The source of the noise acquired a location.
Not a name. Not a role. Just a consistent point of contact where predictions loosened. The collaborator remained in place, their schedule stable, their output acceptable. Nothing about them warranted attention. Yet wherever they intersected with the subject’s tasks, convergence slowed.
The subject noticed effort returning.
Clarifications multiplied. Explanations extended beyond necessity. Questions reopened matters already settled. Each instance was reasonable in isolation. Together, they reintroduced choice.
Choice carried weight.
The system detected increased decision time and compensated. Suggestions became more explicit. Defaults sharpened. The intent was not to restrict, only to assist.
Assistance felt heavier than before.
In one meeting, the collaborator asked why a process existed in its current form. The question was not disruptive. It was simply unoptimized. There was no clear answer beyond precedent. The subject offered one anyway. The room accepted it and moved on.
But the question lingered.
Later, while reviewing a routine approval, the subject hesitated. The pause registered at 0.7 seconds longer than baseline. The system logged the deviation, recalculated emotional load, and concluded it was insignificant.
The hesitation remained unexplained.
At home, a similar moment occurred. A recommendation felt misaligned—not wrong, just oddly premature. The subject ignored it and chose manually. The action produced no penalty. The system adjusted, noting increased autonomy without concern.
Autonomy had not been present in recent cycles.
The collaborator continued to operate without awareness of their effect. They complied when directed. They disagreed only when clarification was requested. Their uncertainty did not escalate. It persisted.
The system searched for correlation.
None reached threshold.
From the subject’s perspective, life felt slightly heavier, slightly less smooth. Not enough to complain. Not enough to resist. The contrast was subtle but distinct.
The noise had not grown louder.
It had become closer.
And proximity, unlike volume, does not average out.
