feel the floor shift beneath me. "My mother?" Richard nods slowly. "There are things about your mother you don't know. Things I've kept from you. Things your father wanted to keep hidden." My throat tightens. "What things?" He opens a drawer. Pulls out a folder. Sets it on the desk between us. "The transfer you found—it wasn't theft. It was a withdrawal. Authorized by your mother's trust. Accessed using a key that was created for you before you were born." I stare at the folder. My name is written across the top in faded ink. "Who accessed it?" I ask. Richard meets my eyes. "That's what we need to find out." He slides the folder toward me. I open it. The first page is a photograph. A woman I've never seen before. Dark hair. Sharp eyes. A smile that looks like mine. Beneath the photo, a single line of text: Katherine Sterling. Born 1962. Died 1994. My mother. I look up at Richard. "She died when I was four." "Yes." "But this file says—" "I know what it says." His voice hardens. "And that's why we need to talk." I close the folder. My hands are shaking now. Outside the window, Manhattan stretches into the distance, indifferent and cold. Somewhere in this city, someone accessed my mother's trust. Someone used my signature. Someone knows the truth about a woman I barely remember. And my father—the man waiting in his office upstairs—may be the only person who can tell me why. I stand. "Where are you going?" Richard asks. "To see my father." "He won't tell you the truth." I pause at the door. "Then I'll find it myself." I walk out. The hallway stretches before me. The elevator waits. I have a folder full of secrets. A husband who asks too many questions. A father who created a trust in my name. And a mother I never knew. The elevator doors open. I step inside. And the mystery begins.
