Chapter 1-Getting Bearings

1380 Words
*Dragon under Yggdrasil* I woke up feeling much better than I had when I clawed myself out of my earthen bed. I need to know why I was woken up after all this time, the last thing I remember was the great battle that took place between my mother and her family over my very creation. After a long and treacherous war it was agreed that I could stay alive but I could only be awakened when I was needed, my grandfather allowed me to chose my resting place and I settled right by the tree of life Yggdrasil in order to protect its small trunk. Little did I know that the damn thing would end up growing so big that I’d get swallowed up by it’s roots. I sat up and looked around, and what a sight it was, the field that Yggdrasil occupied was vibrant and full of life and the tree itself was massive. It had grown absolutely beautiful and it’s leaves had an otherworldly glow to them as they shifted from purple to blue to turquoise. I got up and stretched myself out, I was incredibly stiff and knew that I would be shedding my scales soon. I found a nearby stream and wadded into its waters to rid my body of the dirt and debris left from the roots that encased me. I faintly felt a powerful force come from somewhere far in the East but I wrote it off as something powerful arriving in the afterlife. I need to find out why I was awakened I haven’t been needed for anymore wars and strangely everything felt peaceful, if I wasn’t to be used as a weapon then why in the fresh hell was I awake. I need time to recuperate and test out my body, I’ve grown quite a lot and I’m much larger than I was when I first fell asleep, I also need to find more of my kind. Mother always said that Dragons aren’t meant to be alone, I know her words hold truth because I feel as though I’m going mad being by myself. With that being said I was in no condition to do that just yet, I needed to find food and get used to my new size. I stretched out my wings and flapped them a few times to try and get my bearings, then without further hesitation I got a running head start and flapped as hard as I could. I tipped and stumbled down on my first attempts before I finally got enough altitude to begin circling the massive tree that had acted as my bed. Feeling the wind on my scales and stretching my wings felt amazing, I got a rush of adrenaline as I began to twist and turn in the air thoroughly enjoying my flight. I had missed doing this so much, it even brought up memories from when I was just a hatchling learning to fly for the first time. I circled Yggdrasil a few times before I spotted dots moving on the horizon, I decided to leave the tree that I had called home for so long and investigate what I saw. Once I got close I landed as softly as I could and was immediately met with growls of warning from a group of wolves. I tilted my head to the side and hissed at them “where is your leader?”. The biggest of the trio looked up at me in surprise “Your trespassing on our Alphas land, we are members of the silver moon pack.” I flicked my tongue in annoyance, “I have just woken up from a very long slumber under the roots of Yggdrasil, I’d like to know what all I’ve missed while I’ve been asleep and it seems as though your pack is the only group of living things around here. Tell me pup what is your name? I’m assuming your Lycans since you understand the tongue I’m using.” The other pups that were there were looking at me confused. The largest one spoke up “My name is Zephyr and I’m the head tracker of our pack, we go by the name of werewolves or Lycans our pack is made up of both, I can understand the tongue your using because my mother was a dragon herself. Though I must admit she wasn’t nearly as mighty as you seem to be.” I was immediately shocked by his words, dragons weren’t meant to breed with any other species because our blood was very distinctive. The matchmaker is also in charge of our mates to make sure that our blood and spirits are compatible, just what all have I missed in my time asleep? I saw his eyes cloud over for a few minutes before he shook his head and continued “That was my Alpha, I told him that you’ve requested his audience, please follow us.” As I followed the werewolves deeper into their territory I couldn’t help but get a sinking suspicion that the reason I was awoken is much more complicated than I initially thought. *Dragon from the cave* I felt my senses become more alert as I felt the seal that was keeping me in this cave start to weaken. Slowly staying as low to the warm stone as possible I stalked my way to the mouth of the cave and waited. Once I felt that the seal was close to breaking I let out the loudest roar that I had mustered in centuries and saw that the water shot forward with the force from whatever broke the seal and my roar. I launched myself through the cave opening and immediately took off into the sky. The fresh air and wind almost brought tears to my eyes as I tried to remember the last time I was able to fly. That cave may have kept me safe but I was ready to freed from it, ready to run, hunt and finally enjoy my time alive. I know why my mom had to seal me away, that doesn’t mean I hated being cooped up any less. I swooped down and landed as I caught scent of a delicious smelling elk, I hadn’t ever felt hungry during my time in that cave but I missed the taste of fresh meat. I landed quietly a few yards away from it and slowly stalked towards it, once I saw my opening I pounced and made sure to kill it quickly so that it didn’t suffer. I muttered words of thanks for the animals sacrifice and dug in until all that was left were bones. I debated on eating those too but chose to bury them instead so that I could give back to nature. Feeling full for the first time in ages I flew back to the waterfall to get a good look at myself in the stream that connected to it. My horns were much bigger and honestly speaking I looked like a bad ass, I was a lot bigger too. My jet black scales were shining in the sun and my pure white horns looked as if they were glowing. My rainbow colored irises looked back at me and I looked a lot more alive and healthier than I would have thought. Strangely I think that cave may have grown with me to accommodate my size because this entire river and waterfall looked much bigger than I remembered. I took a dip in the stream to wash off and swim around for a bit. I was really enjoying my time outside until I felt a pull towards the West. It wasn’t like anything I had ever experienced and if I didn’t know any better I would have fell down the damn waterfall had I not been paying attention. I shook the feeling off and decided that I would go investigate it after a good nap in the sun. As I lauded myself out onto a sun warmed rock I kept feeling that nagging pull towards Yggdrasil, maybe the tree was calling out to me for a visit. I fell into a fitful sleep as my body protested for me to in the direction of the pull.
