Xavier's POV
It had been three days now since Charlotte had passed out. We eventually had moved her back into her room and the doctor was checking on her hourly to do assessments. He believes that her body had been pushed back her breaking point through shock and the first change but my wolf was getting restless waiting for her wake up. He would constantly whimper when we weren't near her and when we were he would whimper that she wasn't awake yet.
Carson and his tracked her scent back from where they found her and had found the cave and eventually the tunnel. There was no spell protecting the end of the tunnel so they used some C4 to make their way into the underground fortress where we found two other wolves. One I know as the old Beta to Zane and another younger female that put up quite the fight until Carson walked into the room. After finding out that she was his mate she began to listen to our side of the story and after some hesitancy she told us hers and Charlottes.
Knowing what my little mate went through has put this time she is taking to heal into prospective. Emma seems very nice and is slowly growing more receptive to Carson being around her. Both of us are having to learn that these two did not grow up in a pack and there for are learning about these things themselves instead of through their Elders stories. Emma at least knew of everything and knows what happens with mates but it was made very clear that Charlotte or Charlie as Emma calls her wouldn't.
Luke on the other hand has proved once again that as an old Beta he shouldn't have been underestimated. He played my guards like a fiddle and escaped with his scent disappearing on the same air strip. Upon further investigation there was another flight manifest that left for Canada and it was pretty clear we wouldn't catch him.
I haven't left Charlotte's side much other then to let my wolf out to run or talk a meeting in the office downstairs. When I leave Emma comes in to watch over her. Our Elders told stories of the White wolves and that they often had a wolf that was bonded to them as their personal protector. I often thought the protector was always their mate but the bond between Emma and Charlotte seems much stronger then just close friends. Emma even confided in Carson that she has felt drawn to Charlotte and will do anything to protect her. It makes my wolf happy that our mate will have a protector other then ourselves that is just as dedicated to her safety.
I am sitting up in the bed next to Charlotte as she peacefully sleeps. I have been bringing my computer in her to work while I am with her. Part of what makes my pack one of the biggest and strongest is the businesses it owns and runs to secure income and employment opportunities for my pack members. The Eclipse pack has been in my family for generations. So far back even that it's believed my ancestors were some of the first wolves, but of course that is speculation.
Looking at all the fiscal reports on the businesses I began to grow bored and started rubbing the bridge of my nose to relieve the tension headache that had started to form.
Pulling me from the reports my phone began to vibrate. Pulling it out of my jeans pocket the screen showed it was one of the Council Members that I have been ignoring calls from the last few days. Deciding not to cause anymore suspicion I answered quickly.
"Hello Councilman Eric, how are you doing today?" I ask the question politely but I already know the answer coming.
"Well I am fine but I would be much better if you had any news on the matter we have been attempting to reach you on." His tone was flat and pushy, just the way I hate it.
"We are still working on the vault door sir, we have called in a family friend that has experience with these incantations and should hopefully have news for you soon." Hoping my reassurance would suffice for the time being. "We haven't found anything other then the airport flight manifests we submitted to you five days ago, but I have chosen to stay here and search the town and surrounding area. There is a reason why they were able to stay here for years undetected by your search teams. I plan to find out how and it should make it easier to find them if we know what to look for sir."
His grunt on the other end of the call signaled his distaste at me pointing out his failure but I knew he wouldn't argue with my plan. "Fine, but I will be coming there in a week and I better have an update or any kind of news, better yet have their bodies there. They are dangerous and must be controlled quickly and silently, do you understand?"
"Yes sir," I grimaced thinking about this situation, "I understand perfectly, I'll keep you in touch, good bye." I hung the phone not giving him any more room to talk. I knew it would piss him off but it's better that I have control of the conversation and myself right now.
Running my hand over my face I let out and exasperated sigh. I still had not come up with a plan for how to protect my mate from the Council. Even how to just protect her from everything in general.
"Why did you lie?" A soft voice spoke from the other side of the room. As I turned around I came to stare at two beautiful blue eyes I had been longing to see. I went to sit back on the edge of the bed but she sat up and moved further away in the bed from me to keep her distance. I slowly lifted my hands to show I meant no harm and took a step back from her to give her space.
"Did you hear the whole phone call?" I asked to know where I needed to start with my whole explanation. I tried to make my big frame smaller to portray that I had no ill intentions.
"Yes, your phone is turned up so loud I could hear everything." She looked back at me again looking over every part of me as she spoke.
I gestured towards the end of the bed asking permission to sit down on the opposite corner, "May I sit down?"
With a nod from her I sat on the corner with one leg folded and the other hanging on the edge facing her. "I lied because you have surprised me little one, you are a very strong Alpha female and my mate as I think you already know?" With another nod I continued. "These people that hired me to find you and your parents are the governing council for our species. They control our kind and create laws and regulations that are designed to keep us safe. I am no longer so sure that their intentions are true and I am trying to figure out how to keep you safe from them. They are ruthless and have ordered a kill on site order for you and your family."
I watched as panic set in her eyes, "Oh my god, I need to find a way to let my mom know, they need to stay away." Tears were threatening to fall from her eyes. My heart leapt wanting to console her.
"I think I know someone that might be able to help you through this and explain a bit more," I mindlinked Carson to bring Emma up to the room but to tell Emma to stay calm as she had just woken up.
I heard a door slam open a few bedrooms down and footsteps run towards us, without fail Emma burst through the door and leapt onto Charlottes bed pulling her into her arms. I watched as Charlotte broke down into sobs as Emma comforted her. My heart longed to be the one to comfort her but it wasn't my place yet.
"I'll give you to ladies some time alone then," I turned to leave but Emma spoke up before I had.
"Umm... Xavier could you please stay with us?" She asked looking down at my mate. "I think it might help explain everything if your here and I know Carson will be here momentarily to help.
I nodded at her grateful for her understanding of the need to be the mediator for Charlotte and I to explain the Mate bond.
Just like she said a rattled Carson walked through the door way. "I am so sorry Xavier, I don't think Emma knows what the words "take it easy" mean." He have chuckled as he apologized but he still looked at Emma lovingly.
Noticing the interaction Charlotte began to calm down and peer back at Emma with a million questions in her eyes. "What? How does he know that about you? Why is he looking at you like that? Why do you smell different?" All the questions flowed out at once and Emma sat up and gave Charlotte some space just as Carson sat next to Emma.
"Well.. it turns out that Carson is my mate. He is Xavier's Beta, basically his second in command." She finished pointing at me as my mate followed her fingers and looked at me in silence.
"Do you remember what we told you about mates for wolves? They are basically our better half, our soul mate for example, and I happen to smell different because in situations and relationship regarding mates we tending to move a little quicker then those in human relationships. We are sleeping together but haven't "slept" together if you understand?" Her answer left little more to be explained.
"Why are we here..?" looking up at Carson and Xavier to make her point, "with them?"
Emma took a breath searching for the right words, "They are protecting us and they are trying to fond out the truth to what they believe is a falsely proclaimed witch hunt for lack of better words. Emma's face lifted into an apologetic smile at her choice of words.
"So your my mate?" Charlotte asked looking back up at me. I melted the second those eyes meant mine.
"Yes little one, we have been fated to be mates. We take mates very seriously and we can not hurt our mates because it in turn hurts us. Our bond will continue to form and grow stronger, eventually as we move through the mating process we will be able to pull strength from one another as we need to."
"Can I have a minute with Xavier please?" My heart swelled as she asked for me.
Emma nodded and got up clasping onto Carson's hand as they walked out. I looked longingly at Emma and Carson feeling slightly jealous but so happy for my best friend. Carson has also waited patiently like I have.
As they left and closed the door to give us some privacy I looked back realizing Charlotte had caught me staring at them.
"Do you think I am a monster or I am dangerous?" She asked waiting for an honest answer.
"No, I think you are the most incredible person I have ever meant. Even before I knew what your wolf was or the power you held I felt captivated by you. I wanted to learn everything about you. When I saw your were excepted to Harvard Law I was proud of you before I had even known you." As I knew that I was blushing but I didn't care if my mate saw me vulnerable.
"You smell like the forest after a fresh rain you know," she said letting me in on her perception of me.
I chuckled at her description, "You smell like fresh Lilacs, It's actually been one of my favorite smells since I was child but defiantly more so now." I smiled at her and I watched her reaction.
"How do I know you won't hurt me or anyone I love?" Her question was just like a stab to my heart but I knew she didn't mean it to hurt me. She was being smart and that is all i had ever asked for in a mate.
"Tell you what, you can ask Emma how to reject a mate, and if I ever do anything to harm you or your family you can reject me on the spot." Even as I said the words my wolf growled at me for just the thought of that ever happening.
"I think I remember Luke saying that if a mate rejects the other the rejected mate will slowly die, is that true?" She asked still being cautious but I could see some worry creep into her eyes.
"Yes, and that is how you will know that I will stay true to my word." As I finished she gave me a nod and a small smile.
"Ok then, I need to stretch my legs and I would like to go to the kitchen and find something if you and your goons haven't ate everything yet." She lifted her eyebrow at me clearly expecting an answer.
"Umm...well we have just been ordering pizza but I'll get you whatever you would like."
Her smile grew, "you be careful promising that to a girl, you don't know what your getting yourself into with a statement like that."
She swung the covers off and placed her legs on the floor, moving to fast and getting dizzy she began to fall. I ran around the mattress and pulled her into me picking her up off her feet as I did holding her in a bridal style. As our skin touched I felt little sparks and jolts of pleasure shoot through me. This was another sign that the mate bond was forming after being together. I could tell she felt it to and at first she seemed shocked but eventually gave in and rested her head into my shoulder.
"Well i guess I am a little weaker then I thought," she awkwardly laughed at her situation.
"The doctor just took your IV out this morning that we had going to give you fluids, but you haven't ate for quite a while so we will start with something small and let you build up your strength." She nodded and went back into leaning into me. My wolf yipped with happiness at the small movement. It was very clear how much she trusted Emma and she took her word to heart. She knew Emma wouldn't have said it was ok if it wasn't. I think she was also just still so tired from everything that she had little fight left.
As I descended the stairs and moved into the kitchen I found Emma and Carson at the kitchen Island. Emma looked shocked to see Charlotte in my arms but I placed Charlotte in the island chair next to her and moved around the other side pouring Charlotte a tea and grabbing myself a beer from the fridge. Emma smiled watching me take care of her friend and with a nod I knew that I had Emma's respect and approval to take care of her friend.
We ended uptalking for hours as Emma and I slowly brought out little snacks for Charlotte to eat as we conversed. Carson and I telling stories about us being stupid kids and getting in trouble and Emma and Charlotte giggling about their competitiveness and drive to beat one another in everything. It was surreal to be standing here with our mates. A moment that Carson and I had dreamt of since we were young, but I wouldn't change a single thing about our journey if it lead us here to this moment.
