Charlottes POV
Charlotte and Emma sate at the island counter drinking some green tea as they poured their attention into the books Emma had grabbed. She had taken anything that had any remote resemblance to Calypso mentioned. Luke's knowledge was limited and he even admitted to part of the culture and history being lost through generations as technology became prevalent.
"Look here it shows Calypso's part in the first war between vampires and werewolves in the early 1500's." Emma pointed at a detailed story that highlighted Calypso as a savior as she moved humans out of villages close to the war to save them before they were taken out by either species at war. She then joined the fight herself but refused to kill and only left her attackers incapacitated as the made her way through the front line. She then used her powerful Aura to make both sides listen as she pleaded for the leaders to look around at the lives lost. The lives that could have made a difference in the world and those that are innocent fighting only because a leader told them to. She begged for them to recognize that this is how our species would see extinction if the hated spread among their kinds creating a never ending war. This is the exact moment the species all came together to live in acknowledgment of each other but swore to a strained peace treaty to protect their existence.
"Oh my," I felt like I was in utter shock. As Calypso's history was starting to snap into place I began to feel just how important she was, but it also made me extremely nervous. War after war Calypso made an appearance. This obviously meant that a large war was coming and she and I were going to be a large part of it. Butterflies spread throughout my stomach and I began nauseous feeling the pressure increase as she felt unsure of the future and unworthy of the part of her that was now her wolf.
Running to the bathroom she began to get sick hurling as self doubt began to force its way into her body. She had never felt this way before. She had always tackled things head on and with confidence because I have always been well researched and prepared for her tasks. This was completely different, she would have to think on her feet and take each day in stride. This terrified her. So consumed by her own thoughts Charlotte didn't even notice that Emma was holding her hair back rubbing small circles on her upper back to try and help console her.
"It's ok Charlie, everything will be ok." She kept repeating to try and distract Charlotte from the panic attack.
Gathering myself together I rose and went to the sink to rinse my mouth and wash my face with ice cold water. After splashing my face a few times I turned to find Luke standing in the doorway next to Emma.
"I bet some adrenaline from the last 2 days is making its way out now." Luke looked on assessing Charlotte as he continued. "I'll go get some Gingerale and crackers, It's probably best if you relax for the next little bit with your feet up."
As he left Emma came and gave me a supportive side hug. I gave her a small smile of appreciation. "Thanks again Emma, you have always been there for me when I have needed you."
"You know I will always do what I can to help, your like a sister to me." She smiled lovingly at me, "besides family sticks together through thick and thin." She gave me one more squeeze before stepping back to give me some space. "I think it might be better if you get some rest and maybe ask Calypso herself about her history. She may be able to tell you in a way that might help you stay calm. Besides, our wolves have a way of helping us to stay calm with stuff like this just as we help them stay calm in their true form when they become angry."
As i turned back towards the mirror I noticed my eyes almost begin to glow as i felt Calypso push forward in my mind. It was true a sense of calm and serenity washed over me.
"Hello Charlotte," Calypso cooed in her calming voice, "You are not ready to know everything yet child, but yes what you have already concluded is true. We are in fact part of something very important. All I know is that we were created to inspire change and acceptance. Sometimes in my past lives I succeeded and sometimes I failed. It is up to us to work together and find each others strengths and weakness and use those to our advantage. All I can tell you is this time you have to prepare right now is not often awarded and we need to take advantage of it to the best of our ability. If we do not it is likely we will fail in what we are meant to go. Just remember that when you feel like this again you can call for me and I will come forward to help you."
"Thank you, I just feel so unworthy and unsure of myself. Maybe the Moon Goddess made a mistake in pairing me with you. I don't know what to do or how to prepare." I ran my shaking hands over my hair to try and smooth it back to its regular position in my tight bun.
"Just breathe through your doubts, the Goddess does not make mistakes. I assure you that even if my pairings failed or succeeded in our conquests each and every person had unique gifts and a fire inside them that made it a very exciting life. The same fire that I felt inside of you when I was able to come forward the first time. You my dear have something different though, I can't tell what it is but I believe it has something to do with the magic inside of you. Magic that is older then even I am. It feels ancient and strong but very similar to what the Goddess uses herself to create us."
My hands finally stopped shaking as I listened patiently to her. "I wish that I had had the chance to talk with my mom about this. It would make things so much easier right now."
"Be patient my dear, she is closer then you think she is. From what I remember I had a witch friend in my past lives. They were able to project themselves to each other no matter the distance to talk with one another. She would meditate and then think about the person or place she wanted to be and after some practice she would be able to do faster and easier every time. Meditation itself is a great technique to help calm yourself and find your true focus and realign your thoughts when you feel scattered."
"That's a great idea!" I felt my energy slowly start to renew as I thought about maybe getting to contact my mother and finally get some more answers. "I think I need to go rest for a bit though, I feel a headache coming on."
"Yes, you will need to rest and listen to your body. You will never know what will happen so be smart and rest when needed. Life has a funny way of presenting challenges and change when you least expect it," Calypso advised with years of wisdom.
As I starred at myself in the mirror I realized that I had no idea who I was. I was still terrified but maybe living with some unknown and adjusting accordingly to whatever was coming my way would help me move past my fears of not being organized. I would use every second I had to prepare and grow as an individual to become the best version of me I can be. First however, I needed some rest.
I leaned against the wall in the bathroom as I heard a click and the wall began to shift. I fell backward with a yelp as my butt slammed into the hard floor. As I looked around the door slid shut hiding itself from it's existence from the other side once again. There was no handle or button to open it again. I yelled for Emma and Luke but my calls only echoed back towards me through the dark hallway. As i turned around two sconces lit up as I stepped forward. Every couple steps lit another set of lights on either side reveling a hallway dug through rock. With no other option and curiosity getting the best of me I walked forward. The tunnel leading toward what looked like natural reflected against the walls. The tunnel opened up into a cave and I was looking out at the same place at the river I saw the wolf at two days ago. I was down in the cave I had noticed before. Looking around the ledge I noticed some carved steps leading upward. Leaning over the edge to see if the wolf or anything else was there to notice me I began to slowly walk up the steps. They lead to a ten foot high wall with a vine hanging over the edge. Pulling on the vine and eventually trying to hang on it I determined that it should be able to hold my weight. I tied it around my waist and wrapped it in a figure eight under between my legs looping it back around the descending portion. This should assure that if i slip while climbing then it should catch me.
Taking a minute to feel with my fingers for a small hold that I could grab and move my foot into I continued to scale and climb taking my time to find safe spots to grab and lift myself up. "Calypso please help me do this without dying." I tried to concentrate on breathing out the nerves and breathing in courage with each breathe. I felt her answer as a sense of calm washed over me again. I used it to climb faster and found myself reaching over the top grabbing onto the vine to start heaving myself up. My muscles were still exhausted from training but I was able to slowly pull myself help using my legs to push upwards.
Landing on the ledge I pulled myself around the rock I was on two days ago allowing my legs to hang over the edge again. I wanted to hide myself just incase anyone or anything was in the woods again.
I took a minute to absorb the fact that I was now alone outside of the very "jail" that was my only safe place. Shaking my head I decided that I might as well see what I can around the house. I would stay as quiet as possible and hide until they leave. I can then see if I can make my way back into the house and through the bookcase door and back to safety.
Peaking around the rock I looked for any movement. Not seeing any I then slowed my breathing to see if I could hear anything unusual. I could hear birds and squirrels chirping and that told me that this part of the forest was clear of anything dangerous for now. Moving slowly and taking careful steps not to step on anything to alert any unwanted parties. I made my way down the path deciding it was the quietest way for my to travel instead of through the dried branches and pine needles off the trail. I was exposed but as long as I could hear other animals in the forest I continued.
Passing the strawberries I had passed before i knew i was getting close to the house. Still feeling Calypso I decided to ask her something that had been on my mind. "Calypso, why haven't I shifted." It was something that I was thinking about since the first conversation with Luke and Emma.
"Your father was putting something called wolfsbane in your coffee for years." She sighed almost angrily. "It was to help you incase you were ever injected but it also keeps me at bay and weakens me so I can not come forward." I could feel the hurt and pain she experienced everyday not being able to meet me yet. She let it all come forward to show me what she had endured knowing it was all to keep me safe. To keep us safe. "We could shift now but it is not the time yet, if we shift the other wolves will be able to smell and track us easier."
"What do you mean smell us?" There was no way they could smell us that far away. It's not like I don't shower.
"Our species all has individual and unique scents. It is part of what allows us to stay connected and recognize other wolves from our packs and other packs," she stated trying to help me fill in the blanks as i continued to step through.
"Quiet now Charlotte, I can sense others nearby, your to exposed here." She warned and I could feel a sense of urgency through her emotions.
Just as she stated that the forest fell silent again. I knew this feeling all to well by now.
"Your best chance is to stay still and not move fast or show any aggression or run." She pushed forward and I felt my muscles infuse with blood ready for whatever they needed to do. "I will help you to the best of my ability but I can not show myself yet, it is to dangerous."
A low growl came from my left as I turned my head slowly finding a beige colored wolf that had it's teeth bared at me as a warning. Approaching slowly ready to run or attack if needed.
Another growl sounded to the right and behind me. I was surrounded. Fear pushed forward but I controlled it and held my hands still and my gaze steady.
"Your doing well Charlotte, ask the beige wolf to shift so you can talk," she ordered and I followed her guidance.
Looking back at the beige wolf I tried to keep my voice steady, "Please shift so we can talk."
The wolf snarled and seemed inconvenienced but I soon heard cracking and watched with horror for the second time as the bones rearranged and reshaped into a huge male human.
"What is it you want to talk about?" He spat out clearly annoyed by the inconvenience of this. "You're lucky your even alive right now, I should just order the attack right now."
"Ask to see his Alpha," Calypso urged.
"I would like to see your Alpha please," keeping my voice steady as I asked I noticed another four wolves coming into view.
"What makes you think you deserve to take any of our Alphas time?" He asked almost seeming curious. "Your trespassing rouge, we usually kill rouges on sight but I am interested to see your reasoning."
Charlotte couldn't hold her tongue any longer, "Actually sir, I don't know what a rouge is but I do know this... YOU ARE ON MY LAND." I forced strength into the last part of the sentence and the other wolves all took a step back almost in shock.
"Charlotte, what are you doing?" Calypso asked panic clear and apparent. "Your exposing us and challenging him, if he attack's I will have to force a change and it will be very painful."
Keeping eye contact with the man I refused to let calypso's words and emotions get the best of me. I have been through enough and i will be damned if this is how it ends.
"Ah... so... not a rogue after all." He smiled wickedly. "It looks like we have a Lady of the house here men, I am almost positive that the Alpha will absolutely make time for you considering you are one of the people we are looking for."
Two grey wolves from behind me snarled and motioned with their heads for me to walk forward on the path towards my house. Surrounded now more and more wolves began to join the escort. I was unsure why so many were needed or how they knew to come here but I followed the man in front of me. It was then I noticed he was stark naked from changing. I had been so focused on not showing fear that I had only looked at his eye's.
"You my dear are going to learn very quickly to do as I advise, this is a very dangerous situation you have put us in," Calypso lectured. Her anger pushed forward again and I felt the emotion start to rise as my own anger. I was done feeling weak and out of control. My fists clenched and my blood began to boil. I could feel heat rise into my cheeks.
"You said that we are an Alpha female, and a strong one at that." I barked back in your mental argument. "I will not watch my childhood home be ripped apart by these...people."
"If you do not want my advise then I will not come forward and protect you, you will learn the hard way and we will see if we live long enough to do what we are supposed to." She snapped back and just like that I could feel her retreat to the back of my mind almost pacing back and forth in anger.
Anger continued to build as we stepped into view of the back porch where the man I saw in the video was standing. His arms folded the same as before indicating a dominating stature. His stance seemed to almost ripple authority and control with his hard eyes watching her approach.
A soft breeze blew from behind her and she watched as he sniffed the air and his eyes dilated. His icy stare morphed into a look of shock. Charlotte thought she saw lust pass through huis eyes as she stopped in front of him but it was quickly masked with a blank indifferent look.
"Looks like we found the daughter sir," the man that escorted her stated.
Sir, she thought, this man is the Alpha. She looked him up and down seeing every rippling muscle clear as day in real life instead of on the surveillance camera. She felt Calypso come forward harder then ever. "Mate, he is our mate!" She cheered but I could feel some hesitation. I could feel my bogy change again as she wanted to make herself known. Charlotte felt a wave of power radiate through her and even flow outside of her. The other wolves whimpered sensing the change in her. Some even showing their necks to Charlotte in an attempt to show respect.
The Alpha's face again showed shock and then anger, "Are you challenging me darling?" He asked wickedly almost encouraging her to say yes. Charlotte looked around and then felt her wolf push forward even more. Charlotte felt herself get pushed into the back of her mind where she became a spectator in her own body.
"You can feel my strength boy, do not taunt me, I am the very reason you are alive today," taking in a calming breathe Calypso continued to speak with her voice through me. It was calm but there was a strong warning behind her tone. "You know who I am to you and yet you feel the need to protect your ego? You will not win, you have two choices. Challenge me or we can talk without prying eyes and eavesdropping ears."
"You think that you can beat me? An Alpha?" He laughed at her statement. "Even your wolf sounds as weak as you look."
"Then call your attack dogs off and step off your high horse boy," Charlotte felt Calypso smile inwardly when the Alpha's smirk turned to amusement. She had all of his attention now. That was her goal. Calypso knew the second he smelled her that he knew she was his mate. She also knew that he wouldn't hurt her.
"Xavier, this is clearly not worth your time, just lock her up and call the Elders in to come dispose of her," The escorting man stated.
Xavier... Charlotte thought. Just thinking about the name made her drawn to him even more. Charlotte felt Calypso whimper internally, these Elders are something they need to avoid. They were dangerous.
"No," the Alpha said glaring at the man, "I think we need some time to get some information from her first, we were tasked to find them all, not just her."
"Shift," He commanded Charlotte.
"Silly boy," Calypso seethed, "you can not command me. I will shift on my own accord, but i think all of you here figure out who it is your dealing with." As she finished Charlotte felt Calypso send her calming emotions with a little bit of regret. Calypso spoke inwardly towards Charlotte, "This is going to hurt young one, but they need to see me to know all the facts."
As she finished Charlotte felt her head explode into a headache. Pounding with rising blood pressure she screamed and startled the wolves surrounding her. Screams continued to ripple through the air as more bones broke and rearranged. It felt like hell. Everything hurt and then all of a sudden the pain disappeared and she felt herself laying on her side heaving and gasping for air. She blinked and did a double take at a snout in her vision. She lifted her head and looked around to notice white paws. She looked up at the Alpha and he was frozen in place. He looked torn between being proud and yet he seemed worried. She didn't know why but he crept forward and bent down.
His hand reached out and pet her shoulder. "Was that your first shift little one?" His tone was soft and caring. "What a brave thing to do."
"Xavier," The other man spoke quietly, "She is the white wolf."
"I know Carson," looking up at my Beta I knew he knew exactly what I was going to say next, "Call the Elders and tell them we didn't find anything here and will be continuing our search north."
Xavier looked up at the other wolves, "If any of you here say anything about this you will be killed on the spot, I need full obedience in this until we find out what is going on."
The rest of the wolves all presented their necks to the Alpha as a sign on their obedience in the command.
Charlotte felt pain rip through her body again as she began to change back. Blackness consumed her and her vision disappeared. The last thing she heard was the Alpha yelling at someone to call the doctor to come to the office.
