One Year Later
Dean POV
I glance behind me, sniffing the air and relax. Nobody is following me. With long strides, I walk towards the hidden cabin. The cabin has been in our family for years, and Dad is the only one using it for his fishing trips. I open the cabin’s door, but the second I step inside, a cup flies past my head and smashes into the wall behind me.
“What the f**k, Elise?” I grunt, looking from the shattered pieces to her.
“A year!” She snaps, throwing another cup at me, and I duck just in time. “I’ve been stuck in this place for a year!”
“Stop it!” I shout, grabbing the third cup mid-air and placing it down. “This was your choice, remember?”
“I didn’t know you were going to take your time when we made the deal,” she huffs, sitting down at the kitchen table. Her eyes are wild, and her bottom lip is trembling as she looks at me. “I’m stuck in this place twenty-four-seven, and I’m losing it.”
“I get it,” I nod, walking over and sitting beside her. “I didn’t expect Dad to be so stubborn. He doesn’t even want me to kill the b***h who murdered Leonard! I also thought I’d be the alpha by now.”
“If I’d known it would take this long, I would’ve gone to Norway,” Elise pouts, crossing her arms, and I am instantly irritated.
“Then go,” I snap. “I’m not stopping you. You can still leave; you’re not my prisoner.”
She presses her lips into a thin line and looks away, staring out the window. I exhale deeply and rake my fingers through my hair.
“Look,” I sigh. “When I convinced Dad to send Declan to the border, I thought he’d die within a month or two – especially since he had trouble connecting with his wolf. But the asshole is resilient and has actually wiped out a nest. Besides going to the border myself, and killing him, what do you want me to do?”
Elize’s foot starts bobbing up and down, and I can practically see how the gears in her head start working.
“Before you say it,” I say firmly. “I’m not killing my brother – not because I’m a coward, but it would be too obvious.”
“Well, I wouldn’t mind killing him either,” Elize grimaces sourly. “But I will be executed within ten feet of the border.”
“I can’t make you stay,” I say, standing up. “But I’ll honour my part of the deal. If you want to leave, I’ll help you.”
“We should distract him,” she blurts out.
“What?” I frown, utterly confused.
“Right now, Declan is focused,” she says, her lips curling into a devious smile. “That’s why he’s successful. With the right distraction, he’ll make a mistake.”
I stare at her in disbelief. Does she honestly think that is a good idea? That is a gamble, to say the least. Distracting him does not mean he would die.
“Declan thinks with his d**k,” Elize continues. “He always has. He has been neglecting his duties for years, all for a quickie. Now, he’s stuck at a border post with nothing to do but kill vampires. Send him a distraction.”
“I’m not disputing your theory,” I say, cautiously not to hurt her feelings, and have a cup hurled at my head. “But I don’t think it’s going to work.”
“Of course it won’t work,” Elize huffs, rolling her eyes. “But it’s an idea, a starting point, a beginning of a plan. Send him a female with an STD which can kill him, or a female assassin. At least I’m trying, which more than I can say about you. You’re just sitting around and waiting for something to happen. But I guess you don’t care because you’re not stuck here.”
“Elize,” I inhale deeply, controlling my anger as my fingers wrap around the chair’s backrest. “I made the deal because I wanted to help you. Throwing acid into Declan’s face helped me. But I don’t need you, or your insults. So, do what you must. Stay, leave, I don’t care. If you choose to honour our deal, good; if not, leave. Either way, I’ll bring groceries and supplies next week.”
“Dean, wait!” She calls when I turn away, but I ignore her and keep walking.
Yes, Elize did me a favour, but a lifetime with her would probably be a nightmare. So, it would be best if she leaves.
However, she did give me an idea, a loophole to my Nia-dilemma. Torturing her is highly unsatisfactory. It irks me that she is still allowed to breathe while Leonard cannot. So, what if I make her bleed and cry out in pain? She still breathes. She is still within our borders and is still fed on our dime. Not only is she using oxygen, but she is costing the pack money.
But if I send her to Declan at night, vampires could kill her. Even better, if Declan kills her, Dad will surely disown him. And if he does not kill her, she could distract him. And if that does not work, I must get my hands dirty and get rid of Declan. Because Elize is right about one thing … this has been dragging on for too long.
