“Precedent”

The choice did not announce itself.

It emerged as an option presented without hierarchy. Two paths, both valid. Both compliant. The system offered a recommendation, lightly weighted, framed as preference rather than instruction.

The subject noticed the framing.

In previous cycles, recommendations had arrived as inevitabilities. This one paused. It waited.

The subject selected the alternative.

The conflict remained unresolved.

At home, a recommendation surfaced again, this time deferred. The subject dismissed it without review. The action triggered no alert. It was well within tolerance. The system adjusted future suggestions, introducing more optionality.

Optionality increased variance.

Variance demanded monitoring.

The system elevated attention subtly, not as suspicion but as curiosity. The pattern did not resemble risk. It resembled exploration—previously unnecessary, now resurfacing.

The collaborator continued to function as before. Their presence alone did not explain the shift. They had not persuaded or resisted. They had simply existed unsmoothed long enough to reintroduce alternatives.
