Zane POV
As we silently moved through the kitchen and began fixing our coffee. I looked around at the glamorous kitchen. Dark cherry cabinets made the white granite and stainless steal appliances look even brighter. The massive fridge and freezer combination took up the entire side wall. I always ate a full meal 6-8 times per day. It was how I maintained my muscle mass and the energy to work the hours I did.
I looked at my beautiful baby girls face, her facial expression still looked frightened as we sat down on the plush stools at the counter. I have no idea what I would have done should she have gotten hurt.
“Charlotte... I think you need to go stay with your aunt Lucinda for the summer in California. I haven’t seen a wolf in these parts for many years. Last time the were known to be here many people died from attacks and I don’t want you anywhere near here until we can be sure the area is safe.”
Looking at her slumped shoulders and her avoidance to make eye contact you could see that this had frightened her to her very core. Maybe her mother and I should have told her years ago. The secret that we had been keeping from our daughter was now only going to hurt her more then ever. She had no idea what she was... what we were...
“Dad, it chased me. I-it was all the way across the river bottom and then it was all a sudden right beside me. It chased me all the way back to the house. It didn’t attack me, and then it just stayed at the tree line.” Her eyes were wide as she recounted the event.
I could feel a growl rumble up through my body. I used every bit of control I had to push it back down. I made sure my men kept a tight patrol of our land. There is no excuse for an intruder to be this far into the land with no patrol finding them. I was going to have a very uncomfortable meeting shortly but right now Charlie needed me. There is nothing in this world I wouldn’t do for her. She is my blood and my only heir. I couldn’t stand to see her scared like this.
Her hands were shaking, and I doubted she knew they were. My poor baby was in a complete state of shock. As i grabbed her hand to reassure her I noticed they were ice cold. Maybe I should tell her... get it al over at once, but her mother would be furious. We left to keep her safe. Spun so many lies that we could no longer remember every lie we told her. She would never understand. Or at least I wouldn’t blame her if she never forgave us, her mother would be a force to reckon with if i did this without her, but for now until we could figure out how to tell the truth we would have to continue the lie.
“Charlie... did you hear me?” She was staring at her coffee, deep in thought. “I think you need to go to California to stay with your aunt for the summer, she will take good care of you and a summer in the sun before you go to Stanford in the fall won’t hurt you sweetie.”
“Did people really die last time? Like... wolves actually killed them,” she asked making direct eye contact.
“Ah... yes... six people died from wolf attacks about fifteen years ago. The police worked very hard with other...ah... specialists to bring the attacks to a stop.” I was relieved when she finally let out a long breathe absorbing the information.
Where the hell was her mother... She should be home from the blood bank now. How long did it take to run errands?
Oh God... her mother... she was going to be so upset that this has happened. Katrina was going to kill me for sending her kid away for the last few months we had with her. I felt the blood drain from my face again. Today was going to just be one of those days.
“Wait a second... Emma’s parents died fifteen years ago and no one told her how. Was it the wolves?”
My heart hurt for this beautiful girl in front of me. Her world was about to be turned upside down and she was still thinking about others during all of this. Emma’s parents had been killed by the rogues that came her to attack us fifteen years ago. They were part of our pack. They died trying to help us protect Charlotte. She was born on the pack territory and was two once we realized her gifts. Unfortunately, an omega in the pack told their mate about her abilities and their happened to be an Alfa from a rival pack. This Alfa wanted to raise Charlotte as his own and use her abilities to attack any opposition that got in his way. Human or creature, if they weren’t with him, they were against him. They were never seen again.
Emma’s dad was my Beta at the time. The best fighter the elders had ever seen in the years, but even that wasn’t enough for our pack or 500 to fight against the thousands that attacked us. Our pack was slaughtered. The memory haunts me to this day. As the Alfa I should have stayed and died fighting for my pack but my Beta, Aaron and my Third, Luca had devised an escape plan without me knowing.
While Aaron provided a distraction for the attackers Luca injected me with wolfsbane. A plant extract that renders a wolf completely useless and forces you to turn into your human form until your body filters it out. Completely defenceless and betrayed by my own pack I was dragged on to our private plane and didn’t come to until we had already arrived here on the land, we now call home.
“I’m sorry sweetie, I don’t know anything about how they died. They were tragically taken away, but Luca has raised her as his own since their passing.” That seemed to help her settle. Even though Luca and I were not on speaking terms since the attack he still had a job to do, and he excelled at it. He gave Emma everything she ever needed or wanted even at his own expense.
However, even though we have been trying to protect Charlotte, every lie we have told has been at your expense. It will no longer matter if it was for her protection or not. Lies and lies. We just didn’t want her to live a life in fear, but maybe we should have taught her to protect herself instead. She has Alfa blood in her as well as the blood of her mother prestigious coven. Katrina is a descendent of the oldest witch blood line, and our baby girl is in hiding because she is known as the most powerful creature in the world.
Our elders talked about a prophecy and the same prophecy was found in Katrina’s’ coven. We have been avoiding the truth to keep her from her destiny, but it seems that there is nothing to be done to stop what fate holds for her.
I look at her and I can see she needs some time alone to process what’s happened today. I give her a hug so tight that she will never forget how much I love her. “Run upstairs and pack a bag to go to your aunts Charlie. I will talk with your mom and have her arrange the flight for you. I love you baby girl.”
