The alarm clock went off like a foghorn. Abby rolled over and slapped at the nightstand in an attempt to silence the noise. She had watched the numbers slowly roll by while wrapped in the security of Shane’s arms. After a low-key dinner, they had come back to the hotel and turned on the TV, which was when Shane promptly fell asleep. Abby had spent the night willing the phone to ring with news. She couldn’t remember ever having spent a more difficult night filled with worry and fear of the unknown.
