Tamaras POV
Present
John and Annie have been calling me non stop last week, morning and night. They were driving me crazy, asking again and again if I had an answer to the offer. Every time I said "not yet". John even went to look for me at my apartment a couple of times. The first time I opened the door and received some nasty looks and passive-aggressive comments about my future and poor decisions, fortunately he seemed to like Penny because he was less annoying when she opened the door, and after our last talk she was discrete or even lied for me about being in the apartment. Instead, they flirted and giggled with each other.
It was weird to think that John had that side of him. I do not know if he was trying to get information from Penny or if he was honestly being nice. In any case, it helped me to avoid him.
To my disgrace, my work has been kind of dense. We had been staying late and the new client was so annoying, calling us to unproductive meetings instead of letting us work. It is not the first time I have had a difficult client, but every time it is a challenge to demonstrate our work is worth it. After a day of meetings and trying to reach our deadline, we decided to go home and take a break, but lucky me, Annie was outside of my job waiting for me.
- What are you doing here? I asked, not hiding my annoyance at her presence.
-Hello to you too sister. - She smiled gently while all my coworkers passed next to me and waved their hands in goodbye.
-What are you doing here? - I asked again, irritation in my voice.
-Well, you are hard to find. We have been calling you and you apparently are never in your apartment. - She probably knows now that Penny has been lying about me not being there.
-Well, maybe it was a sign that I had not made a decision about the offer. Besides, I said I would call you, or John.
-Yeah I know, but we are not the patient type.- She giggles innocently.
I rolled my eyes and decided to walk to the exit.
-Hey! We are not done! - She shouted, catching up with me. -What are your plans? for the country house. Do you not want to sell it?
- I do not know. - she was persistent. I will give her that.
-That vineyard is old, you know. Besides, it probably does not work anymore and you will not get any benefit from it. -Ha! Does she really think that will convince me? scaring me from the place I once called home?
-Then, why do you want it? - She looked at me apparently not knowing what to say. -If it is a waste of money, why do you want it? You do not have any memories there either, so why?
-You do not think that you can make it work, right? - she laughed, trying to change the subject, but she only succeeded in making me mad. - I mean, you have never had a business before, I do not think that you would be able to handle it. -She continued laughing.
I keep walking out of there, trying not to answer her insult and just wanting to get the hell out of her, but decided to shut her mouth.
-Oh, do you think that you would be able to take the wine business? I mean you do not have any experience in wine or in business. - I smirked. - Or are you going to leave it to John, since he is the man and you can only have a couple of dollars from his work? - I exhaled loudly, sarcasm written all over my face - I guess that is nice, to have someone with the brain to work for you and to receive, what? like 1% of his makings?
I was about to get in my car when she stopped me and slammed me against my door.
-Do you really think that you are smart? You have no one, remember that. - I could sense her frustration and I was smirking all the time. - Tsk, you keep smirking, but you better accept that offer, because if you do not…
-What? Are you going to take everything from me? Or will John? - I told her, standing my ground.
-It does not matter who does it, what matters is that you will be left with nothing. Because, let me remind you; your mother is dead, your father is dead, your grandma is dead - She kind of sings every time she says the word dead. -not even Mister Johnson can protect you from us and you know very well that we will fight and come for you, so that you are left with nothing! Or maybe we can let you build something that you cherish just to take it from you, as a nice reminder of how insignificant your existence is.
After her tantrum, we stood in silence looking at each other with annoyance. We were both angry, but we stopped talking until I got tired.
-Are you done? - I decided to break the silence and started to open my car’s door, letting her know that whatever this was, it was over.
-We will see you next Friday in Mister Johnson’s office. We will sign the papers there. You better come or I will personally make your life a living hell. - She smiled politely as if she had not just threatened me. This is why I dislike her so much. She just smiles and pretends that nothing happened. She walked away and I saw her disappear from behind.
I got into my car and started to drive to my apartment. When I arrived, I left my guard down and all the anger and frustration started to consume me. My mind was going at full speed with angry thoughts. I just needed some release but it was late into the night, so going for a run was not an option. The only thing that I could do was to let my mind go loose or I would definitely get a headache from suppressing my feelings and thoughts.
Damn her, damn them! How dare they think of me as nothing but a useless girl! I am not like them, I do not break like they would if they lived my life! I could go there, to that f*****g vineyard and get that f*****g place up and running. My grandmother taught me well, even though I was young, I knew all that was needed. Do they really think that they can take everything from me? They are so wrong! I have suffered my share of things and I am still here, not thanks to them! Not even thanks to that old woman that raised some f*****g insane Millers! I shouted at my pillow as loudly as I could until my lungs hurt.
Thunder rumbled through the window and the wind seemed to push into it. Suddenly, I heard Penny shout from outside and went running to her. There was an open window and the wind knocked some glass on the floor. That must have been a strong draft. We cleaned it together and silently I made my decision to leave. I did not have to stay here. Annie was right about something, and it is that I have no one left, so maybe I can start new somewhere else.
In the middle of the night, I packed some things, not caring that it was dark and I was going to drive for hours to get there. Not to mention that I could get lost easily. I have not been there in years. Maybe I will come back in a couple of days for the rest of my things or maybe I will regret leaving and come back here. Whatever, I will just go and whatever happens happens. Besides, I have to make sure the country house is fine and I can live there or maybe sell it. I was about to leave but remember to pick my grandmother's letter from the drawer. Maybe I will need it.
