FERRARO LOPEZ USED her pass key to open the hotel manager’s door. She’d held off all day, respecting the ‘Do Not Disturb’ sign he’d hung on the door knob. But she was afraid she’d be fired if she didn’t clean his rooms. He’d threatened her with firing before. And she had mouths at home she needed to keep fed. So, after knocking for several minutes and not getting an answer, Ferraro made a decision. The sitting room was empty but it was obvious somebody had been in it. A small table was turned over and the lamp that had been on the table was on the ground, glass from the light bulb scattered across the carpet.
