CHAPTER 1
Bitter surprise
Aurora
“Here comes Aurora the dumbass!" I heard someone say and an outburst of laughter followed as I walked into the hall quietly. It was prom night and the hall was decorated with balloons and streamers, the lights were deemed to create a romantic atmosphere.
Oblivious of the loud blasting music enumerating from the speakers, I held on tight to my silver purse as if I was depending on it for some kind of support, probably to quench the nervousness and anxiety that was already building inside of me.
Why were people staring at me weirdly?
Does this dress make me look weird?
I asked myself rhetorically, avoiding their gazes.
Just in time Avery, my best friend walked briskly towards me, wearing a weak smile on her pale yet beautiful face. She is dressed in a golden dress, looking like a royal queen.
"Aurora, my love, you look so beautiful Tonight!" Avery complimented me at the same time tugging my arm .
I smiled at her confusingly, "Are you sure, Avery? I just feel nervous because these people are staring at me in a weird manner? "I said, adjusting my glasses.
Avery widened her eyes dramatically, smiling suspiciously."Of course not, your dress is perfect!" She said adjusting my dress.
"Then why are they staring at me strangely, is it my glasses, or my braces, I knew I shouldn't have worn them today" I panicked.
"This is going to be hard to take in, but something bad just happened right now!"
I was still in a state of confusion. "What is happening Avery? Tell me, what happened? Go on, start talking.."
Avery froze all of a sudden, holding my shoulders, like she was trying to protect me from viewing something. "Whatever you do, please don't turn! I beg of you." She said her voice was icy and shaky.
"What are you talking about…."My voice faded instantly as soon as I turned to see the biggest shock of my life. Nicholas Cage kissing Hailey Taylor right in front of me, people are bringing out their cellphones to capture this moment cheering them up, I nervously turned to the left part of the hall where his friends were, holding up a cardboard sign that reads 'Hailey, Please be my girlfriend!'
"They look so good together." I heard someone behind me say.
Then all of a sudden people started to chant " Say yes,say yes"
Hailey nodded her head, her blonde hair bouncing slowly, their attention diverted from the sleek and perfect couples to my hopeless self. My cheeks flushed and my vision had become blurry with tears as I couldn't contain the embarrassment.
Was this a joke Or even a dream?
"Let's go home Aurora,They are just idiots." I heard Avery say, but I couldn't move, I was too ashamed to, it felt like my world was shattering right in front of me.
How could Nicholas do this to me? Why did he ask me to be his date publicly just to embarrass me on my prom night?
I stared at Nicholas in disappointment, almost breaking down in tears, he just kept smiling like a clown, his hands resting comfortably on Hailey's skinny waist. He looked very unapologetic about everything. It was at that moment everything started to make sense. I was just a comic relief. A joke.

"Brrrrr…brrrrr
The sound of my cell phone ringing jilted me out of my reverie. "Hi Avery, how are you?'' I responded to the call.
"I'm very fine and you? Are you prepared? "My best friend Avery asked
"I don't think I am ready to see him." I said, my voice shaking. "I'm not ready."
"Aurora, you can't back down, not right now." Avery said. "This was your decision, I gave you an option to stand up to your dad but instead you want to prove to him that you are a good child when he refuses to see that no matter what you do or hard you try, just pull yourself together. You're just getting cold feet."
I shook my head, even though Avery couldn't see me. "No, it's not just cold feet. I really don't think this is right. You know what? You are right, this is my choice"
Avery was silent for a moment. "I know you're scared, but think about the promises you made to your Dad, don't f**k this up!"
Someone knocked on my door and I already knew who it was. "Talk later, bye." I said quickly to the phone.
"Alright, Love you xoxo." Avery said at the other end of the line as the call ended briefly.
I got up to answer the door to meet my father, his eyes yet sharp, his gaze all-over my body, observing my black net dress.
"Why are you dressed as though you are mourning someone?" He asked.
The small happiness on my face faded." Does it matter what I wear? Your business is more important here after all." I replied rudely.
"Why do you like Making things hard? Anyway, your husband-to-be is here to see you." my father said, his voice stern and cold. "Remember, you need to be respectful and listen to every word he says." He added
I nodded affirmatively. "Alright, I've heard." I said, my voice trembling.
"I don't think this is right. I don't want to marry a strange man I have never met before, I want to fall in love naturally and get married." I voiced out.
My father's expression hardened. "Don't be ridiculous. This is what's best for you."
"No, it's best for you not me,you have never considered my feelings. "
"Well, maybe if i had a male child to manage my company, that would be so much better"
"You know what? It's pointless arguing right now."
I said, stepping out of my room hurriedly, suddenly irritated, breathing in and out consequently, walking down the stairs to meet my groom to be and I saw him sitting alone in the living room, his eyes fixed on the floor, and his hands clasped tightly in his lap. His dark suit was perfectly tailored, His hair was neatly combed, and his shoes shone brightly. He looked every inch the successful businessman, and yet there was something familiar about him, like I knew him from somewhere.
As soon as he noticed I had arrived he turned to stare at me and there was a shocking expression on his face. Instantly, I fidgeted and dropped my cell phone to the floor. What was Nicholas Cage doing here?
