The One Who Came For My Blood
Chapter One: The Alpha Who Came for My Blood
“Marry me, or your father dies before sunrise.”
These were the very first words to ever reach me from the most dangerous man in the werewolf world.
Dante Vescari.
The Alpha King.
The monster every wolf feared.
And the one who was destined to kill me.
The night he came for me, the whole forest grew silent.
Not even the moon dared to grace me with her presence.
I stood before my small, wooden cabin, my hands trembling as hundreds of armed wolves circled my home. Their eyes, gleaming and sharp in the dark, seemed ready to tear apart anyone who dared to attempt to escape.
My heart throbbed against my chest.
Not because I was afraid of them.
Because I recognized the one with them.
The one man who could bring entire kingdoms to their knees with a single gesture.
Dante Vescari.
He stepped from the darkness. High, muscular, menacing. Strands of black hair, unruly and windblown, danced as silver eyes that looked like they could pierce through every secret I had. I had done my research. He was the one who;
ruthlessly hunted down and killed his enemies, wiped out three packs of rivals in a single night and knew no love.
And yet, they called him a demon. And in the face of him, I was starting to see their point.
“Aria Valen.” He spoke my name as though it were an insult, a threat. I met his eyes, raising my chin to refuse him the satisfaction of knowing I was afraid. “Is it customary for Alphas to break into people’s houses at night, Alpha?”
The wolves behind him began to growl. Never in their lives had anyone ever dared to speak to Dante Vescari like that.
I, however, never found myself good with following the rules. His eyes narrowed further. “Are you sure you know who you are, girl?” Confusion rippled through me. “What do you mean?” He moved closer.
Every step felt like a threat. “I was given very precise instructions. Find the last Moonshade.” That word… Something that felt so foreign to my ears. “I want nothing to do with your wicked schemes, so please leave my family out of this!” My mind raced to my family, and in reality, the only one I could endanger was myself.
For a second, his eyes held a very different emotion, one that was not rage or hatred, but a complete bewilderment that I can never find on the face of the Alpha King again, before it faded. “You're mistaken. You happen to be the only barrier that stands between this world and ultimate destruction.” I snorted with laughter. “Really? You drove all this way, just to tell me I'm a villain in some prophecy?” “No.” He hesitated. “I came to kill you.”
His words hit me, a lot harder than they should have. I stood completely frozen for what felt like an eternity, unable to breathe, before a rush of fury replaced my shock. “Is that all?” I demanded, looking him straight in the eyes. “You don't even know who I am.” “No.” His gaze was as cold as ice. “But I know the power that flows within your blood. I ball my fists. Whatever lies you've been told, deep down inside, I am no monster. Dante clenched his teeth. A flicker of doubt played within his gaze.
Here I was, facing the all-powerful Alpha King, and he seemed to be struggling. And that's when he grabbed my wrist. Pain shot through my arm as a peculiar heat spread through my entire skin. Then it stopped. The wolves behind Dante let out a loud gasp. He remained frozen, a look of disbelief on his face. Silver marks were glowing on both our wrists, a bond.
A mate mark. It couldn't be. His wolf had just claimed me as its mate. The girl he was supposed to kill was his mate! “No...” Dante Vescari was genuinely shaken for the first time in his life. I was just confused and looked down at the bond on my wrist. “What is this?” He yanked his hand away. “Impossible.” “What's impossible?” He met my eyes and for a moment, the coldhearted Alpha King became just a mere man as he finally saw that the prophecy had been wrong. I wasn't going to destroy his kingdom. I was going to rule it.
A wolf behind Dante lunged forward. “Alpha, what are your orders?” There was a pause, and everyone waited. Dante Vescari looked from the Alpha King, the man that had set out to kill me, to his enemy, his mate. Then he declared, “Seize her.” My stomach lurched. Even though I knew he would never do it, the bond meant nothing to him. He was still going to kill me.
That's why everyone gasped when he suddenly said, “She'll go with me.” The wolves looked up at him in confusion. “Alpha, but-”. His gaze cut them off. “I said, she'll go with me.” No one argued with him. As he roughly dragged me to the horses, he whispered into my ear, so low only I could hear him, “You will do exactly as I tell you, Aria. His voice was harsh, but a wild glint was in his eyes.
“The whole world is going to be convinced that you are the danger. I didn't turn away. What was that supposed to mean? He met my gaze. “You are the reason I will end up being the villain in my own kingdom.” The news spread like wildfire among the werewolf community; The Alpha King found the Moonshade girl. But instead of killing her, he took her.
Hours later… An attempt was made to kill me, not by my enemies, not by any enemy packs, but within the walls of Dante Vescari’s castle, because he knew the truth before I did. I wasn't just the last Moonshade. I was the daughter of the woman who brought the entire Alpha bloodline to its knees.
Plus… Dante's father had killed my mother.
