Xavier's POV
My men had worked tirelessly to try and break through the hidden vault door. We had no idea what was behind it but the scratched tile and the scent that was here early made it pretty clear it was used to escape and delay us for their escape. I have grown more impatient with my team as their attempts fail over and over again. I have placed a call to an alley to come help us remove what ever incantation is on the door preventing us getting through.
The call will cost me a favor owed to them and these witches are unpredictable right now but my failure in locating these individuals would mean the loss of my pack and title anyways so there isn't any room for failure. My curiosity is still peaked by this young woman in the pictures. The more i stare at them the more I began to feel drawn to her. There is something about her innocent smiles and the "normal" life she has had that shows me she isn't the monster they made her out to be. How would an evil creature that they described go to a human school for years and not attack anyone. Let alone have such celebrations that are shown in the scrapbooks we found. I will admit that seeing the once powerful Alpha Zane sporting the ugly Christmas sweaters the family chose to sport year after year was slightly comical but I still assessed every photo to find anything we needed to find them.
Zane's office was as expected clean and organized. It also didn't provide any other details for us that we already didn't know. Other the the supply of aged whisky we found in the basement there was nothing in this house that provided anything useful.
I was currently sitting in the office answering phone calls from my tracking teams that again still couldn't provide anymore answers either. The frustration had spilt over into an emptied bottle of whisky sitting in the desk with the last few swallows sitting in my glass.
It was times like this that I allowed self pity in and felt the impact of not having a mate yet. Those with mate's had their second half. Almost like a Yin and Yang situation. when one side was out the other helped to bring everything back into perspective. It's the very reason we cherished mates so much. A mate is a gift from the Moon Goddess that our kind takes very seriously. While I believe in the stories the Elders told us about these mixed breed monsters part of me also believes what is a common belief that Katrina is Zane's mate. There is no other explanation for the trouble they have gone through to stay hidden like they have if they weren't fated to be together. Naturally if it is true we won't know until we find them. Seeing all these photo's the love shared between them resembles what my parents had as true mates. It's uncommon for our species to pick a partner outside of our mate but sometimes if a wolf can't find their mate them will chose another as a chosen mate. The bond develops like that between a human couple but it will never be as strong as a bong between those fated to be together by the Goddess. At twenty eight I was very old to not have found my mate yet but I refused to take a chosen mate. When I was meant to meet her my mate would come. Much to my fathers disapproval, he thinks I need to chose a mate to keep the bloodline going and have the pack stronger to have it's Luna by myside.
"Sir, we found a Rouge in the forest, we are bringing her to you now, you'll need to know that this one is a lot stronger then a rouge should be," Carson mindlinked me.
"I'll be on the back step." I put the papers and albums away and made my way out to the backyard. Just as I came to the edge on the landing I could see her shape appear out of the trees. Instant recognition came through as I started to make out the features as they approached. The breeze caught her scent and brought it forward. Fresh Lilacs hit my nose and my wolf pushed forward, "Mate." He was happy and kept trying to push forward but my years of training under my father taught me to control him.
"Easy Hades," I spoke inwardly to my wolf, "This is the monster we were brought here to hunt."
Hades growled at me, "You will not hurt my mate!"
"I am not saying anything Hades, we just need to play this out." With that he retreated and began to calm down.
As Carson my Beta spoke I watched as the little one in front of me looked me up and down. A feeling of proudness kept through me as I stared down at my mate. She was brave for her size. She proved it again as her wolf pushed forward and the voice changed as anger and power radiated from her as she spoke. Some of my men bowed to her as the power reached them. Her aura was strong, strong enough to shock me a little before anger pushed forward as my wolf became irritated with the challenge to my authority. I became amused as her wolf began to speak again. The final breaking point was this little thing calling me boy. As my anger became apparent her young women's eye's started glowing even more then their natural blue hue. Screams came out and her body crumbled to the ground. The change was slow and painful. I felt myself cringe and flinch with every scream.
The cries of pain died down to reveal a pure white wolf. I felt utter shock and yet a sense of recognition was felt. I feel like I have seen this wolf before. I watched carefully as the exhausted wolf began to look at herself frantically. It was clear this was her first time shifting.
I descended the two steps to slowly crouch by her side extending my hand to run my hand through her pure white fur. . "Was that your first shift little one?" I said as I kept my tone was soft and caring. "What a brave thing to do."
"Xavier," My Beta spoke quietly, "She is the white wolf."
"I know Carson," looking up at my Beta I knew he knew exactly what I was going to say next, "Call the Elders and tell them we didn't find anything here and will be continuing our search north."
I looked up at the other wolves, "If any of you here say anything about this you will be killed on the spot, I need full obedience in this until we find out what is going on."
The rest of the wolves all presented their necks to me as a sign on their obedience in the command.
Just then her wolf began to convulse in pain as she began to change back. She was drifting in and out of consciousness.
"Carson, call the doctor right now and have him meet us in the office, something is wrong." i shouted the order and then picked up the limp body of my mate. I was elated that i had finally found her but my fated mate was the very "thing" i was supposed to be protecting. On top of that she was a pure white wolf. These wolves are sacred in our culture. They are only born when our kind needs them for survival. They signify greatness and purity. My culture tells me to protect this wolf with my life. My mate bond won't let me put my mate in harms way and yet the Elders that I am supposed to look up to may still hurt her.
I may loose the pack that has been in my family for generations but a mate is sacred and i will spend the rest of my days thanking the Goddess for pairing me with this beautiful and strong mate. As long as I have her nothing else matters. I know I can just my men that are here with me but if it leaks that we are hiding her from the Elders there will be a war and we will not win.
I walk through the door into the kitchen and through the hallway with Carson close behind me. Walking into the foyer my men stop trying to enter the door at the site of their Alpha caring a small naked woman.
"Get back to work!" Carson barks and they quickly divert their eyes and begin again.
We reach the office and Carson shuts the door behind us. "She is your mate isn't she?" he asks looking around for a blanket to cover her up as I lay her down on the green suede couch.
He grabs a throw off the armchair in the opposite corner and covers her to give her some respect and dignity.
"Yes," I breathe out as I say that. Years of frustration and loneliness come out all in one breath. "She is your Luna."
With that he nods and acknowledges silently that we will speak of this later. Carson has been by myside since we were pups. We know each other so well that we can often communicate with just a nod or look.
A knock on the door signals the doctors arrival and Carson opens the large mahogany door to reveal our packs doctor, Bill. He had his bag with him and nodded when I gestured towards my mate. He began by checking her pulse and pricking her finger and placing a drop of blood on a piece of testing strip.
"Ah... I see," he mumbled, "it appears that this young wolf has a very large amount of wolfsbane in her system."
A growl escaped from my chest and the doctor peered over his glasses at my with a knowing smile. My outward anger revealing her importance to me to the old doctor. His age and wisdom has seen him through almost 700 years. His retirement is just around the corner but he knows what a possessive mate looks and acts like.
"It appears as though this young lady has undergone quite the stress, her blood pressure is almost dangerously high and she seems malnourished and very dehydrated. He began rummaging through his bag for supplies. "I'll start an IV and leave some bags of Normal Saline here for you to change out when a bag runs dry. Don't increase the drip rate, we don't want to overload her body, just help it along as it heals."
"I might add as well that wolves often heal faster if their mate is nearby." With that he left and told Carson he would be by in a few hours to check on her, but i was already tuned out of the discussion as I bent down besides her and brushed a few flyway hair from her face.
"Carson, could you please go up into the room with the white furniture and find some clothes for her, something comfortable." Carson nodded and went to leave. Stopping at the doorway he turned back around, "Congratulations man, I am very happy for you." His genuine smile made my own appear.
"Thanks man." I knew that I looked like a pathetic love sick puppy right now but I didn't care. I needed to find out how to keep her safe and hidden until I found out the truth of what was going on. My mate being the one I was getting paid to hunt is a sign alone rom the Goddess to pay attention. but her having a white wolf is a warning all in itself from the goddess.
Everything I knew about this Charlotte made me even prouder to be her mate. Hopefully now I could get her to understand that I am not her enemy even though I still need to look like I am to others.
Fate had found its match in the reality we were in. Only time would tell what would happen next.
I moved in beside her and rolled her onto my chest gently. Feeling her fit perfectly to my body I felt my mind slow and rest and soon felt myself succumb to the much needed rest I also required.
