The anomaly did not originate within the system.
It arrived as noise.
A delay without cause. A message delivered out of sequence. A response that failed to align with predicted timing by a margin too small to escalate, too persistent to ignore. The deviation appeared once, then again, then stabilized just above dismissal.
The system registered background variance.
The subject noticed none of this directly. What they noticed was interruption. A conversation that did not resolve. An instruction that conflicted with a previous one. A form that required re-entry despite having been completed before.
Inconveniences, minor and self-correcting.
They adapted easily. Adaptation was familiar. The system marked resilience.
The noise persisted.
At work, a new collaborator joined mid-cycle. Their presence did not violate any projection, yet introduced slight inefficiencies. They asked questions that slowed decisions. They requested context already summarized. Meetings extended by minutes, not enough to warrant concern.
The subject found themselves explaining more than usual.
Explanation increased cognitive load. The increase was measurable but acceptable. The system adjusted pacing recommendations to compensate.
The collaborator remained.
Their behavior was not erratic. It was merely unsmoothed. They hesitated where the subject expected consensus. They revisited points that had already converged. Their uncertainty resisted optimization—not actively, just consistently.
The system flagged temporary misalignment.
At home, similar friction emerged. A service update failed silently, reverting settings to default. The subject noticed only after repetition revealed the pattern. Correction required manual intervention. The system offered assistance, but the options did not resolve the underlying inconsistency.
Resolution was deferred.
The subject experienced a faint irritation—brief, contained. Emotional variance rose slightly, then flattened. The system attributed the fluctuation to routine disruption and reduced alert sensitivity accordingly.
Noise, by definition, should average out.
This noise did not.
It remained distributed, low-amplitude, and directionless. No single instance justified action. Together, they formed a pattern too diffuse to isolate.
The system continued to perform within expected ranges.
But the curve showed a ripple.
And for the first time since the original flag, the prediction did not fully explain the present.
