Elara stepped off the small boat, her boots sinking slightly into the damp sand as she took in the vast, untouched landscape of the island. The sky was a brilliant shade of blue, but the air was thick with the saltiness of the ocean. The crashing waves were the only sounds, and yet, the eerie silence of the island felt more oppressive than peaceful. It was beautiful in its own wild way, but Elara could feel her heart tighten. This was a place where people came to escape, not to confront.
Behind her, Jaxon was stepping off the boat with far less care. He wore a loose-fitting shirt and cargo shorts, his easy smile never wavering as he surveyed the scene with a carefree gaze. He was the type of man who looked out of place in nature, like someone who had never gotten their hands dirty. His tousled hair and relaxed demeanor only emphasized his lack of concern about the environment around him.
Elara rolled her eyes, annoyed at his lack of seriousness. They were stuck on this island for who knew how long, and he was treating it like a vacation. Meanwhile, she had seen enough of life's hardships to recognize that this trip could go from adventure to survival in the blink of an eye.
"Looks like paradise, huh?" Jaxon said, his voice light with amusement. He was already checking his phone, which, of course, had no signal.
"Paradise?" Elara muttered, barely able to hide the sarcasm. "It’s a remote island. Not exactly what I’d call paradise."
"Well, it’s definitely not the city," he replied, still grinning. "But maybe that’s a good thing. No noise, no traffic, just... freedom."
Elara scowled, turning away from him. She didn’t need to be lectured on freedom, especially not by someone who had everything handed to him. The last thing she wanted was to be stuck here with someone like him. The whole group of strangers had been assigned to this island adventure trip—an escape from their busy lives, or so they thought. She didn’t share that sentiment. To her, it was just another forced detour in her life—a way to make her forget, if only for a moment, the weight of everything she'd been running from.
As they began walking inland with the others, the tension between Elara and Jaxon was palpable. She wasn’t sure what irritated her more: his cocky smile or the fact that he seemed to think everything would be just fine. To her, this was nothing more than a distraction, and she wasn’t about to let her guard down for anyone—especially not him.
