Charlotte's POV
I woke up from a restless night's sleep in the room I was given to “Inhabit” for the time being with Emma knocking on my door. Guess all this really wasn’t just a bad dream after all. There was a very small part of me that figured this was one of those times where you wake up and laugh at everything you dreamt about. I dropped a chandelier on someone, my dad turned into a giant wolf, my mom may or may not have died. I didn’t have time to absorb everything before my body was forced to succumb to the exhaustion that had set in.
A light knock indicated a very nervous Emma on the other side of the door. It is very odd compared to her usual “bull-dozer” personality where she literally pushes her way in no matter who is there or what is happening.
“Come in, I just woke up.” I stare at the door waiting for the timid approach and pretty soon I am rewarded with a polite smile and apologetic look on her face.
“Hey girl, you should get up and change into some workout clothes. We are going to try some self defense training this morning with some weight training after,” she politely smiled as if she was trying to be encouraging.
“Do we even have clothes or anything here?” I ask while flipping the duvet over so I can swing my legs out. I hate to admit it but that was the comfiest bed I have ever slept in. I didn't sleep much but I was comfortable.
“Oh yes of course.” She said as she was grateful for the task of showing me around the room to break the awkwardness. I had slept in yesterday’s clothes so i was grateful for the preparedness that was whatever this is called for once.
She whisked around the room opening drawers to the dressers and opened a secondary door inside to reveal a huge walk-in bathroom with the same design as my childhood home. Sleek and elegant with minimal clutter. The bathroom opened up into a walk-in closet that had all types of clothing hanging. Mostly workout clothing hung neatly. Charlotte's breath hitched when she realized that her parents had taken the time to organize the clothing by color and type just like she had. She ran her hand through the clothes as she looked around, noting there were two of every item.
Emma awkwardly cleared her throat to break the silence. “There’s a few different sizes on everything if that's what you're wondering about. Now that you will begin to work with your wolf you will start gaining some serious strength and muscle. When you start learning to transition into your wolf you will also shred some clothes as well during the change, we go through a lot of clothes sometimes.”
She wasn’t making any eye contact as she spoke. Emma’s body language was uncomfortable and shy. Not her normal self at all. “Emma, can you please stop being so awkward. I’m not mad at you guys, I am hurt by all the lies but I am not hurt. If this is my life now I would much rather have you in my life to help me.” As I finished a genuine smile spread across her face reaching her eyes.
Emma ran to Charlotte with her arms outstretched running into her with so much force it almost knocked them off their feet. “Charlie, I am so sorry for all the secrets, I promise the intention was to tell you everything soon. You almost found out so many times by accident that we were all going to sit down and show you but the time had not come yet and then all this happened.” She rambled trying to give whatever explanation she could to ease any tension left between us.
“I know, I trust you guys. I would have liked to know before but maybe you're right, we can always find an excuse to be too busy to do something. I know my parents wanted me to have a normal life.” I finished and she gave me a final squeeze and pulled away, wiping a tear from her eye. Emma smoothed out her clothes and pointed at the clothing.
“Now get some clothes on and meet me three doors down on the left.” She was already out the door by the time she finished her sentence so I hurried up and changed. Walking back through the bathroom I opened some cupboards to find toiletries. After a quick search I found everything I needed to freshen up and was on my way.
Leaving the room I walked a short way down the hallway to find Emma and Luke Sparing in the huge gym. My mouth dropped open as I watched the speed and accuracy they were both using. It was clear that Luke was stronger and more technical but Emma’s build gave her a speed advantage and she was able to twist and dodge, even flipping around at times to escape his advances.
“Good Morning Charlie, If you close your mouth and head over to the treadmill you can start with a 30 minute warm up run. After that we start you on some basic weight lifting to build strength and then some self defense,” Luke started in his very blunt tone.
Leaving no room for any argument against Luke, Charlotte made her way over and began her run. Watching and analyzing how Luke was beginning to slow down and conserve energy letting Emma waist hers and play out herself with all her jabs and kicks that he expertly blocked. Soon Emma was panting, still trying to keep up her relentless pace. Luke grabbed her wrist when she punched and swung her over him slamming her into the mat. He had her pinned quickly and precisely, letting her struggle against the hold exhausting whatever energy she had left.
Tapping out she huffed, “This isn't fair! When are you going to let me win! In Fact don’t even let me win! Just lose!” Charlotte smiled to herself knowing how poor of a loser Emma was. She hated being second or losing anything, period. Her tantrum was soon hushed with one look from Luke.
“Em, you are too focused on your speed and using all these fancy tricks. In a life or death situation your opponent won’t be admiring your flips and rolls. I have explained this before. Watch for weaknesses. Stop showing off. If you were doing that you would have had me beat long ago.” Luke released his hold on her and helped her up, chuckling at her glares and attitude. “If you wanted to win you would have been focused on the right things instead of showing off. You have the ability to be a great warrior, you're talented and smart, use that. Being athletic isn’t the only skill you need to keep yourself alive and protect others.”
His constructive criticism seemed to work as I watched all of the attitude roll off Emma's shoulders and she smiled again.
“Ok, I'm going to go cool off while you walk her through the weights. I’ll be back for self defense training.” She stated as she walked toward the entrance.
Luke waved Charlotte to the weight racks and machines. They spent an hour going through form and doing the reps Luke wanted with what he called beginner weights. Charlotte sure didn’t feel like this was what she would consider beginner weights but she pushed through and completed every rep fighting her own mental barriers to overcome self doubt. Once Emma came back they spent two hours going through basic arm holds and body holds, teaching Charlotte how to break out of them and reverse a few putting Emma in the same hold.
“Both you girls have done well today, but you both need a shower badly.” Luke was holding his nose to bring a light tone to the insult as he laughed and ran away from the girls throwing their water bottles at him.
“I’ll go shower and meet you in the kitchen for lunch?” I asked Emma, looking over at her unwrap her wrists and ankles revealing bruises from combat training earlier. “Emma! Are you ok?” I rushed over looking in concern. Her left wrist was so swollen from blocking it looked almost broken.
“I am fine Charlie! We are wolves, we can take a lot of damage and our wolves help us heal faster remember!” She was standing there laughing at me being so concerned. “It's honestly no big deal, this will heal in probably an hour or so.” She said so matter of fact that I just looked at her dumbfounded.
“I guess I have to get used to all of this,” I started laughing at myself realizing how ridiculous I must look to her worrying about bruising. “I’ll meet you in the kitchen for some food, I am starving.” Just as i said that my stomach growled loudly adding hast to my statement.
“Sounds good girl, I will get something started after I rinse off so that you don’t get so hungry you start eating the furniture.” She said laughing at me. “You never know what our wolves want to eat.” Turning back before walking out the door she winked at me. Not sure if I should take that as a joke or not, I half jogged back to my room to get in the shower.
Jumping out of the shower I start drying off.
“Hello Charlotte.”
I freeze. Fear grips my heart. “Who’s there?”
I am looking around the bathroom for anything I could use to protect myself and I find a candle stick holder in the corner. Grabbing it I hear a chuckle from the voice again. Covering myself in the towel I backed into a corner to hopefully protect myself somewhat.
“My sweet dear, I am not going to hurt you. I am part of you, my name is Calypso, I am your wolf. This is how we can communicate. Two sharing every part of our lives. I am blessed to be part of such a strong Alpha female. You and I are destined for great things my love. The Moon Goddess has blessed us both a lifetime together.”
“The Moon Goddess? I think I remember Luke and Emma talking about that last night. She is like a God? She is your creator I think.” I finished and felt myself start to relax slightly.
“Yes, but you should remember she is OUR creator not just mine. She created us as her children to roam and flourish on the earth as a way to show the other gods and goddesses there is a way to have a balance between beast and beauty. We are her children and she guides and helps us whenever she can, she wants us to succeed and grow. You my dear are different, she has been working extra hard to try and protect you and keep you safe. She has paired me with you because I am the oldest female wolf, I was the very first shewolf she ever created. She has done this to give you the best chance. I can teach you everything I have learned over my past lives and help you reach your full potential.”
I still felt frozen after listening. Still getting used to hearing another voice in my head that wasn’t mine, I ventured to ask, “So you have lived with others?”
“Yes. Werewolves live a much longer life than humans. I was blessed with many lives, some happier than others but all of them to learn lessons to become your wolf. The Goddess usually clears a wolf's memory when they are reborn but she gave me mine for the sole purpose of helping you.” Her voice is so sweet and caring. Charlotte felt like she was finally united with part of herself that she had been missing.
This is so exciting Charlotte thought to herself and her wolf. She hurried and put on some clean clothes so she could go tell Luke and Emma that she finally understood what they were explaining.
Running out she quieted her steps as she heard some low murmurs coming from one of the doors labelled utility closet on the door. It was cracked open and she peered around the opening. Emma and Luke were both watching multiple screens displaying people that Charlotte didn’t know searching her house. The center four screens displayed four different angles all showing the bookcase they went through to get down here. There were three people ripping the bookcase apart. Slowly revealing the metal vault door that locked them out and us down here. Watching the three men work was another with dark hair and rippling muscles as he stood there with his arms folded across his chest. Charlotte couldn't pull her eyes away from him. He was the most beautiful human she had ever seen.
“Who is that?” She asked, startling both Luke and Emma.
“That there is who has been hunting you and your family.” Luke started with what sounded like a low growl.
Emma pulled the empty office chair under herself so she could sit down and motioned for Charlotte to do the same with the remaining chair.
“His name is Xavier, he is known for being ruthless and he has taken over many different packs to absorb them into his own. I meant him as a child at one of the Alpha conferences when your father and I were still in the pack.” Luke nearly spat out his explanation. His disgust is clear through his tone.
“Can they get in here? Are we even safe or are we trapped?” Charlotte asked, hoping for her feeling to be wrong, still staring at the one man on the screen.
“Your mother placed a protection spell on the vault. No tools or force can open that door. Only your mother or another witch from her family can undo the spell.” Emma soothed Charlotte's fears away with her explanation.
Just when she was feeling a little better Calypso spoke up in Charlotte’s head, “Mate.”
“Umm… What is a mate?” Charlotte asked Emma and Luke. They slowly turned away from the screen watching her.
“Do you remember what we said about soulmates last night?” Luke asked. Giving Charlotte a curious look.
“Oh yes of course, right… sorry I forgot.” She quickly covered up, deciding not to say anything to them as she needed to talk with her wolf first. This seemed like a sick twist of fate. Why would the Moon Goddess make her soulmate her enemy? This was a cruel joke.
“I have some other news as well,” Charlotte quickly diverted the conversation. “I meant my wolf just a little while ago, her name is Calypso, she said she was the first shewolf the goddess created and that she was paired with me to give me the best chance at survival.”
Emma and Luke now had their turn to look shocked and in disbelief.
“No wonder my wolf felt the need to protect you all these years,” Emma stated. “Charlie, Calypso has legends and myths written about her. We probably even have some books in the library down here about her.”
“Don’t worry about the books sweetie, as you're ready I'll fill you in and teach you everything you need to know.” Calypso softly added.
“I think it’s time we sit down for lunch and have a more in-depth talk, ladies,” Luke added as he got up from his chair and raised his arm to let them walk out first.
Charlotte felt a weird feeling in her gut as she walked out. She didn’t know how much more she could absorb but she had a feeling she was about to get a crash course over the next couple hours.
