Into the Village
"And remember students, what is fated by the stars is destined to happen, you cannot change that and you mustn't change it," Ms. Mona said wrapping up the class. "You may use the rest of the time to talk," Ms. Mona made her way to her desk, I quickly raised my index finger. "Yes, Mystic?"
"If the stars have already decided what is fated to happen, why does it matter whether we change it or not?" I asked Ms.Mona as she sighed.
"Because that was what the first astrologist told the world, as his followers we shall listen to him regardless,"
"Ms. Mona that doesn't answer my question, if fate is something that is destined to happen then it shouldn't matter whether we try to change it or not," I said standing up from my seat, "has anyone tried to challenge the stars before?"
"As a descendant of the first astrologist, Mystic you should know very well not to test fate and trust in the stars," Ms. Mona said, "I advise you not to test the stars or you might see misfortune in your future,"
"If that misfortune is "destined" then I shall challenge it with all I have," I said as the frog croaked signalling the end of class. Everyone got up from their seats, grabbed their stuff and left.
“Mystic?” Ms. Mona said as I was about to leave.
“Yes?” I said stopping what I was doing to listen to her.
“You’re an amazing astrologist, and it seems like the classroom isn’t for you. Why not go out into the world and see how astrology is for others. Give some people a few readings and take a look at their reactions and how they feel about astrology,” Ms. Mona suggested, frankly it just seemed as though she didn’t want me around anymore. I nodded my head and agreed to give readings to the normal people within the village. “Great, take some time off of school and try to figure out why astrology is so important to not only us but the other people,”
“Got it, thanks Ms. Mona,” I said gathering my things. As I’m about to leave Ms. Mona says one last thing.
“What is fated will not change, Mystic,” she said as if to remind me not to challenge fate.
“Sure, Ms. Mona,” I said leaving the tree, where classes are held. As I walked outside I noticed my best friend, Ursa, waiting for me. We always walked home together since our parents were friends and neighbours. Whenever I was held back after class because of my strong opinions, she’d be outside waiting for me.
“How much trouble are you in this time? Is it bad?” She asked as we made our way home.
“It’s not bad but I think she’s finally had enough of me, she said the classroom isn’t for me and I should go get non-astrologist’s takes on astrology and even give them readings,” I said rolling me eyes.
“But your readings are so cool, I wish I could do them like you. Could you do one for me now?” Ursa asked as her star pupils shone.
“Yeah,” I said as I put my bag down and took a deep breath. When I do readings for other people, I create a colour-coded orb. The orb takes the colour of their recent future feelings, and they get a glimpse of their future but I cannot see that part.
“Aw, not that one” Ursa whined in disappointment. “Do the miniature me one, ”. Mini-Me is a reading I usually do for myself, I make a miniature version of myself out of stardust and it's able to tell me what I did in the future and the outcome of it. I rarely use that method due to the amount of stardust I have to burn to get it to work.
“I don't have stardust with me though, ” I said enlarging the orb.
“Fine I’ll settle for this one, ” Ursa said looking into the orb. While I hold the orb up, the person I'm doing a reading for will glimpse into the future for 5 seconds. Seeing their future selves for a bit. “Ou looks like we're going into the village soon, ” Ursa said delightedly.
“I think we should just stay home and practice on your readings rather than disturbing the villagers, ” I said not even the slightest bit interested in going to the village.
“Don't give me that, come on let's go, ” Ursa said grabbing my hand and running towards the village. Astrologists like Ms.Mina and us need to detach ourselves from this world to be able to get closer to the stars and to do this means we must live in nature and get away from the modern world. This means we have little to no concept of money or modern technology. Ursa loves to see what the village folk have but I'm not too fond of anything they have. Once we arrive at the village, Ursa runs off into the village square. “Mystic look at this, ” she says pointing to an enormous ceramic waterfall. “Excuse me, sir, ” Ursa says getting the attention of a man nearby. “May I ask what this huge thing is?”
“Oh this is called a fountain, ” the man said smiling at us.
“What does it do?” I asked getting closer to the fountain.
“It’s used for decoration, but some people throw money into it and make wishes, ” the man explained.
“Do the wishes come true?” Ursa asked.
“Sometimes, I think it depends on what you ask for, ” the man said.
“What about that man in the fountain? What's he doing?” I asked pointing to another man in the fountain bent over collecting something.
“Hey! Get out of there!” the man shouted at the man in the fountain. The fountain man was startled and dropped what he had and ran. “He was collecting the money the people had made their wishes with, ”
“Maybe that's why some wishes don't come true, ” Ursa said looking at me. “ so would this be like your deity?” Ursa asked the man.
“No, it's just for fun, ”
“What about the water? Where does that come from?” I asked pointing at the top of the fountain as water spuds out of it.
“Have you guys never seen a fountain before?” the man asked us as Ursa played in the water, “we’ve had this fountain for a few years now, ”
“We’re astrologists so we don't know much about this fountain, ” I explained to the man.
“Astrologist? Can you do readings?” the man asked excitedly.
“We can, you should ask my friend to do one for you, ” Ursa said putting her hand on my shoulder. “ she's the best in our class, ”
“I’d love a reading but I don't have any money, ” the man said looking sorry for the inconvenience.
“Don't worry I'm doing readings for free no charge, ” I said smiling at him “think of it as a thank you for telling us about this fountain, ”
“Thank you so much, how do you do your readings? Should I hold out my palm?” the man said stretching his hand forward.
“No no, just stand right there and do whatever comes natural, ” I said then looked at Ursa, she nodded to me. I then created the orb and held it out to the man, he looked frightened. “It's ok Mr. just look into the orb and you'll get a glimpse into your future, ” I said holding the orb to him, the man looked into the orb and it turned red. “Now Ursa!”
