Chapter 1 _ The Woman He Could Never Refuse
Rainwater crawled slowly down the glass windows of Morgan Tower.
From the seventy-second floor, the city looked unreal beneath the storm.
Headlights blurred into streaks of gold.
Buildings disappeared into fog.
Somewhere far below, traffic moved like a river of light.
Cold.
Everything about this city felt cold.
Adrian Morgan loosened his tie slightly while staring at the pile of documents spread across his desk. His office was silent except for the faint ticking of the clock behind him.
Three acquisitions.
Two overseas meetings.
One investor dinner he had absolutely no interest in attending.
And seventeen missed calls.
All from the same person.
His phone vibrated again.
Elena.
The corner of Adrian’s lips lifted faintly.
His assistant standing nearby almost looked frightened by the sight.
Because Adrian Morgan rarely smiled.
“Sir,” the assistant said carefully, “the board meeting starts in fifteen minutes.”
Adrian picked up his phone instead.
Another message appeared.
Are you really not coming?
A second message followed immediately.
I just returned to the country today.
Then another.
You’ve changed.
Adrian exhaled softly through his nose.
Dangerous woman.
Even after all these years, Elena still knew exactly what to say to him.
“Cancel dinner with the investors tonight,” Adrian said calmly while grabbing his coat.
The assistant blinked in surprise.
“Sir?”
“Reschedule it.”
“…Understood.”
The assistant hesitated briefly before speaking again.
“Miss Elena returned from Italy today, correct?”
Adrian glanced at him once.
“You talk too much lately.”
The assistant immediately lowered his head.
“Sorry, sir.”
But Adrian wasn’t angry.
Not really.
Because the heaviness sitting inside his chest for weeks had finally eased a little.
Elena was back.
And somehow, that made this exhausting city feel less empty.
Across the city, Lina Hart stood inside a convenience store staring at two different brands of instant ramen like her life depended on it.
“One is cheaper,” she muttered quietly.
“But this one has an egg picture on the cover. Psychological manipulation.”
The cashier snorted from behind the counter.
Lina laughed awkwardly before grabbing the cheaper one anyway.
Rain poured heavily outside.
She hugged her thin cardigan tighter before stepping out into the cold night.
Her apartment wasn’t far, but by the time she climbed the stairs to the fourth floor, her shoes were already soaked.
“Perfect.”
She pushed open the apartment door.
Darkness greeted her immediately.
Quiet.
Small.
Safe.
Lina leaned against the door for a moment after entering.
Some people would probably hate living like this.
A tiny apartment.
Secondhand furniture.
Instant noodles for dinner.
But to her—
Peace mattered more than luxury.
Peace meant survival.
She dropped her bag onto the couch before walking toward the bathroom.
The moment she pulled her damp shirt over her head, she froze.
The lotus mark rested quietly beneath her shoulder blade.
Silver lines curled softly around the flower beneath pale skin.
Beautiful.
Wrong.
Lina immediately looked away.
“You’re not part of my life anymore,” she whispered.
But late at night…
she still remembered her mother’s voice clearly.
Never let anyone discover the lotus mark.
And never fall in love carelessly.
Lina shut off the bathroom light quickly.
She hated remembering.
The Velvet Room sat at the top floor of one of the most luxurious hotels in the city.
Gold lighting.
Crystal glasses.
Soft music drifting through the air.
Everything smelled expensive.
Elena Zhang leaned comfortably against the velvet couch while several friends surrounded her.
Beautiful.
Elegant.
Untouchable.
A woman across from her laughed while raising a wine glass.
“To Elena finally returning home.”
The others cheered.
Elena smiled lightly.
“I leave for two years and suddenly everyone misses me.”
“Not everyone,” another woman teased. “Only Adrian Morgan.”
Laughter filled the room instantly.
Elena lowered her eyes slightly before taking a slow sip of wine.
Adrian.
Even hearing his name gave her a strange feeling.
Comfort.
Control.
Security.
For years Adrian had loved only her.
No matter how many times she rejected his proposals.
No matter how many times she avoided giving him a real answer.
He still stayed.
Still waited.
Still looked at her like she was the only woman in the world.
And honestly?
That terrified her a little.
Because people changed.
Feelings changed.
And men especially changed.
“What are you thinking about?” one of the women asked curiously.
Elena smiled again.
“Nothing important.”
“Liar.”
Another woman suddenly leaned forward excitedly.
“Let’s play truth or dare.”
Groans immediately spread around the room.
“We’re too old for that.”
“And yet you’re all still interested,” Elena said smoothly.
The game started anyway.
Round after round.
More drinks.
More laughter.
Until eventually—
“Elena.”
A woman pointed directly at her.
“Truth or dare?”
Elena crossed one leg over the other lazily.
“Dare.”
Several women exchanged looks immediately before grinning.
“Oh?”
“You’re brave tonight.”
The woman reached into her purse slowly before placing a tiny packet onto the table.
Elena’s smile faded slightly.
“What’s that?”
“A little fun.”
Another woman laughed.
“We dare you to drug Adrian Morgan.”
The room exploded with shocked laughter.
“No way.”
“She won’t do it.”
“She’s obsessed with him.”
Elena stared quietly at the small packet.
Then slowly laughed.
“You people are insane.”
“You scared?”
“Of Adrian?” Elena smiled faintly. “Never.”
Truthfully—
she wasn’t scared Adrian would get angry.
She was scared of something worse.
One day…
he might stop loving her.
And Elena Zhang had never learned how to lose.
Her fingers slowly closed around the packet.
The women screamed immediately.
“Oh my God!”
“She’s actually doing it!”
At that exact moment—
her phone lit up.
Adrian.
Her expression softened instantly.
“He’s here,” she murmured.
The atmosphere shifted the second Adrian entered the private lounge.
Several women straightened unconsciously.
Others fixed their hair quickly.
Adrian Morgan carried that kind of presence naturally.
Cold.
Sharp.
Untouchable.
But when his eyes landed on Elena—
something softened.
Almost invisible.
“You came,” Elena said warmly.
Adrian sat beside her calmly.
“You sounded annoying over text.”
The women laughed.
Elena rolled her eyes dramatically.
“You missed me that much?”
Adrian looked at her quietly for a moment.
“…Maybe.”
Something unreadable flickered briefly across Elena’s face.
Then disappeared.
A drink was placed into Adrian’s hand.
He accepted it without hesitation.
Because it came from Elena.
And Adrian Morgan had never learned how to refuse her.
